Abortion is the slavery issue of our time, author Eric Metaxas told about 400 people at the annual Colorado Right to Life rally Thursday on the steps of the Capitol.
"God is the one who calls you to the battle," Metaxas said to the crowd, an eclectic mix that included families with baby strollers and protesters waving signs and abortion- photo posters.
They came to mourn the 36th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion, and to be inspired to fight for the idea that the unborn are persons with an inalienable right to life.
Like slavery, the abortion fight may not end quickly, but it will be stopped - ultimately by educating one's opponents, not demonizing them, said Metaxas.
He wrote Amazing Grace, which explores how British abolitionist William Wilberforce - known as a "crazy fanatic" in his time - painstakingly overcame his 18th-century culture's entrenched acceptance of slavery.
Education was what got Shari Hutchings involved, said the 44-year-old mother of four, who took part in a march down the 16th Street Mall after the rally.
"In college we were never educated, we never learned the horror of abortion," Hutchings said. When two of her children were born prematurely, "I learned that babies were being aborted at the same age as my children - these precious babies. Now I have a passion about life," Hutchings said.

Abortion is the greatest sin of our time.
Just like eveyrthing else in this fallen world, it is mans attempt to deal with the consequences of sin.
W ehave to believe that The Holy Spirit will draw the next generation into a full relationship with Jesus Christ.
ONly a change in heart will stop this great evil..one women at a time..
Until then..keep being the salt of the earth and holding the truth up about this great evil....
Then those who do not repent and stand for abortion proudly..will have no excuse when they stand before the throne.
Abortion is like slavery in that it is inhumane and discriminates against a segment of society; It is different in that it goes beyond abusing blacks as subhuman it murders the preborn as inhuman unless "chosen" to live. This is a critical life/death difference.
Part of the problem is that our education of the masses is sloppy e.g., we talk about the anniversary of of Roe v. Wade and that's only half of the story. This is the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade AND DOE V. BOLTON! For the sake of clarity and educational accuracy, please remember that the 1973 Supreme Court handed down two decision(s) on abortion, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, and the Court said they should be read together. It was Doe v. Bolton that legalized late term abortions. Roe v. Wade established the legality of abortion with restrictions; Doe swallowed the Roe restrictions! Every reference made to Roe v. Wade, particularly in connection with late term abortions, must include Doe v. Bolton! Once presented and explained, Doe v. Bolton forges new questions, concepts and debate, and exposes the fact that partial-birth infanticide is the logical consequence of Roe and Doe.
Here are two questions to ponder. WHY do leaders of the pro-abortion establishment make it a point NEVER to mention Doe v. Bolton? And WHY do so many of the pro-life leaders cooperate with the abortion establishment by ignoring Doe v. Bolton when they refer to Roe v. Wade? Yes! We know that if Roe v. Wade is reversed, Doe v. Bolton becomes irrelevant but we also know that the pro-abortion crowd knows that when the average person understands how Doe changed Roe, they become more educated on the totality of the abortion evil. To ignore Doe v. Bolton is to cooperate with the abortion establishment's strategy of keeping Doe v. Bolton buried far from the abortion debate.
