George Tiller was Murdered

George Tiller, a Wichita doctor who was one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions, was shot to death on Sunday as he attended church, city officials in Wichita said. - New York Times

Attorney Dan Monnat says Tiller was shot as he served as an usher during Sunday morning services at Reformation Lutheran Church. Monnat said Tiller's wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time of the shooting.

Police said they are looking for white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. The vehicle is registered to an owner in Merriam, which is in the Kansas City area. (Wichita Eagle)

Update (2pm):  Tiller Shooting Suspect in Custody  -

Eyewitness News has confirmed the suspect in the shooting of Dr. George Tiller is in custody in the Kansas City area. Wichita police say the man was arrested near Gardner, KS at around 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

Wichita Police are hosting a news conference on the shooting at 4:00 pm today.

Update (4pm): Johnson County sheriff's spokesman Tom Erickson identified the detained man as Scott Roeder.

I hope you will join me in denouncing this violent act of lawless vigilantism which stands in direct opposition to the mission and vision of all pro-life organizations. My condolences to the victims of this act and my sincere desire that God's grace would be upon them.

La Shawn Barber - Tiller made the case for infanticide by showing graphic photos of unborn babies with abnormalities. He admits on tape to having aborted babies a day before the mother's due date.

Pro-Life Unity: The mainstream media will be calling on the Pro-Life community to get statements on George Tiller's murder. Specifically, what they will be looking for are emotions of glee or satisfaction now that he is dead. They will find neither from most groups and individuals.

Bound4Life: We are deeply grieved and shocked by this morning's news that abortionist George Tiller was murdered in Wichita, KS. Bound4LIFE believes in and encourages the peaceful, legal methods of public assembly for the purpose of prayer. We denounce the violent act committed today against Mr. Tiller and his family. We believe that all human life is unique and precious to God.

Christian Defense Coalition:

Rev. Patrick Mahoney, national pro-life leader, former national spokesperson for Operation Rescue, had just completed leading two weeks of prayer vigils in Wichita during the trial of Dr. Tiller.

Rev. Patrick Mahoney condemns the shooting of Dr. George Tiller.

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life:

"I am saddened to hear of the killing of George Tiller this morning. At this point, we do not know the motives of this act, or who is behind it, whether an angry post- abortive man or woman, or a misguided activist, or an enemy within the abortion industry, or a political enemy frustrated with the way Tiller has escaped prosecution. We should not jump to conclusions or rush to judgment.

"But whatever the motives, we at Priests for Life continue to insist on a culture in which violence is never seen as the solution to any problem. Every life has to be protected, without regard to their age or views or actions."

Sidenote: although no suspect has been apprehended, commenters are already suggesting that those who condemned child killing and infanticide are to blame for Tiller's murder.  Unfortunately, I can imagine any number of ways this singular criminal act could be exploited by pro-abortion politicians to attack freedom speech and silence pro-lifers.

touching denounciation. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

He was an amazing doctor, and an amazing man.

You disappoint me.

PROLIFERS: Killing people isn't how to solve problems.

PROCHOICERS: If somebody's existence troubles you, it's okay to kill them.

Which philosophy endorses murder? Hm?

leroy, you wouldn't happen to be leroy CARHART, would you? The quack who killed Christin Gilbert with your bungling incompetence at Tiller's facility?

Obviously, from the comments of the "pro life community" you chose to reproduce here, all of this is just crocodile tears. The radical pro-lifers have been gunning for Tiller for literally decades. Now, I sincerely hope that the rest of you get tarred with the brush of the radicals and are called what you deserve to be called--supporters of terrorism against women.

Ms. Holmes: I wanted to say to you, God bless you for your courage. By the way, web site is down now currently as of 5/31/2009 12:47:26 PM. Not surprising due to the pious spineless ways in which these groups conduct themselves.

It is so shameful, un-American and cowardly of this organization to purport itself as a ‘Christian’ pro-life group, while hiding behind the cross. This group and the one you’ve just posted to in my mind are one and the same as the Taliban; using fear, guns, and murder to further their fundamental misguided illegal agendas.

Steve B

What has this nation come to, when a person can just kill another person in broad daylight. Well, at least the perpetrator in this case will not be able to kill another baby ever again.

OMG, what a tragedy (wink wink)

Violence is never the answer (champagne glasses clinking)

We pray for Dr. Tiller in the name and love of Jesus Christ (even though we all know he's burning in hell)

We condemn this act of vigilantism (quick, who's next on the list?)

