*Missing George W. Bush - Standing on Truth Nov 13, 2009, 4:43 pm
Despite the unpopularity of my blog title today, I’ll say it anyway. I miss President George W. Bush. Watching him on television yesterday delivering his speech at Southern Methodist University brought a warm familiarity–a comfort–to my heart; like a dependable, much loved blankey would for an infant. And as I see from fellow bloggers today, maybe my sentiments are not that unpopular anymore. Maybe the tide is turning. Maybe the public is beginning to see just how rad
*In Whom Do We Place Our Hope? - Standing on Truth Nov 10, 2009, 10:18 pm
You know that game you used to play when you were kids. . .a friend would say, “Name the first thing that pops in your head when I say ____.” Well, I wonder if we played that game with the world, and then read them the following verse, who would pop in their heads:
“In his name the nations will put their hope” (Matthew 12:21).
Are you thinking about President Obama right now? Maybe you know that this verse is referring to Jesus, the real Messiah, not our president, bu
*Alcoholism and My Friend, Robert - Standing on Truth Nov 6, 2009, 4:59 pm
This weekend marks a special birthday to me. It would have been the birthday of a long-time friend of mine. He died nearly two years ago of an enlarged heart. He was only 40 years old.
About 14 years ago, I was an aspiring writer whose passion was poetry. I had ventured downtown to an ecclectic coffee shop to observe people, be inspired, and write poem after poem into the late night. I did this often. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who came here for good coffee and inspiratio
*Let Go by Sheila Walsh - Standing on Truth Nov 3, 2009, 10:30 am
I should probably recuse myself from writing this book review solely based on how fond I am of Sheila Walsh. I have attended a few Women of Faith conferences where she speaks and she strikes me as the real deal–genuine, refreshingly honest and personal, and incredibly likeable. But all bias aside, her newest book, Let Go, is a great addition to any library. In this book, she addresses those things that hinder us in our relationship with God; those things that separate us from the unf
The Sniffling Season - Standing on Truth Oct 30, 2009, 1:56 pm
Here we are again, in the middle of what I’m calling The Sniffling Season. . .everyone coughing, sniffling, and sneezing all around us. . .as we pray for immunity from it all. What can we do to protect our bodies and our family from it all?
This product has remained in our home for about 5 years now and it has helped us avoid many sniffles along the way. As I’ve been researching lately for some of the best supplements and herbs to build the immune system and fight off viruses, I
*No Better Feeling Than Serving Together - Standing on Truth Oct 27, 2009, 7:54 pm
When I woke up this morning, I had the thought that maybe I was thrown out of a second story window overnight. My husband and I (with about 8 others from our Life Group) had just spent 14 hours remodeling the family room of a disabled couple. Now we were incredibly sore.
But after I started to adjust to the fatigue and pain, I had the best feeling in the world–that feeling of having spent a whole day thinking of someone other than myself, of helping a couple that was stuck in a rut of disa
Be Healthy: An Easy Reference Guide - Standing on Truth Oct 23, 2009, 12:05 pm
I feel a bit like I’ve stumbled upon a treasure chest full of gold! I stumbled upon it by way of www.NaturalNews.com, an excellent health website I’ve been visiting lately. It is called the Honest Food Guide, created by a holistic nutritionist named Mike Adams, a.k.a. “The Health Ranger.” This is an excellent resource to study, keep in your kitchen, or take to the grocery store with you. It is a handy reference guide as to what food choices can lead to disease
*More Swine Flu Vaccine News - Standing on Truth Oct 21, 2009, 2:46 pm
Although I didn’t intend to write another blog about the swine flu vaccine since I covered it a couple of weeks ago (link here), I came across some interesting news today that I wanted to share. This is from Barbara Loe Fisher, president of the National Vaccine Information Center, who says this:
“If you or your child are injured from getting a flu swine flu shot, you are on your own. Because Congress shielded the vaccine manufacturers and any person giving swine flu shots from laws
*Rush Limbaugh: Legitimate Consequences or Smear Campaign? - Standing on Truth Oct 20, 2009, 6:09 pm
Rush Limbaugh is no favorite among the Left. No one is denying that. But how far will the Left go in order to silence their opposition? Is that what is happening here in the case of Rush Limbaugh and the NFL? OR, is this exactly what those involved in this decision say it is–a legitimate consequence for Rush’s alleged racist statements?
Here are some facts and thoughts about it. . .then you can decide.
To begin with, just who are those that booted him out of the bidding pr
*Star Parker Does it Again! - Standing on Truth Oct 19, 2009, 4:33 pm
Ok, it’s official. One of my new favorite commentators is Star Parker, and she delivers another excellent, eye-opening article. In an article entitled, “Outrage over ACORN, but not abortion,” she wrote these observations and truths:
“The ACORN scandal shows that if Congress wants to act, it can. Within weeks of Fox airing videos of a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute being advised by ACORN ‘community organizers’ on how to evade taxes and set up
Balloon Boy Hoopla a Hoax? - Standing on Truth Oct 16, 2009, 2:54 pm
When news that 6-year-old Falcon Heene had been found safe and sound after yesterday’s heart-stopping news-making adventure, I was so relieved and thanked the Lord. I’m sure that many mothers and fathers who were watching could tell you that it was as if they were experiencing this horror with the Heene parents.
What was thought to be a several hours-long flight that could have ended very tragically was simple a vacant, runaway balloon with a scared little boy hiding in an attic.

