The Red Envelope

Dear Friends:

This afternoon a friend was praying about a number of things, and her mind began to wander. She was deeply distressed at the symbolic actions that President Obama took as he began his presidency. Namely, that he signed executive orders releasing funds to pay for abortions, permission to fund human stem cell research, and federal funding for contraception. She has been involved in the pro-life movement for nearly 20 years, and it pained her heart and so many of us to see a man and a political party committed to the shedding of innocent blood. This man, and this party lead our country, but they do not represent me or the 54% of Americans who believe that abortion is wrong and should no longer be legal.

As she was praying, she believed that God gave her an interesting idea. Out in the garage she had a box of red envelopes. Like the powerful image of the red LIFE tape, an empty red envelope will send a message to Barack Obama that there is moral outrage in this country over this issue. It will be quiet, but clear.

Here is what we all could do:

Get a red envelope. (You can buy them at Kinkos, or at party supply stores.)

On the front, address it to:

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington , D.C. 20500

On the back, write the following message.

This envelope represents one child who died in abortion. It is empty because that life was unable to offer anything to the world.

Responsibility begins with conception.

Put it in the mail, and send it. Then forward this email to every one of your friends who you think would send one too. I wish we could send 50 million red envelopes, one for every child who died before having a a chance to live. Maybe it will change the heart of the president.

While you are correct that Obama signed an executive order to undo the Mexico City Policy, you are incorrect in reporting that he signed excutive orders relating to stem cell research and contraceptives. While I admire what you are doing, please, please take the time to check the facts before sending out information.

That is a great idea! After he signed the Executive Order without media attention. I sent an E-mail to him. That has been almost 3 weeks now and I have not received a message back. I told him that I was disappointed in his actions and hoped that this was not an indication of what his presidency is going to be about. My daughter works for EWTN and will be in St. Louis this weekend. I will pass this message to her and see if they can get the message out to their listeners.

More information on the actual source of this campaign may be found at http://www.thinkingchristian.net/2009/02/red-envelopes-for-life-where-it-began/ . Thank you for taking part!

I will link to this on my blog. I will send envelopes and will email friends to do the same.

Interesting idea. I am amending your verse to say "because that life was ended before it could offer...". I am also adding a quote from President Obama, spoken at the National Prayer breakfast: "There is no God who condones taking the life of an innocent human being. This much we know."

gs-apparently you missed the signing of both executive orders Obama signed to allow Federal money to pay for live stem cell research and to also pay for abortions in countries all over the world.

You are the one whose mistaken!

I'm still waiting for gs to comment back. C'mon.
Sorry, gs, that rhetoric of yours just sounds too familiar and makes me kinda nauseous :)

I think we should all send big life size greeting cards to white house front lawn... I hope it's ok if mine is bigger than the norm. I found this site:
http://www.lifesizegreetings.com/ My card will represent an unborn person who needed a bit more room because he was a third trimester "medical emergency" victim.

i think that we could put better use to our collective energy by having a PINK Envelope Project.

get a PINK envelope, and in the envelope should be a pink notecard with a single word like "HOPE," or "COURAGE" or "STRENGTH." and send it in memory to someone who has lost her battle with breast cancer, or better yet, send it to someone who is a SURVIVOR of any cancer.

We all have issues. Your issue while valid, is not the subject for this stream. Pink envelopes have their place. Just not here.

I pray that God will touch the heart of Pres. Obama and convict him mightly of the murder of innocent children, so that he will make it unlawful with severe punishment for the doctors who enjoy this business. And to make sure that the women get to see a sonagram of that child before the decision is final.

I totally agree with Carol. But I'm not shocked at what President Obama is doing. In fact, he is doing exactly what he said he would do if elected.

I follow politics quite closely and knew about his history in politics.

I'm disappointed in the American people who voted for him.

Thanks for listening,
Rhonda

While I've always been against abortion, and I AM doing this, I was never a fan of Obama. He's turning our country into a socialist country!

Check out Family Research Council at www.frc.org where you can keep updated about Pres. Obama's agenda on abortion and other important issues.

Um since having a so-called 'safe & legal' abortion can put a woman at higher risk of developing breast cancer, your comment that we should divert our attention away from pro-life efforts towards breast cancer prevention efforts doesn't even make sense.

We're doing both.

I will be sending out 190 red envelopes this coming Tuesday, March 31st. As I wrote these envelopes, I continualy prayed: Come Holy Spirit ~ surround President Obama and convict him of his need for Jesus . . . that his heart would be softened, he’d surrender his life to Jesus Christ, and he would bring an end to abortion. In the name of Jesus! Amen!

