VATICAN: BISHOPS MUST REFUSE COMMUNION TO PRO-ABORTION POLITICIANS

Washington, DC (4 February 2009) - Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued a statement today in response to an interview in which Archbishop Raymond Burke, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's highest court, stated,

There's not a question that a Catholic who publicly, and after admonition, supports pro-abortion legislation is not to receive Holy Communion and is not to be given Holy Communion ... This is a law of the universal Church and it should be applied.

About the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Burke commented,

I think this argument [that this matter should be decided by the USCCB] too is being used by people who don't want to confront the issue, this whole "wait 'til the Conference decides"...well the Conference has been discussing this since at least 2004. And nothing happens... Individual bishops and priests simply have to do their duty. They have to confront politicians, Catholic politicians, who are sinning gravely and publicly in this regard. And that's their duty.

Statement by Judie Brown:

"It has long been American Life League's contention that canon law applies within the Church in the same way that state, federal or local law applies to the citizens of the United States. At American Life League, our focus has been on Canon 915, which is written for the express purpose of protecting the body and blood of Christ from sacrilege.

We have repeatedly called on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to enforce this law, abide by this law and deny the Holy Eucharist to any public figure who claims to be Catholic while at the same time supporting abortion. Abortion is an intrinsically evil act, and no Catholic who supports that act in any way should be permitted to receive Christ.

We are deeply grateful for the definitive words of Archbishop Raymond Burke. Archbishop Burke was also asked about Catholic bishops who claim that denying Holy Communion to a pro-abortion politician "makes the Communion rail a [political] battleground." He simply and succinctly responded, "Nonsense." We extend our sincere gratitude to Archbishop Burke for once again making it clear why every single Catholic bishop and priest not only should enforce Canon 915, but is obliged to do so for the sake of souls and for the sake of protecting Christ in the Holy Eucharist from sacrilege."

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death. I agree that church discipline is appropriate but am wondering your view of it. Specifically, is refusing communion a strictly punitive measure?

They should not only be denied communion, they should all also be excommunicated.

The bishops should have excommunicated "Catholic" politicians 40 years ago when they first started supporting the killing of unborn children. The response should have been swift for any and all politticans who announced they were selling out their Christian values and supporting this evil destruction of human life. Had this occurred, these politicians would never have been able to get away with supporting unlimited abortion crime.

The fact that the Catholic Church and other churches have not acted against "Christian" politicians who believe in destroying human beings has likely cost millions of our children their lives. It is way late for the bishops to start taking a strong moral stand, but they have to do it and now is the best time to start.

All "Catholic" politicians should be contacted by representatives of the Catholic Church and a demand should be made that they immediately cease supporting violence against unborn children. If they refuse to repudiate publicly their support for criminal prenatal homicide, they should be excommunicated forthwith and not allowed to be a part of the Church community until they change.

I know this is tough but this violence has killed 50 MILLION human beings. It is the worst destruction of human life in history. The number one job of political leaders in any society is to protect human life and rights. If they are unwilling to do this they have no business being in power. If they continue to support and even commit crimes against human life they should not be supported by the religious community.

I agree, I think Catholic churches as well Christian churches should deny communion and/or sacrament to those who support this evil, -as well as excommunicate those that continue to support and advance this holocaust that has slaughtered 50 million innocent human beings.

The more you learn about abortion and the damage it causes to women and men (not only the innocent unborn victim), the more you realize what a true evil this is.

Churches need to take a stand and truly support what is right and true instead of turning a blind eye to this and saying and doing nothing. Because in doing so, they are supporting those who continue to advance this evil lie of abortion.

I applaud the Vatican for taking this strong stand against abortion.

Why stop with the politicians? Excommunicate ALL pro-choice American Catholics! Then, we can do something about getting rid of the few American Catholics who would remain.

Just one gas chamber might be enough!

Strange as this may seem coming from a pro-choicer, I agree - the catholic church should refuse communion to pro-choice polticians, because according to my knowledge of their doctrine, that's the right thing for them to do by their own rules.

Also, It'd lead to the catholic church becoming very unpopular with a lot of powerful people - espicially here in europe, and even more so if they were sufficiently emboldened they started punishing other politicians who defied church policy. I approve of this outcome.

Can there be a massive letter writting/emailing going to The Pope via his Secretary? Pleading for strong actions with our Bishops who refuse to comply and enforcing Canon 915? Maybe, threatening to send them to Sibera, or Orissa, or China, or Iraq, will help them have a backbone to defend the Eucharist and our Faith and stand up for Life.

We need St. Nicolas's intercession more than ever. He is the Patron of Children and shocked the assembly of Bishops in Nicea when he slapped Arius in the face. Then helped write with St. Athansius the Nicean Creed. He was a mover and shaker then, may he come to our aid in this our time of great need.

