On May 5th, Americans United for Life presented House Republican Leader John A. Boehner with its 2010 Henry J. Hyde Defender of Life Award. Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO of Americans United for Life, recognized Leader Boehner both for his extraordinary leadership in the fight to prevent taxpayer-funded abortion at the federal level and for his unheralded pro-life work in his home state of Ohio.
"To get this award tonight named after Rep. Henry Hyde is really important. I want to thank Americans United for Life for all of the work that you're doing," Boehner told the audience."Not just all of the work that I saw you doing during the health care battle over the last six months but for all of the work that I've seen over the years working with Members to develop the pro-life riders that we have in the appropriations process and the work that is being done today in state legislatures around the country."
Leader Boehner was joined at this ceremony by Congressional colleagues including Representatives Trent Franks (R-AZ), Chris Smith (R-NJ), and Dan Lipinski (D-IL). The event was also attended by pro-life leaders and activists, noted journalists, and leading bloggers.
The Henry J. Hyde Defender of Life Award was established to honor the legacy of Representative Henry J. Hyde (1924-2007). Hyde, former Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, was a renowned pro-life leader and author of the original Hyde Amendment. Representative Hyde also served as Honorary Chairman at Americans United for Life. Each year, this prestigious award is presented to an elected official who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the cause of Life.