After the envelopes are mailed, what next? Here are some thoughts . . .

With every red envelope a prayer has been said
and now we’re asking the Spirit of God
to speak to the heart of every person ahead
who’ll be handling and passing them on

through the mail to their final destination ~
the office of the President of the United States.
We’ve been obedient to follow God’s direction,
now we’re praying Barack Obama does the same.

Obedience to the mandates of a holy, mighty God
is something that this man must recognize
is necessary for God’s protection to remain upon this land;
if he ignores God, he’ll be accountable for those who die . . .

because God makes the delicate inner parts,
every tiny creation He forms.
Knitting it together in woman’s womb –
a child God intends to be born.

Present in utter seclusion,
He presides as the child quickly grows.
The color of its eyes, each day of its life
are things the Lord already knows.

He said, “Whoever welcomes a child,
welcomes and cares for Me.
Don’t prevent them, let them come –
let the children come to Me.”

But there are those who would laugh in God’s face,
destroying the child not yet born.
“The choice is all ours”, they loudly proclaim,
and they kill what belongs to the Lord . . .

They kill what belongs to the Lord.

I am a social worker for the state. I think it is good to support something that you believe in. I work with children that have been sexually molested by their father and become pregnant with their father’s child. I have dealt with girls who have been impregnated by their father and try to give themselves abortion due to they do not want to have a child that reminds them everyday of the bad things their father did to them or explain to their child that they are a product of their father molesting them. I ask you to make a change and ask people to please start adopting children who were not aborted that are in the system or become a foster parent before we go and ask the president to stop abortions. Now I am not saying that abortions are right but I do not want women out their putting themselves in harm or endangering themselves by trying to give themselves abortions. I pray to god that people will also make a stand and start adopting children who were not aborted and are now in state custody. There is no cost and the state pays for the adoption. Or at least become a foster parent to the children who were not aborted. We keep pushing to stop abortions but those same people are not adopting or fostering the children who were not aborted. When you send that red letter to the president, just keep in mind of all the children who were not aborted and are waiting to have a parent adopt them or be a foster parent to them. Just something to keep in mind.

Dear "Foster Parent",

We raised our niece as our own. We had legal custody of her from age 7-18 years old. She is now married and we have 2 grand children from that union. God only knows what would have become of her if we hadn't been there for her.

I believe I have done my part to help society with it's ills. My husband and I have also had a Home Day Care for many years and have helped parents raise their children and allowed them to make a living to support them as well.

Let me ask you something. Do you think all those children in State custody would rather be dead? Is that the solution?

Our society is sick and needs to be healed--not kill our babies. What kind people have we become?

I have more to say, but must go for now.

