*Obama the Unready - FRC.org - Web Log Nov 20, 2009, 4:01 pm
President Obama is said to be taking his time, carefully weighing all alternatives, 'calibrating” our response to the situation in Afghanistan with precision and judgment. The point of all these statements is to reinforce the Obama administration's theme that George W. Bush rushed off pell-mell and did not assess the situation properly before committing U.S. troops. Not since the famed King Ethelred the Unready have we seen such a long, drawn-out, and public process of decision-making. Despite
There is much gnashing of teeth by abortion supporters over the inclusion of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment in the Speaker Nancy Pelosi health care bill ' H.R. 3962. Bart Stupak, Michigan Democrat, and Joe Pitts, Pennsylvania Republican, succeeded in amending H.R. 3962 so that no government funds can be used to pay for abortion. Claims that Stupak-Pitts is out of line with current law or that it is unconstitutional are simply false. The Stupak-Pitts amendment ('Stupak-Pitts”) combines two prin
Today is the 146th anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. I was reminded of this date yesterday when I took some visitors from Australia and New Zealand to visit the Lincoln Cottage in Northwest Washington. President Lincoln spent almost a quarter of his four-year term at this rural getaway. He and his family spent summers and early fall days there in 1862, 1863, and 1864. It was at this refuge—a retirement home for old and disabled soldiers–that he drafted the Emancipation Proclam

In a heated exchange with the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, Attorney General Eric Holder stood by his decision to jeopardize–not only New York City, but 200 years of American tradition—by launching the trial of the century against 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and five other terrorists in the Big Apple. Holder insists that New York is the best 'venue to obtain justice,” but as Senators on both sides of the aisle argued, prosecuting terrorists minutes from the g
*Obama's Abasement - FRC.org - Web Log Nov 19, 2009, 11:48 am
Once again, the Internet is alive with pictures of the President of the United States bowing low before some foreign monarch. Barack Obama first showed the world his behind as he bowed before the odious King of Saudi Arabia at a London summit last winter. That was bad. The king of Saudi Arabia rules a desert fiefdom where those who convert to Christianity are beheaded while the regime looks the other way. Bibles are banned. Jews are not allowed even to enter the country. That bow was atrocious.

If so, please send it to Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.). She is the latest example of a Member of Congress who should not be there. I am sure the Founders never envisioned elected Representatives who would not have a grasp of the most basic concepts of the Constitution. It may be time for an amendment requiring members of Congress to take a basic proficiency test on at least the Bill of Rights. The President himself argues that he and his allies in Congress are not “in some way sneaking in funding for abortions, but on the other hand that we’re not restricting women’s insurance choices.” This is sort of like saying that when eating a four-scoop sundae, the dessert really isn’t about ice cream. According to ABC News, President Obama is now “calling for a summit meeting of experts to find ways to jump-start job creation. And a jump-start is needed.” This comes on the heels of a new report that the federal deficit “hit a record for October as the new budget year began where the old one ended: with the government awash in red ink,” as the Department of the Treasury warned that “the deficit for October totaled $176.4 billion, even higher than the $150 billion
Wednesday's headline in The Hill led with the caption 'Abortion-rights groups threaten not to fund Rodriquez and Teague.” Apparently NARAL and Planned Parenthood are ticked because Congressman Ciro Rodriguez (D-Texas) and Congressman Harry Teague (D-N.M.) voted in support of the Stupak Amendment which removed abortion funding from the health care bill (1). Very few news organizations are reporting on the divide that is developing within the Democratic Party. Many Congressional Democrats,

