NBC Rejects Pro-Life Super Bowl Ad Educating Viewers on Obama and Abortion
by Steven Ertelt

January 29, 2009
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- NBC is coming under fire from pro-life advocates for rejecting a television commercial a pro-life group hoped to run during the Super Bowl. The ad shows a beautiful picture of an unborn child during an ultrasound and asks what would happen if President Barack Obama had been a victim of abortion.
The commercial, a popular one in recent weeks within the pro-life movement, is sponsored by the pro-life Catholic group Fidelis and its CatholicVote web site.
After several days of negotiations, an NBC representative in Chicago told the group late yesterday that NBC and the NFL are not interested in advertisements involving "political advocacy or issues."
Brian Burch, president of the pro-life group, told LifeNews.com he is upset that NBC officials rejected what he calls a uplifting and positive pro-life ad.
"There is nothing objectionable in this positive, life-affirming advertisement. We show a beautiful ultrasound, something NBC's parent company GE has done for years," Burch said.
"We congratulate Barack Obama on becoming the first African-American President. And we simply ask people to imagine the potential of every human life," he told LifeNews.com.
Burch said NBC told Fidelis that they do not allow political or issue advocacy advertisements.
"But that's not what they told PETA," he said about the network's recent decision to reject an ad from the animal rights group. "There's no doubt that PETA is an advocacy group. NBC rejected PETA's ad for another reason altogether."
According to an email posted on the PETA web site, Victoria Morgan, Vice President of Advertising Standards for Universal, said, "The PETA spot submitted to Advertising Standards depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards."
Morgan also talked about edits that need to be made" in order for the PETA spot to run during the Super Bowl.
Burch responded to that rejection further by saying, "NBC claims it doesn't allow advocacy ads, but that's not true. They were willing to air an ad by PETA if they would simply tone down the sexual suggestiveness. Our ad is far less provocative, and hardly controversial by comparison."
"The purpose of our new ad is to spread a message of hope about the potential of every human life, including the life of Barack Obama," Burch told LifeNews.com. "We are now looking at alternative venues to run the ad over the next several weeks."
The ad aired on BET in Chicago on Inauguration Day and it has become an Internet sensation with over 700,000 views in seven days. The CatholicVote ad was in the top 10 "most viewed" category on YouTube on Inauguration Day last week.
The ad says: "This child's future is a broken home. He will be abandoned by his father. His single mother will struggle to raise him. Despite the hardships he will endure...this child...will become...the 1st African-American President."
The television spot, the first of several ads in new campaign launched by CatholicVote.org, concludes with the tag line, "Life: Imagine the Potential."
The CatholicVote.org web site is a project of the Fidelis Center for Law and Policy.
ACTION: Send your complaints about the rejection of the ad to Victoria Morgan, Vice President, Advertising Standards, NBC Universal, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, 1825 E. New York, NY 10112. Call (212) 664-4267 or fax (212) 664-6366 or email victoria.morgan@nbc.com

NBC rejects pro-life Super Bowl ad
Ironic - in light of my post yesterday on Common Sense Media's campaign to clean up NFL ads and the family-unfriendly ads we can expect during the SuperBowl:

WOW! So tell me, when did it become "advocacy" to run an advertisement on TV that celebrated life? Oh, yes. I forgot. Barack Obama and the Democrats are now in power in this country. The advertisement should have been pro-abortion. I'm sure that would have passed the NBC smell test. What a sick and twisted country we are quickly becoming!
I wrote the following note to Anheuser Busch, makers of Budweiser, one of the biggest advertising buyers during the Superbowl:
NBC has declined to accept the video from CatholicVote.org as a Superbowl advertisement. It is my intention to make note of all Superbowl advertising sponsors and stop purchasing their products if this video is refused. It is also my intention to communicate this to people on my blog, hoping that others spread the word and imitate.
Anheuser Busch has always had the most (and most amusing) commercials during the Superbowl. I'm sorry this will be for naught this year. I'm sure I will enjoy them, but I will stop purchasing your product.
I suggest you contact NBC and ask them to make other arrangements.
Very truly yours,
Rosalind xxxxxxxxxxx
The page from which you can send an email to the company is here.
This is the first time I have visited this blog, but it will not be the last. I was surprised to discover that this ad was not shown, because it is certainly not controversial!
Thank you for posting this.
NBC is a private company and can do what it pleases with any ad. They did not allow a PETA ad to air also.
I see nothing wrong in NBC's decision. Its exactly the same as if I told the NEA not to enter my home.
Liberals routinely use the very same situation that B.O. was born in as an excuse to kill a harmless little human being. NBC is pro-abortion. Pro-abortionists don't want real live human beings revealing that the pro-abortion message is a selfish one that kills good people.
You want a cure for breast cancer? Maybe the scientist that would have made a breakthrough discovery was chopped up by his mother.
You want a female president? Maybe she was shredded by a vacuum in her mother's womb.
You want a new Rev. King? Maybe a white guy dismembered him before he was born.