May God be with us all,
Rhonda

I applaud your work efforts, I really do. That being said:
I don't know what state you work for, but I live in Tennessee. We used to be foster parents here. We can't have children of our own and saw the foster care system as a viable way to adopt and be parents to children who needed parents, love, a safe home, and guidance into a better future. We started our training with the ideal to "adopt only" (which at that time you could do in Tennessee - but no longer). Then we saw how many kids just needed temporary homes and we didn't want to use the system for our own gain. That decision would prove ironic later down the road. We fostered over 14 children in just under a year and half. Never got any calls about children needing to be placed for adoption. We went to perm plan meetings when our fellow foster parents wern't going, because we felt that anything that affected a child living in our home affected us. We joined the foster parent association locally and statewide, we did fund raisers and every single time we were only joined by one or two other foster parents, but we still gave and gave and gave. Many mistakes were made by Tennessee Department of Children's Services involving us -- children were brought into our home knowingly on psychotropic meds (even though we put down in our preferences that we were not able to foster children on psychotropic meds) but we took them anyway, I mean what can you say when a child is tired and already tucked into your bed before the DCS worker pulls out the prescription bag at your dining room table? Some children went without their meds while they were in our care because their case worker could not get the red paper worked out to get the med refill approved. After weeks that child still had not received their -- once again and a different child -- psychotropic medication and got violent in the process. The reason we wern't getting any adoption placement calls? --- DCS had inherently put into the REACT system (which matches adoptive homes with children) the wrong age preferences that we had requested. We filled out our REACT information with ages 3-12 years of age, DCS put into the REACT system that we only wanted children 2-3 years old. It's untelling how many calls we might have gotten. At the time we were one of only 2 foster homes in our whole county (a large area county), so I can't help but feel that maybe that mistake was a "convenient" one for DCS if you get my drift. We had to fill out a change request that took over 2 months to correct the problem even though DCS made the mistake.
Then I made a mistake. I contacted a fellow foster parent online and began email correspondence with her. She ended up breaking the confidentiality of the children in her care. The reason I contacted her is not important, as it broke no rules or policies of DCS, but she had posted pictures of her foster children online, and one of those children was a former foster child of ours we had been trying to visit with for over 9 months. That was a breach of confidentiality in and of itself. However she made it very evident in her correspondence concerning her feelings and her actions about a teen that was in her care. She was being abusive to this teen, and I felt no other option but to turn her in. Several people got into trouble, even people I didn't know and over things I didn't know about, still don't know about, and don't want to know about. People got mad, and mostly at me. Even though I was the person who reported this and brought the situation to DCS' attention, our home was closed citing that I also had violated confidentiality and that my purpose had been to gather and share information. I tried to argue and then I tried to appeal to DCS' sense of justice, neither worked. I was told that I'd have to go with another agency if I wanted to foster. Well, we tried. It seems that in Tennessee you have to be approved by DCS to foster for any agency, or to adopt from any agency. So we looked into trying to adopt out of state... that too is a no go, DCS has to approve your home for that as well, and you have to be approved a foster parents, no such thing as "Adopt Only" in this state. Many told us to adopt privately, and I didn't want to do that. You see, adopting a foster child is very important to me. My grandparents adopted me when I was 3 months old. They saved my life in doing so. But I caved in and we looked into adopting privately.... guess what? You can't do that either in this state of Tennessee without becoming involved and being approved by DCS as foster to adopt parents. As long as we are in the system as "closed not in good standing" we can never be parents and our home can never be opened to these children in Tennessee or any other state. We again appealed to DCS. Looking back and pulling out our PATH training that we kept, we realized that we had about 5-10 minutes worth of training in HIPPA and Confidentiality. We weren't trained properly in something that was serious and could close our home. We told DCS that we'd start over, we'd retrain, didn't Tennessee DCS offer some other form of corrective actions besides simply closing a home? Probation, retraining, supervisory period.... ? No, the Tennessee Department of Children's Services has nothing in place to retrain (and in so doing retain --- which is a major problem in this state) foster parents. Biological parents can be given chance upon chance, but not foster parents --- no second chances -- one strike and you are out --- out of not only fostering but adopting by any means in Tennessee.
We own our own home, in fact, while fostering, we built onto the house 2 extra bedrooms, to be able to foster AFTER we adopted (we had only 1 extra bedroom when we began)... so here we sit with 3 empty bedrooms, how great is that? We are retired, and have more than enough time for kids. So why not do something else, like mentor or become a child advocate? Well, in Tennessee, if you have had past issues with DCS (such as a home closed "not in good standing"), you can't mentor, be a court or otherwise child advocate, you can't even be a big sister, big brother.... nice isn't it?
We are left with no alternative but to pack up and move from our home, a home that we've loved in and have loved for years and years now. We can think of nothing else but to move to another state unless we want to be parentless and give up our dream of a bigger family than just us two.

And before anyone out there replies with a "you don't know what you are talking about" or "you are misinformed"... no we are not... we have went to two family/adoption lawyers and have been told what's what.

So you can see how I can talk some offense somewhat to your simple remedy of -hey, adopt these homeless and parentless kids.... don't just tuck your kids in at night and say we've done our part.... it's easy and it's rewarding...
In Tennessee it is not easy, and in not wanting to use the system, Tennessee DCS used us and screwed us. We got a taste of what it was like to have children, and then that was taken away from us because I was expected to be perfect and not allowed to make a mistake and learn from it. It's so ironic because I'd be a better foster parent from what I've learned from this experience.
Before I was a happy person who just wanted to be a mom, not perfect, but not messed up either. Now I'm traumatized and I'm a childless mother. It was better not knowing, it's hell knowing and missing children every single day, when the bus runs, at night when it's time to tuck and read and go to sleep, holidays, birthdays, I remember all "our kids". So you need not be so flip to say give... sometimes the system you give to keeps.

We are in our middle fourties and not getting any younger, the house market is down, and it's untelling when we'll be able to sell our house. Nice Huh?

Dear Vaughn 94,

I'm so sorry to hear what happened to you and your husband and all the dear children that missed out on you parenting them.

I all seems so very unfair, but God says that all things are for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Do you love Him and are you called according to His purpose? If you are, you can know without a doubt, that what happened to you is for the ultimate "good".

From the upper mid-west,
Rhonda Lee
