Yesterday a friend and I were discussing the fact that President Obama allowed the public funding of abortions in Washington DC, and what our response should be.
My friend suggested that instead of an all out refusal to pay taxes, and instead of individuals doing this on their own - which the IRS would salivate over - he suggested a massive tax protest held over a certain period of time.
If the signers of the Manhattan Declaration are serious about refusing to pay taxes over the public funding of abortion via health care legislation, let me say there is no longer a need - if there were a reason to begin with - to await passage.
If one one million people withheld their taxes for one month it would send a strong message - one that the IRS certainly could not deal with, and one that would send a shot across the bow of Congress and the White house.
And if the Government isn't moved, then the taxes will continued to be withheld until public funding is rescinded.
Sounds extreme? No, what is extreme is an oppressive government encouraging the killing of our innocent neighbors - and paying for their execution.
I like this idea of a targeted tax protest - I just wonder if the signers of the Manhattan Declaration would adopt it.
Anybody for a tax protest during the month of April?
And for those who who are confused over the issue of paying taxes to Caesar, consider the closing line of the declaration - "We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar's. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God's."

Taxpayers have been funding abortions for years through private insurance, which is free from taxes. Heck, even Focus on the Family pays insurance money to an insurance company (Principal) that has plans that cover abortion. Even the GOP's coverage, up until recently, directly covered abortion. A little late in the game to get really upset about this.
I think if health care coverage passes, we'll see an overall decrease in abortion rates in this country.
Disagree with Ex-GOP Voter. Private plans free from taxes are not an example of our tax money covering abortion, It's not like we all have a tax that we pay to cover tax-exempt organization's taxes. I doubt that the plan Focus on the Family chose actually covers abortion, even if other plan offered by that company do. Not sure what your point is. That private companies cover abortion? We can't do much about that except fight for abortion to be recognized as unconstitutional.
And that's a nice opinion, that abortions will decrease. Don't know what you are basing it on. But even if it is true, public money funding abortion is a HUGE step in the abortion fight. How can you declare something unconstitutional that is widely funded by every American's tax dollars. Laws matter and taxes matter. The result of Roe v Wade, besides legal access to abortion, was a public assurance of the morality of abortion. If it's legal, how can it be wrong? Can't you see how the next sep of publicly-funded abortions in the States (they are already funded by the US in Latin America) reinforces public opinion of the right to choice over the right to life?