You want the next Nelson Mandela? Maybe the money Obama sends to Africa will pay for him to be cut to pieces.
NBC and other pro-abortionists don't want you to think like that.
We should boycott the Superbowl and NBC if they do not accept people's freedom of speech.
why to reject such a brilliant commercial, the thruth hurts I guess, even the most radical pro choice can't say anything wrong about this, we are going to boicot NBC starting with the Superbowl, I'm not watching neither my Catholics Brothers you'll be hurt more en the near future

I'm not saying I'm pro-abortion or anti-abortion, but surely you can see what an inane argument this is?
You want another Hitler? Maybe he was 'chopped-up' in his mother's womb. You want another Stalin, Pol Pot, etc, etc. An unborn child has potential either way and assuming the positive is just silly.
"We should boycott the Superbowl and NBC if they do not accept people's freedom of speech."
Freedom of speech is meant to be from government censorship, not to force private companies to air commercials they don't want to.
"You want the next Nelson Mandela? Maybe the money Obama sends to Africa will pay for him to be cut to pieces."
Or maybe it will just be used to give them condoms and prevent AIDS rather than trying to stuff a pathetically outdated religious doctrine against safe sex down the throats of desperate, under-educated people. Well, I guess you just wouldn't be Catholics if you didn't continue *that* particular thousand year old tradition. I mean, getting the under-educated and gullible to believe in utter garbage is just what you *do*.
What is our country coming to? To not allow opposing views of the trendy legislation is that is the "darling" of the media strkes me as leaning toward socialism. We are abandoning God, our very principles. This country is so ridiculously divided.
I think of the thousands of people who died on 9/11/01 and I yearn for the praying, focused country that existed on 9/12/01. Must we suffer another calamity to pull us away from our divided God-less society?
Replying to Cameron Aldous:
The reversal of the Mexico Policy DOES mean there will be more unborn children cut to pieces in the womb, or half-in-half-out, and if Obama has his way, this will be the case here and all over the world. It's a fact. Look it up.
And before you equate "giving them condoms" with "preventing AIDS", perhaps you better stop Catholic-bashing for a moment and study up a bit on what condoms really do and don't do to prevent AIDS or other STDs.
A study published in 2005 by Johns Hopkins and Columbia scientists which I reported on here found that the rate of HIV infection didn’t decline and in the case of both the overall HIV infection rates and the young adult rates, those each increased by four-tenths of a point, or 31% and 36% respectively, with increased condom usage. (You have to really read the details, as I did, to reach this analysis. I welcome you to go do that for yourself)
So although there were fewer people in the study by its conclusion (because they had died of AIDS), the rates of contraction of HIV had in fact risen substantially for the overall population and for YAs and that coincided with an increase in condom use!
Using more condoms SHOULD HAVE REVERSED the infection rate and the number of cases of HIV, but it didn't.
Those researchers essentially concluded that "it's the condoms and dying-from-AIDS that are keeping the rate from going up" but clearly there is no way they can even report that with a straight face--and to an international conference of experts on AIDS no less--when the overall and YA infection rates went up 31% and 36% despite the use of condoms.
Anything that increases HIV rates by 31 and 36% is clearly "going up."
It's also rather telling that that same study concluded that the greater availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) to combat HIV wasn't necessarily a great help to a population:
"ART availability may result in behavioral disinhibition (more incidences of sex), increased risk behavior (more risky sex), and higher HIV incidence."
Before that, in February 2004, The Centers for Disease Control (another "objective" source) said that abstinence is the best way to prevent the transmission of some STDs. Condoms were not nearly as effective as abstinence. “The surest way to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including HPV [which is the primary cause of over 99% of cervical cancers which kill 5,000 American women yearly] is to refrain from genital contact,” the CDC said. HPV also is associated with oral, vaginal, penile, anal, and vulvar cancer.
“Research conducted in the United States by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory revealed that the HIV virus is 60 times smaller than a syphilis bacterium and 450 times smaller than a human sperm. Analyzing test results conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control which tested leakage rates of latex condoms, doctors discovered a 78% HIV-leakage rate. As one U.S. surgeon put it, "The HIV virus can go through a condom like a bullet through a tennis net.”
A microscopic hole or tear in a condom, and one can easily become HIV-infected.
Can YOU see a microscopic hole or tear in a condom without a microscope? I can't.
Don’t want to take a man’s website link as reliable? How about this one? “Researchers at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) observed HIV-sized particles leaking through more than 33 % of latex condoms tested under powerful electron microscopes. The HIV-1 virus is 0.1 micron (4 millionths of an inch) in diameter, which is three times smaller than the herpes virus, 60 times smaller than the syphilis spirochete and 50 to 450 times smaller than sperm.”
33%, as a conservative estimate (rather than 78%, in the article before it). That means that at least one out of every three times someone uses a condom with someone they don’t know or who hasn’t been tested for HIV, they risk AIDS. And in the first study, three out of every four times.
Once again, OLD news to me and all those who do a little bit of unbiased, objective, non-abortion-industry-fed homework, which of course doesn't include most pro-"choice" folks and most media/newspeople.