I'm an aborted fetus, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

The world is upside down - it expresses rage over waterboarding 3 individuals whose primary desire was to murder thousands of innocent, defenseless, civilians, and who were believed to have knowledge of such plans; and expresses disdain for those who, at a minimum, would like to eliminate late term abortions, partial birth abortions and, oh yes, the President's favorite -- aborting "botched" aborted babies. May God helps us.

Nice the ProChoicers have their martyr.

This is the worst thing for the ProLife cause since Roe v Wade.

There will now be MORE ABORTIONS because of this act of TERRORISM.

Perhaps that was the plan??

I concur. Sometimes I wonder if the entire world has gone insane. It would behoove all of us to stop and think for a second just who Jesus would have tortured and murdered: brown people, Muslims, and others who disagree with us religiously come to mind.

Because Dr. Tiller wasn't an MD specializing in complicated pregnancies: making the difficult decision to offer potentially life saving procedures to women in late stage pregnancies who suffer from complications that put the life of both mother and fetus at risk.

No, he was a PRO-ABORTIONIST. Right? He went out and convinced ppl to get abortions. He did drive-by abortions on unsuspecting mothers.

And now he's paid for his dedication to his medical profession and his otherwise option-less patients with his life.

Anti-abortionists, anti-evolutionists, and the whole group of anti-science and anti-medical theocrats need to put their money where their mouths are and stop getting vaccinations, antibiotics, chemotherapy, interferon, etc.

Stay the hell away from us and we (and our godless medical degrees and "science" learnings) will be more than happy to stay the hell away from you.

If you want to invoke Jesus Christ in celebration of a murder that's on you.....but don't you dare call yourself a Christian while you're doing that.

This act of terrorism will only lead to more abortions. Celebrate that you moron.

I have followed the "career" of late term abortion provider Tiller for months. His "slippery slope" of abortion providing proved to be none the less of murder of babies viable outside of their mothers womb. His method of killing involved killing just inside the mothers cervix, otherwise his procedures would be defined as murder. The needless killing of a human life VIABLE OUTSIDE is indeed murder any which way you want to slice it.

Dr. Tiller, I seriously doubt your in Heaven since you violated the laws in God over and over again.

Anti-medical theocrats? Jesus, and torture and murder? You lost me, and I don't get your points. However, as another example of how the world is turned upside down: why is same-sex marriage an issue decided at each state level, whereas abortion was mandated nationwide but unelected, life-tenured individuals? why is the reliance upon science so important when evaluating the environment, and openly dismissed when it comes to assessing the LIFE of a child still within its mother? In other words, where is the intellectual honesty in our debate? Or, does that not matter provided it suits a particular view/agenda? Simply asking.....any thoughts out there?

Lisa Doerr,

So you believe in salvation by works, I see.

I find the fact that Dr. Tiller was in church appauling. What the heck church condowns its members to be late term abortion providers? Didnt the Paster ever sit him down and say, You know George. Its really not in Gods will to kill babies late term like you do. Please.

One last word... What goes around, comes around. I do not advocate murder, but the irony of this is just too amazing.

I'm NOT a Christian. And pretty thankful that I'm not, especially when I see:
1) incidents like these
2) the reactions from the most fervent of xtians
3) the inability of any devout person to pick up on sarcasm and satire

Tiller spent the past 35 years giving Satan a foothold in Wichita, in that church, and in his life. And Satan cashed in all his chips today and walks off triumphant. Just read the comments of the abortion advocates -- they're DELIGHTED that this man was gunned down. They'd been losing ground in the polls, and then Tiller gets shot. If they pray, this is an answered prayer.

The response has been pretty much fourfold:

1. Some prolifers saying, "Well, he reaped what he sowed. I can't mourn the death of a mass murderer."

2. Most prolifers saying, "Sh*t! We'd been praying for this guy's conversion and now THIS happens!"

3. Most prochoicers saying, "What a bleak day for women!" (To which I'd add, "Only women who hate babies and rejoice when they're killed.)

4. A lot of prochoicers exchanging high fives and thinking "This is JUST WHAT WE NEEDED! The money will be pouring in! You can't buy this sort of publicity!" While they weep crocodile tears in public.