But it is not unusual that the Congress has required individuals to do things, like sign up for the draft and do many other things too, which I don't think are explicitly contained (in the Constitution).”
So the emails the terrorist Hasan sent to a jihadist imam in Yemen were not deemed threatening? What if they were in code? *No Obama in Berlin - FRC.org - Web Log Nov 9, 2009, 4:49 pm
President Obama is not in Berlin today. Very proper, I think. He's not there to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. He's not going to say anything about how freedom triumphed over totalitarianism in 1989 and how 'we” won a great victory. President Obama is showing a decent respect for the opinion of mankind. Or, at least, he's not showing the kind of shamelessness that Bill Clinton regularly shows. George Stephanopoulos often said that Bill Clinton has no sense
Ronald Reagan brought two things to Washington that were very much out of fashion, I enjoy telling student interns at Family Research Council: brown suits and freedom for a hundred million people in Eastern Europe. Democrats are going out of their way to argue that the Stupak-Pitts amendment prohibiting federal funding of abortion is an effort to enact new restrictions on abortion itself. The enzyme telomerase rebuilds these sequences at the ends of the chromosomes, thereby maintaining a cell’s viability. Cel
Does the Director of the National Institutes of Health not know the difference between embryonic and adult stem cells? Or is he just biased? In an interview with the New England Journal of Medicine, Francis Collins talks about the number of “stem cell” clinical trials: Steinbrook: What will the results of stem-cell research mean for human health? Collins: My crystal ball is just as cloudy as everyone else's. However, the developments in understanding stem cells and how they could po
Speaking of clinical trials, in case you missed it the FDA has put another hold on Geron’s proposed experiments to put embryonic stem cells into human spinal cord injury patients. Geron’s human experiment was approved back in January 2009, and they were supposed to start experiments with patients in July. As an aside, one excuse offered by Geron as to why the trial had not yet started was car airbags… apparently the airbags in accidents are keeping patients from getting seve
Wednesday, September 30th, FRC was very pleased to announce the release of a groundbreaking report, 'A Passion to Serve, A Vision for Life: Pregnancy Resource Center Service Report 2009” which coincides with the 40-year anniversary of the pregnancy resource center movement ('PRC”) in the United States. Today's economic news was not good. This from Reuters via Yahoo! Finance: U.S. employers cut a deeper-than-expected 263,000 jobs in September, lifting the unemployment rate to 9.8 percent, according to a government report on Friday that fueled fears the weak labor market could undermine economic recovery. The consensus was for a loss of 180,000 jobs. Furthermore, highly respected banking analyst, Meredith Whitney, wrote in yesterday's Wall Street Journal that credit available for small busine
Wednesday night, the Empire State Building in Manhattan shone red and yellow as a tribute to the sixtieth anniversary of the Communist takeover of China. When lit, the Empire State is a lovely sight. Yet last night's display cast a rather ugly glow. Why? Because given the nation it is honoring, we must ask the sponsors of this celebration which highlights of China's history during those sixty years they especially want to honor. Might it be the murder of Christian missionaries in the lat
The state of morality on the American college campus seems to be in perpetual decline, and I have shuddered to think about what it will be like in a dozen years when my own daughters will be getting ready for college. But from a liberal college in a liberal state comes a small ray of hope. Tufts University has revised its 'guest policy” for dorm visitors for the new school year to include the following new rule: 'You may not engage in sexual activity while your roommate is present in the
Still stinging from a strong debate among ELCA pastors this summer, The Rev. Dr. Ralph W. He begins: The major news coming from the 2009 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's biennial Churchwide Assembly has been the change in policy related to persons in gay and lesbian relationships. The policy change allows congregations to determine for themselves if they wish to of

In the news recently was the FDA approval of a clinical trial for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis; Lou Gehrig’s disease) by the company NeuralStem. Doctors in Southampton, England have successfully used adult stem cells to repair hip bones, allowing patients to avoid hip replacement surgery. After removing dead tissue in the hip, the cavity is filled with bits of ground up bone and the patient’s own adult stem cells. So far six patients have had the treatment with only one failure, doctors said. Carl Millard, who had the adult stem cell procedure, said he could walk normally and without any pain. Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute used a mouse model of cystinosis, a genetic disease that can afflict children as young as six months old, causes deteriorating kidney function and inevitable kidney failure. Stephanie Cherqui, the scientist who developed the mouse model, said that adult bone marrow stem cell therapy is particularly well suit

I've just received news that the most respected editor of the Papers of George Washington–a collection to goes to fifty volumes–has died. My alma mater, University of Virginia, announced the passing of William Wright Abbott III. He was 87. Mr. Abbott (all the profesors at U.Va. were called 'mister,” in deference to Mr. Jefferson's republican manners) was revered around the Grounds. The official announcement said: Abbot was hired as the James Madison Professor of History at U.Va.
The Charleston Gazette this morning reports of Dr. Susan Wicklund's visit to Charleston yesterday for a book signing and speaking engagement with the Woman's Club of Charleston. Wickland, a long-time abortionist from Montana, offers praise for her profession. The Gazette article, unsurprisingly, is glowing in its coverage. But it is the actual words of Dr. Wicklund that left me stammering for words. Consider, for instance, her description about what abortion is: 'Abortion is about life: qu
We have been told endlessly that we have witnessed an 'historic” day at the UN this week. Indeed, we did. It was a day that many of us could be proud of. A nation's leader stood at the podium before the General Assembly and addressed representatives of 192 nations who are member-states of the United Nations. Here is part of what that leader said: The United Nations was founded after the carnage of World War II and the horrors of the Holocaust. It was charged with preventing the recurrence of s