But NOT old news to folks like you, Cameron, who will probably try to deny and dismiss all these scientific experts and their findings that have been out there for a few years for all to read...
Funny how when we GIVE prochoice folks established, proven, objective, scientific sources and facts, instead of biased, prolife-leaning sources, we STILL will be treated with contempt and derision! I suppose Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and the CDC are all just more of that ol' "utter garbage."
Cameron, NOW who exactly is "trying to stuff a pathetically outdated IRreligious doctrine favoring the falsehood of 'safe sex' down WHOSE throat?" That would be you, trying to stuff falsehoods down OUR throats.
And who exactly are YOU calling "under-educated"??
Cameron, there's more, if you want to know it:
The "well-loved-liberal" columnist and editor of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution Cynthia Tucker wrote, in September 2004: "In Western Europe, sexually active adults (and adolescents) are much more likely to use contraceptives than Americans are."
Tucker also raved about what Planned Parenthood's Allan Guttmacher Institute calls the "'pragmatic European approach to teen-aged sexual activity' that does not pretend adolescents are not sexual beings".
Well, every prochoice person in the land who can lift and read a newspaper or turn on a computer knows Cynthia Tucker as one of the mouthiest and most premier of champions of abortion and free sex and condoms and all things abortifacient.
She HAS to know what SHE's talking about, right? After all, simply EVERYONE believes what she writes, right? (Even while she never cites any sources, never mind objective, nonabortionbiased ones, and no one challenges her to do so, 'cept of course, me)
That same year, SEVEN MONTHS BEFORE TUCKER WROTE THAT, Associated Press and CBS had news stories on Feb. 23, 2004, reporting that “[t]he virus that causes AIDS is spreading again in Western Europe and is rampaging through Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where it infected 250,000 people last year, a United Nations health official said Monday. Eastern Europe and Central Asia are experiencing the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in the world, said Peter Piot, the executive director of the U.N. AIDS organization. In 1998, Piot noted, there were only 30,000 people known to be infected with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. That figure has since risen to 1.5 million…Western European AIDS death rates fell to 3,500 last year from more than 20,000 in 1996. But Western Europe registered 30,000 to 40,000 new infections last year…”
So much for that wonderful "pragmatic European approach to teen-aged sexual activity" and "using more contraceptives than Americans".
I know that, to prove this isn't just dismissable coincidence, there would have to be studies done and vetted and published. Perhaps there have been. I just don't have the time to go spelunking for them.
Maybe you do. Feel free. Just do your research on BOTH sides of the issue, like I do, or it doesn't wash.
And consider that no one WANTS this result to be discovered, so if they do find it to be the case, that this isn't a coincidence, that there is some causality or relationship, they won't talk about it or God forbid, publish a news article about it, oh, no.
How about the December 2003 public health conference in Washington DC, where licensed medical doctors cited evidence of an epidemic of STDs among the nation’s teenagers, and CITED "SAFE-SEX" PROGRAMS AND CONDOM-DISTRIBUTION AS CONTRIBUTING FACTORS OF THE PROBLEM. Dr. David Hager gave these statistics: within the U.S. each year, chlamydia cases increase by 4 million, pelvic inflammatory disease by 1.2 million, gonorrhea by 2 million, genital herpes by 1 million and human papilloma virus (HPV) by 5.5 million. And that was four years ago. The rates have probably increased since then.
Remember this: in 1967 (when there was virtually no sex education), 1 out of 32 sexually active people contacted sexually transmitted diseases. In 1983, 1 out of 18 sexually active people contacted STDs. In 1996, 1 out of 4 sexually active people contacted STDs. Those numbers come straight from the CDC.
Back in 2004 when I first looked up all these numbers, the American Social Health Association reported that 3.8 million of these and other STDs are contracted by U.S. teens: almost 45% of all teens and young adults are infected with at least one STD by their mid-twenties.
NOW, five years later, they say that fully half get infected: "One in two sexually active persons will contact an STD/STI by age 25."
Hello?? That's an 11% INCREASE in the past 5 years alone! From 45% to 50%.
And this happens after all that safe-sex education we've been giving our kids over the past 5 years???
Yet note how carefully they couch their support for condoms on that website: saying that condoms are good enough in some cases "when the infected area or site of potential exposure is covered and protected" (they don't say that the infected area isn't always covered by a condom!)
Even that site indicates that abstinence is better for avoiding STDs than condoms are. Doesn't that tell you something? It should tell you that condoms aren't as good as you think they are at preventing STDs like AIDS.
Planned Parenthood says, “Safer-sex practice allows couples to reduce their sexual health risks. Safer sex is anything we do to lower our risk of sexually transmitted infection.” But groups like Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the American Cancer Society, and the National Institutes of Health all have found that the claim that condoms help prevent STDs isn’t supported by the data. If condoms were effective against STDs, the increase in condom usage would correlate to a decrease in STDs overall, but the reverse happens.
Honest to God, folks, you really have to get a life.