David, if Tiller's patients were all so dreadfully sick, why did he instruct them to avoid hospitals and high-risk ob/gyns and instead travel to Wichita to spend three days in the LaQuinta attended only by their family or friends?

David, with all due respect, you are confusing the illegal, murderous act of the individual who killed this doctor, with Christians. And, let's say for discussion purposes (because we DON'T know) this individual openly professes to be a Christian ---- so what!! That person does not represent what the Christian faith is. I'm sure if we were having a beer together you would admit this, right? And I am sure you have valid reasons to, seemingly, be so anti-Christian. Whatever those reasons, I would encourage you to perform some independent, objective research on the life of Jesus Christ; who he is, what he did when on this earth, and what he proclaimed to be. Don't fall into the time-worn trap of confusing man's shortcomings with what the Christian faith, and who Jesus Christ, is.

You guys really are the American Taliban. I see comments like: Violence is never the answer (champagne glasses clinking)

I see it so often where the child HAS to be born. Even if it will face a life of poverty and parents that knew it was better to CHOOSE an abortion. Then I read rightwingers screaming about families need financial help, food stamps, etc...

You all seem to love the fetus and hate the child.

My god, you folks truly are American terrorists. You celebrate terrorzing women into not having an abortion. You celebrate the killing of a man practicing a legal profession.

Truly the anti-choice foes are terrorists.

With all sincerity, I respect and thank your civilized tone. But that would be the exception, not the norm in my experience. Believe me when I say that I have studied religion and xtianity to a very high degree. I avidly enjoy debate, learning, and intellectual rigor.

Putting aside claims of divinity and holiness, which I'm sure you and I will never agree on, what Jesus actually preaches bears practically no resemblance to the main talking points and issues of modern xtianity.

And while I do know from experience that many xtians are not rabid extremists, the claim that Dr. Tiller's murderer is not representative of your community is invalid because his actions, in fact, have been made possible by many of your compatriots. The atmosphere of condemnation, self righteousness, anti-science/anti-medical research, and the rampant vilification of researchers, activists, and doctors with whom you disagree created the circumstances that allow people to commit acts of arson, terrorism, and personal violence without fear.

When you are constantly berated with the notion that everyone who is on the opposite side of an extremely complicated issue is evil incarnate; when you have pundits and religious leaders with absolutely no medical training making claims and assertions; when you have black and white ideas of heaven and hell, this act is almost destined. At the heart of the matter, a wife has lost a husband, 5 children have lost their father, and a community has lost a doctor. Yet I read comments such as "he deserves worse" and "may he rot in hell" and "one down, how many left to go?" from the far religious right.

That's why I come from the perspective I do.

I would just like to say, that I am not dancing around my living room with joy for the fact that this man was murdered. What I can say is that after I did many hours of my own research of this mans method of doing late term abortions saddened my heart immensely. If you really want to know the gory details of it all, then I recommend you do. Or, you may also want to Google Abortion Survivors of Tillers little "mistakes".

I can guarantee that clinic won't be closed. There are folks making plans right now to make sure that does not happen.

Dr. Tiller is now a martyr.
The ProLife movement's fate is sealed with the fate of this murdering terrorist.

And more babies will die because of it.
Why don't you break out the champagne to that.

You need to take those comments for what they are: comments from individuals with warped minds. You seem too intelligent to use these examples to shape and form your views -- for every whacko comment you read, there are tens, if not hundreds, of Christians who are quietly praying today for his wife and five children --- they don't need blogs, they simply have a relationship with Christ. There are no "talking points" of the Christian faith; there may be with "modern" Christian faith, whatever that is, in which case I would submit that you are listening to the wrong sources. What do you have to lose - you say you studied religion and Christianity. That strikes me as an intellectual exercise - I noticed you did not state you studied the life, actions, and claims of Jesus Christ. There is a difference. If Jesus was a cult leader, then that was the first and last which did not seek the death of his followers; if he was simply a madman, then that was the first and last which exhibited no ego; if he was, and is, Lord, what do you do with that? Anyway, thanks for the dialogue but, again, dismiss the warped views and comments for what they are.

The more I think about it the more I think that the people who predict that Tiller's abortuary will remain open are right. Carhart and whatshername were doing most of the dirty work anyway, with Tiller just skimming the profits. Most of what he did for the business was schmooze and grease palms. And the National Abortion Federation no doubt has their best people on it -- how to keep those powerful political connections alive.