I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding. Not all of California is one banana short of a bunch. One area of sanity is in Kern County where the elected clerk and auditor-controller, Ann Barnett, has decided instead of being complicit in the destruction of marriage that Kern County would stop performing marriages. The reactions to her actions expose quite a bit of the intolerance Christians can expect more and more of as the "same-sex" marriage movement goes beyond California. On Thursday, she appeared stung by critics who have labeled
Remember Gonzales v. Carhart? That's the Supreme Court decision from last year that upheld the Congressional ban on partial birth abortion. Justice Kennedy wrote the opinion, and lawyers tied themselves up in knots trying to interpret it. Most agree it was a narrow victory for the pro-life cause, but it was a victory. That can be seen in last Friday's decision by the 8th Circuit to allow a South Dakota abortion law to go into effect, a case in which FRC filed a friend of the court brief.
The Boston Globe is reporting that Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), a Massachusetts biotechnology company, is running low on cash and may have to shut down or at least make severe cutbacks. ACT has been in the news in the past (usually first with their own press releases) for claims such as the first cloned human embryo, animal-human hybrid clone, creating organs by gestating clones, and for a technique that supposedly might produce embryonic stem cells without harming embryos. They finally got one right!  After two of the worst, most politically motivated decisions in history, the California Supreme Court finally issued a rational decision. The Court threw out a challenge to this fall's ballot initiative seeking to enshrine traditional marriage in the California constitution.  The challenge was the latest attempt by social leftists to prevent the people of California from deciding an absolutely fundamental issue - the definition of marriage.  Of course,

While the Canadians have taken the legal route to claiming that a child can have three "parents," British scientists are taking it a step further. Researchers at Newcastle University have now created an embryo (a.k.a. human being) that contains the DNA from three separate parents: They experimented on 10 severely abnormal embryos left over from traditional fertility treatment. Within hours of their creation, the nucleus, containing DNA from the mother and father, was removed from the embryo,
On Thursday, I testified at a legislative forum on behalf of the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA). My testimony follows below: Chairman and members of the committee, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Michael New. I am an Assistant P
Congress has ever made. Reps. Pence (R-IN), Hensarling (R-TX) Schmidt (R-OH) and Bachmann (R-MN) are making a compelling case against taxpayer funding of abortion. I had not made the connection that one of the "mega-abortion centers" going into affluent neighborhoods was in Rep. Bachmann's district. Rep. Schmidt naturally is talking about the cases in Ohio of statutory rape. Both cases went unreported by the abortuary.
Japanese and German groups are reporting that they have produced functioning heart cells from mouse induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Both reports note that the iPS-derived cardiac cells were comparable to those obtained from mouse embryonic stem cells.

The Special Order has begun. Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) opened with an eloquence and forcefulness that I'm sure has Henry Hyde smiling. Once his speech is posted I'll post it here. It is heavy with facts and figures on Planned Parenthood, the largest purveyor of abortion in the world. Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) followed (confession time here - Rep. A commonsense way to reduce abortion would be for Congress to pass legislation requiring parental notification. The problem is that many abortion clinics lure young girls from their home states that have parental notice laws to states where they can get abortions without their parents knowing. Often the man who gets a young girl pregnant takes her to the clinic. To counter this type of human trafficking, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) reintroduced the Child Interstate Notification Act (H.R. 106

The political debates produce a lot heat and hype regarding stem cells but when it actually comes to helping patients, adult stem cells continue to provide success and real promise. Given the results as well as a view toward the bottom line, it's not surprising that Big Pharma is investing in adult stem cells. Pfizer recently invested $3 million in a new San Diego company, EyeCyte, which will develop adult stem cell treatments for eye diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopat

In a recent letter to the Desert Sun the Rev. Kevin A. He argues that we can find evidence of how much better marriage is today than it was before in the story of Isaac an
