On Saturday, the Senate voted 60 to 39 to start the debate on Harry Reid's massive and very costly 2,074-page healthcare monstrosity. When Congress returns from Thanksgiving break the senators will begin debate on the bill (H.R. 3590)
In order to buy a needed vote in the Washington version of "pay to play" politics, Senator Reid inserted a $300 million earmark in his healthcare bill to buy the vote of Senator Mary Landrieu. When the media reported that Landrieu pulled off a "100 million dollar" lottery for Louisiana, Landrieu denied the report but defended her actions by saying, "I am not going to be defensive about asking for help in this situation. It is not a $100 million fix, it is a nearly $300 million fix."
In exchange for the $300 million "Christmas gift," Landrieu will host a $4,800 per person fundraiser for Senator Harry Reid at the home of David Voelker, chairman of the Louisiana Recovery Authority and supporter of Obama's presidential campaign.
If the buy-off doesn't make your stomach churn enough, the Senate bill itself will really sicken you. It contains both government-funded abortion and a public option plan. ...