[Nota bene: When sending mail to the Holy Father, do not place the word 'Italy' on the envelope. The Vatican is an independent nation and Italy's mail system routinely misroutes mail addressed to the nation of Vaticano. When the Vatican sends mail back to you, you'll notice it is commonly postmarked from somewhere within the U.S. That is due to Italy's mail being so unreliable. The Vatican uses its own Vatican couriers routinely traveling to the U.S., on a daily basis, to carry US mail overseas and upon arrival in the U.S., the mail is then dropped off at a local U.S. post office.]

Have we become too secularized and too politicized to act as true followers of Christ? Over the last five decades, we have lost our grip on the fundamentals of our faith. Statistics show that the USCCB has been ineffective in promulgating Church Doctrine in recent decades, and they've been particularly ineffective on the foundational issue of abortion. This negative reality, and 36 years of abortion on demand, have led me to conclude that the responsibility, urgency for action, and the power to reverse the culture of death in today’s confused society, rests in the hands of our bishops.

We’ve read comments like, “the Church is not confused. Statements of the Pope, various Vatican officials, committees and officials of the USCCB, and the entire body of US bishops, all point to abortion as the foundational human rights issue of our day.” If the Church is not confused then why are so many millions of Catholics, and other interested parties, so confused, and for so long a period?

The magnitude, duration, and the infamy of high-profile “Catholics” openly supporting abortion over the years is why millions of Catholics were influenced into believing that to be pro-choice was morally acceptable, they didn’t believe there was a sufficient reason to withhold their votes from pro-choice candidates.

The USCCB had in its hands, the most powerful potential weapon for bringing the abortion slaughter to a halt. Catholics were the swing vote (a sleeping giant) who would determine the next president of the United States! This sleeping giant did not get the prodding, and specific direction, it needed from the bishops.

Our bishops must have the will to officially announce, clearly, emphatically, and unambiguously, that Catholics who claim to be pro-choice, and who stay unrepentant, i.e., to firmly hold the pro-choice position, has stepped outside the body of the Church, and should no longer call themselves Catholic!

Most Catholics still don't know that they can't be pro-choice because the Bishops won't say it. In fact, the high profile "Catholic" politicians are showing us that they can climb to the top of the political ladder by being pro-choice, like "Catholic" Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House. High level lies demand a high level challenge from a united Catholic Church; this has not happened!

Pope John Paul's "be not afraid" message was a direct appeal to our American Bishops to be more proactive on abortion. He was hoping that they would "act" heroically; he knew that the world would be watching the American Catholic Church, and the American media.

As far back as October 7, 1979 at the Capitol Mall in Washington, D.C., Pope John Paul II said, "If a person's right to life is violated at the moment in which he (or she) is first conceived in the mother's womb, an indirect blow is struck also at the whole of the moral order, which serves to ensure the inviolable goods of man. Among those goods, life occupies the first place."

The new "Catholic Catechism for Adults" says it clearly, Christ chose his apostles, and the apostles chose men to be bishops to succeed them, and handed on to them what they received from Jesus' teaching and example, and what they learned from the Holy Spirit. The pope and bishops in union with him are successors of the Apostles and inherit the responsibility of authoritative teaching. In Luke Chapter 8, Christ said, “my mother and my brothers are those who hear my word and act on it.”

Abortion is a lance in the side of Christ. It is our explicit duty to be active in the spiritual works of mercy; that includes everyone who endures the effects of original sin.
Writers for Life

Giving a little thought to the matter, I think that only one figure in the catholic church holds both the power and respect to give the order that pro-choice politicians are to be refused communion, and have it obeyed by every single priest. The order must be given by no less than the Pope himself.

It's no good to have almost all the church obey - that just means pro-choice politicians have to change their church to one that does provide communion.

I suggest a letter-writing campaign.

Being denied communion IS being excommunicated.

Again the problem is clarity. Specific terms are necessary to break through the confusion. Informed persons know that Catholics who support abortion are excommunicated, ipso facto. They do it to themselves. But that's not what you generally read or hear. So, the average person does not know it. As I've said before, most Catholics still don't know that they can't be pro-choice because the Bishops won't say it. When they do, we'll see a major change of attitude and in the debate.

Egli Ha,
What a terrible thing to say. "It might take just one gas chamber" just because someone believe differently than you you want them dead? You might just as well be an abortionist. Pro choice people are not all evil, I know several strong catholics that are middle of the road that respect life but dont want it to be a law.

"I know several strong catholics that are middle of the road that respect life but dont want it to be a law."

Yeah sure. And I know several strong vegetarians who take their steaks rare.

It's an oxymoron. Strong Catholics do not believe it should be legal to dismember, disembowel and decapitate innocent human beings.

By the way, Jane, the real Jane Doe is named Norma McCorvey. Long ago she revealed the lies that the Roe case was built on and she renounced the brutal actions taken in her name. Today she is pro-life.
