Even BORN babies aren't safe under this guy.

It's profoundly depressing that we couldn't even get a simple majority to agree that it's wrong to wrap a whimpering baby in a towel and stick him in a closet to die.

May I ask any "pro-life" Christan's a question? Are you seriously under the impression that if we were to outlaw abortion that it would actually stop the practice all together? The reality of course is that abortion would continue, only illegally and in extraordinarily unsafe conditions. If someone is determent to abort their child, they will. Why not instead focus your efforts at convincing those who are considering abortion to seek an alternative option, in a caring and nonjudgmental manner of course.

If you look at abortion mortality for the 20th century, you see deaths falling rapidly for the entire century except for a brief leveling off in the 1950s. But to hear the abortion lobby, legalization is responsible for the fall in deaths. How did it manage? Did The Doctor go back in his TARDIS and retroactively save all those women in the 70 years before abortion was legalized? How can something that didn't take hold until the late 1960s and early 1970s manage to cause abortion mortality to fall during the previous decades?

The Planned Parenthood Conference on Abortion in America found that about 90% of abortions were being done by doctors, and that the mortality rate was falling rapidly. Nancy Howell-Lee's independent research in the 1960s also found about 90% of abortions being done by doctors, and many of the remainder by nurses or other people with medical training -- and usually with a physician providing specialized training, instruments, medications, and back-up.

What changed with legalization? Mostly it took away the fear of going to prison if you screwed up. I know offhand of three erstwhile criminal abortionists -- Jesse Ketchum, Milan Vuitch, and Benjamin Munson -- who had never had a patient death attributed to their criminal practice, who each went on to kill TWO patients in his supposedly safer legal practice. They were taking appalling chances, playing Russian roulette with their patients' lives. And why not? What risk were they really running?