Ah, the Comparison Game. As moms, we are awfully good at it. . .we cower under it or rise up with it. . .we allow it to inflate our egos or deflate our spirits. . .and it can even come between good friends.
Who doesn’t like the feeling of measuring up to the standards that we set for ourselves, or if reasonable, the ones others set for us? But when the standards go beyond what God has planned for us or enabled us to do, or the comparison game gets out of control, we find ourselves be
*Obama's Nobel Peace Prize - Standing on Truth Oct 10, 2009, 10:59 pm
So President Obama is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Too fast? On grounds that are not convincing? Embarrassment?
Author and scholar Judith Miller says, “The decision to award Barack Obama the Nobel Prize rewards him for not being George W. Bush and for his aspirations rather than his achievements, his promise rather than his performance.” I could not agree more.
I’m curious though. Will this affect his decision about whether to honor General McCrystal’s request
*Health Care Reform. . .It's Getting Really Serious - Standing on Truth Oct 9, 2009, 11:35 am
Ok, I’m getting really scared here. Even with 50% of the nation disapproving of the President’s health care proposals, there is talk that this health care reform including a public option could pass as early as next week, with or without Republican support. I’m just not quite sure enough people really and truly understand just how drastically this free country could (and will) change with this simple bill.

*Jesus - Standing on Truth Oct 7, 2009, 1:03 pm
JESUS LOVES YOU!
No IFs, ANDs, or BUTs about it!
There was just a nudging in my spirit today that someone needed to hear that.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with loving-kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16)

*Motherhood VI: The Power of Prayer - Standing on Truth Oct 5, 2009, 10:42 pm
I truly believe that there is very little that we can do for our kids that will be better than praying for them. I come across great articles all the time about this very thing. We have prayers written out in either corner of our house that remind us to lift up our son to the Lord in prayer. But sometimes I find myself so distracted by the “preparing” that I fail to remember the “doing”. Does that make sense? That is why I am so thankful to Mark Harris.

*To Have or Not to Have. . .the Swine Flu Vaccine - Standing on Truth Oct 1, 2009, 5:14 pm
So much is being made lately about the swine flu that is circulating around, closing schools, and unfortunately in a few cases, taking lives. It is difficult, for me at least, to find the right balance between the extreme hysteria and the reality of the risks. As a mom especially, anything involving my child’s health and life can, unfortunately, set every emotion into high gear and therefore throw some rational and logical thinking out the window. And watching the news only exacerbat
*My Son's New Life in Christ - Standing on Truth Sep 30, 2009, 12:06 pm
We walked into church on Sunday, hearts full of joy. And there it was. The white rose symbolizing our son’s new life in Christ. . .the church, celebrating together a 4 year old’s admission that he was a boy who sinned and needed Jesus’ death on a cross some 2,000 years ago to erase those sins. What began with a question, “How do I go to heaven?” ended with a humble and sincere invitation, “Jesus, come into my heart and help me.”

*Crying Wolf - Standing on Truth Sep 23, 2009, 11:10 am
My heart is heavy with the way our country is dividing lately. The issue of race is far too serious with which to be playing politics, and yet it is interjected into the cultural climate on a weekly basis. I am not speaking of those events that clearly and without question include racial biases and prejudices. I agree that those exist and are deplorable. What I am disheartened by is the increase in those who “cry foul” when none exists, inevitably creating a perceived victim
*I Created a Bucket List - Standing on Truth Sep 21, 2009, 3:15 pm
The Urban Dictionary defines “bucket list” as “a list of things to do before you die; comes from the term ‘kicked the bucket’.” A movie by the same name came out in 2007 starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. I never saw it, but the idea has intrigued me.
I just made my bucket list.
My list is still being formed, but to date, I have 65 things that I’d like to do before I die. . .Among them:
Take a cross-country road trip and journal it all