NAF is probably also going over his records to see if there's a sympathetic patient they can talk into stepping forward as a representative of Tiller's patients. Odds are against it. Most of the abortions are for social reasons dressed up as "mental health." But there might be a woman whose baby has something like anencephaly or one of the nastier trisomies. You can bet that if there is such a patient her name will be a household word within the week. She'll be "the face of late term abortion in America", as if she really is representative.

And given how plain the hand of Satan is showing in all this, I'm betting that there's not just a mother with a lethally diagnosed baby, but she's a teenage rape victim as well. No way was the timing on this a fluke. Satan had a reason for picking this of all days. There's somebody he has in mind to bring forward.

The anti choice movement is a terrorist network similar to Al Qaeda.

I'm not a christian, but you don't have to be a christian to have morals and to be pro-life. I say, GOOD RIDDANCE. Some people might say that I have a double-standard because I'm both against abortion, but I'm happy this man was finally killed. Just because I'm pro-life doesn't mean that I'm against the death penalty. If you take a life intentionally you are guilty of MURDER, and MURDER should all be punishable by DEATH. I can only imagine the number of babies this man killed.

What an irony that he died in a place of worship. Maybe his god was finally fed up with his hypocricy? I've no sympathy for a man who would dare kill defenseless children in their mothers' wombs. I hear that if the children survived the abortion he'd murder them anyway by sucking their brains out or strangling them to death? This man SICKENS me. GOOD RIDDANCE. This man got what he deserved. So may it be to all murderers of unborn children. Death to them ALL.

To whining "pro-women's rights" people: What about the rights of the child? Or does the child have no rights as long as a doctor keeps its head stuffed in your v*gina? You want something to do with your body? GET A HYSTERECTOMY and STOP KILLING CHILDREN. I'm GLAD this man is dead. Guilty of murder. Justice was done. All such men should be tried this way. Maybe there is a god after all.

Think of Tiller's death as a very late-term abortion. There shouldn't be a problem with that. Is there?

No, I'm wrong, he was killed incorrectly. His head should have been stuffed in a woman's vagina first. Oh well... better luck next time...

Reading these comments has only served to affirm the reasons why I no longer identify with those who call themselves Christians. Your Christianity bears no resemblance to the lessons Christ taught, and your celebration of Dr. Tiller's murder illustrates what true Christians have known all along: You have misrepresented yourselves. You are not pro-life; you are anti-choice. Your radical rhetoric has prompted the taking of one life (Dr. Tiller,) while almost guaranteeing the death of another (his murderer.) But who cares about the deaths of two living, breathing human beings when there are organisms to be saved?

Hey tennmom, the baby u killed as well as the one's tiller and carhart killed were living human beings some of them born alive like u and tiller...
think before u blog!

No, I am not sad that this evil monster was killed. I view it as one less baby murdered today at his clinic. I don't understand what kind of church welcomes a man like that? Is the word of God really being preached there, or is simply a social club for misfits?

The world is just fine. The problem is you people fail to realize that condemning torture AND condemning vigilantism is the SAME THING. This is the United States of America, we have a long history of priding ourselves on ideals that have made us stronger and possibly better than countries with lesser ideals. When we turn against our ideals, we erode our own social fabric.

That being said, this doctor should not have been killed. This doctor was despicable and should not have been able to hide behind the banner of reproductive rights. The problems are that RvW is a ridiculous ruling that is to broad ranging and shouldn't even exist at the federal level (abortion is a state issue not a national one).

While I support abortion before the baby is viable to survive on its own, I believe that once the baby is able to survive on its own it stops being a fetus subject to abortion and starts being a baby that is MURDERED not aborted when the life is ended.

Murdering a late term baby because of a social undesirability is GENOCIDE (so people that do it are no better than Hitler), and murdering a late term baby because the life of the mother might be in jeopardy doesn't say much for the mother in question. As a mother, you should be willing to risk your life EVERY DAY for your child.

Rolf, you are so beyond the right here. Abortion is not an answer to prevent poverty in the life of the child. There are adoption lists filled with viable parents that want children that can support them. Abortion is only a viable option when the baby has a problem with it that might affect its life long situation. I support abortion until the baby is viable to live outside of the womb on its own. Past that point it is simply murder.

Do you have to be a Christian to believe that it is wrong to murder 60,000 innocent babies?
