At one time in our nation's history the use of the phrase "Freedom of Choice" would never have been associated with the disgusting practice of abortion. Unfortunately, the term "choice" has been hijacked by the pro-abortion movement and consistently associated the "choice" to kill a child in the womb.
Consider the raging controversy over the radical abortion "Freedom of Choice Act" and President-Elect Barack Obama's promise to see it passed. FOCA has certainly tarnished the noble sounding phrase "Freedom of Choice" and put a certain connotation on it that undeniably associated with the legalized murder of the innocent and defenseless.
To the point of this post - Would a large American company use this language in connection with the inauguration without the intention of supporting the selection of a specifically pro-abortion president?
As noted by Barbara last week, Krispy Kreme released one such statement last week:
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet "free" can be.
Of course we all love Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (esp. when the are free - thanks!) but we were a little confused by the language the company used in its press release. It doesn't seem unreasonable for the American Life League to ask:
Just an unfortunate choice of words? For the sake of our Wednesday morning doughnut runs, we hope so. The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that "choice" is synonymous with abortion access and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand.President-elect Barack Obama promises to be the most virulently pro-abortion president in history. Millions more children will be endangered by his radical abortion agenda.
Celebrating his inauguration with "Freedom of Choice" doughnuts - only two days before the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion - is not only extremely tacky, it's disrespectful and insensitive and makes a mockery of a national tragedy.
Ironically, it appears a number of pro-abortion blogs have jumped all over ALL's press statement for suggesting the association rather than applauding the doughnut manufacture for supporting their cause. Update: Thomas Peters comments on the vile remarks directed at ALL:
This come-back is especially odd because "freedom of choice" is a liberal-invented euphemism for "abortion on demand" to begin with! Judie Brown is merely pointing out that "freedom of choice" has taken on a specific connotation tied to abortion rights (and other false "rights") and that we should sedulously avoid incorporating it into our common parlance.
Perhaps it's time for Krispy Kreme to weigh in on the matter and clarify what appears to be an unfortunate statement in support of abortion -or- a ridiculous marketing blunder. Update- In fact... .the company has:
The Inauguration Day promotion is not about any social or political issue.

I am trying to find out how many and what animal groups support abortion mills. Does the SPCA Aliance support them and how do these volunteer groups give donated money?
If I were to describe, in detail, a partial-birth abortion ( or any abortion ), most Americans - including the directors of KKD - would be egregiously offended. To all of them, I say, " The reality doesn't offend you but reporting the reality deeply offends you ". Your attitude says, " Kill the little bastards - just don't bother me with it ". And you, T.D.Jakes, continue to applaud Obama and don't dare suggest to him that he is wrong in supporting the slaying of babies.
