Washington, D.C. (17 February 2009) -The civil rights movement gained a significant victory today as the North Dakota House of Representatives voted Feb. 17 to recognize the personhood of all human beings.
Led by American Life League Associate group North Dakota Life League, the personhood movement celebrated the passage of The Personhood of Children Act (House Resolution 1572), introduced by State Rep. Dan Ruby, in a 51-41 vote.
"We are very excited about the personhood movement in North Dakota - which has the chance to become the first state to protect the rights of all its citizens from their biological beginning," said Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League.
The Senate vote is expected in the next two to three weeks.
Fifteen other states are currently pursuing personhood legislation.
American Life League was co-founded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death. If every state would proactively fight for personhood legislation, we’d be back on offense; the pro-abortion industry would be terrified because they are used to pro-lifers always being on defense. This is an opportunity for a turnaround in the pro-life fight. It will center the debate on the earliest stage of life where it belongs. Personhood of a preborn has not been established in our minds because human growth and development in the womb was hidden from sight. This mysterious, secreted phenomenon of nature has been vulnerable to lies; for decades the womb phase of life has been camouflaged by a long list of contrived utterances, false imagery, and distortions. But now the false claims of the abortion industry have been irrefutably unmasked by science. The womb-phase is now exposed to the world at large, an open picture show of a tiny person in action. Thanks to 3-D and 4-D fetal ultrasound, our eyes can see the unique drama of nature’s miracle in the womb. The fetus is seen to yawn, cry, swallow, blink and execute intricate moves. Personhood is undeniable! Fetal ultrasound is the achievement of the century because it supports what we have always known to be true by common sense. We can no longer deny reality. Ultrasound makes the womb phase of life clearly visible to the world of science, to legal scholars, and most importantly, to parents. The preborn, regardless of his or her stage of growth and development—zygote, embryo, fetus, or baby—is a person who stands on his or her own human right, dignity, character, essence, and equal in value to the freely born.
