July 26, 2009A Brooklyn nurse claims she was forced to choose between her religious convictions and her job when Mount Sinai Hospital ordered her to assist in a late-term abortion against her will.

The hospital even exaggerated the patient's condition and claimed the woman could die if the nurse, a devout Catholic, did not follow orders, the nurse alleges in a lawsuit.
"It felt like a horror film unfolding," said Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo, 35, who claims she has had gruesome nightmares and hasn't been able to sleep since the May 24 incident.
The married mother of a year-old baby was 30 minutes into her early-morning shift when she realized she had been assigned to an abortion. She begged her supervisor to find a replacement nurse for the procedure. The hospital had a six-hour window to find a fill-in, the
suit says.Bosses told the weeping Cenzon-DeCarlo the patient was 22 weeks into her pregnancy and had preeclampsia, a condition marked by high blood pressure that can lead to seizures or death if left untreated.
The supervisor "claimed that the mother could die if [Cenzon-DeCarlo] did not assist in the abortion."
But the nurse, the niece of a Filipino bishop, contends that the patient's life was not in danger. She argued that the patient was not even on magnesium therapy, a common treatment for preeclampsia, and did not have problems indicating an emergency.
Her pleas were rejected, and instead she was threatened with career-ending charges of insubordination and patient abandonment, according to the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court.

Moreover, whenever the loudest voices call out for "freedom of choice," etc., the very last thing they're talking about is "freedom of choice" for anyone in the medical profession who chooses to exercise his or her right to avoid anything to do with an abortion.
It all comes down to another word: power.
The last thing pro-abortion people really want is choice, especially educated choices!
Mrs. DeCarlo's case represents only one of many turns of the screws this administration's been trying to pull since January. But it may have stripped the bolt. You simply cannot break laws just because you don't like them or you have a good hunch they'll be wiped out by new health care "reform" measures legislated by Congress. Abortion related Concientious Objector protections have not been eliminated, and Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC will learn this the hard and every expensive lesson soon.
We only need to read about the inexorably fast-moving steps taken by abortion's proponents since Barack Obama took office in January, beginning with the ham-handedness of the administration's first attempts to rescind the Bush protections for anti-abortion conscientious objectors within the medical profession. Obama and HHS Sec. Sebelius (sort of) backed off and are coming out for such protections, all the while knowing full well their blood-bucket carriers on Capitol Hill, Sen. Barbara Milkulski among the worst, are doing everything they can to rip whatever existing protections out of any nationalized health care "reforms."
Obama and Sebelius might think they can play Pilate by washing their hands on this sneak end-run legislative ploy; they might want to also consider another famous role when it comes to villains attempting to wash the blood of their misdeeds in getting others to kill or enable killing on their behalf: Lady MacBeth.
The political party of the "peace protestors" during the Vietnam War, who extolled the "concientious objectors" et al, has all of a sudden forgotten that conscientious objector protections are not the exclusive property of one ideological group.
Where have the stalwarts for freedom of conscience been concerning Mrs. DeCarlo's nightmarish plight? Did they run off to Sweden or Canada?
Forced to help murder a baby! This is an outrage! I will be very interested to see the outcome of this lawsuit.

Hm, that's tough. What would you do? Myself, I would be upset, and wouldn't want to be in trouble for insubordination or patient abandonment; BUT, I still would not do it. I would not let anyone "force" me to do it; I would rather quit my job.
