Obama or McCain - who won the debate?

| 87 Comments | No TrackBacks

With a looser format and questions from undecided voters, Barack Obama and John McCain battled on taxes, economic turmoil, global warming and healthcare. Currently, a Drudge reader's poll has McCain up 74-24 percent (9:35pm).

I note that Barack Obama would have stopped genocide in Rwanda and would have used military force in Darfur. Interesting ...

He also stated that health care is a "moral commitment". I'll have to use that the next time I'm slammed for "legislating morality". Is health care a "right" (but life is not)?

Last question: what don't you know? Obama side steps (hmmm) and McCain says the future.

Update: a lot of complaints coming in ... "boring". As in, "If people can survive this debate the economic meltdown should be no problem."

Update II: Andy McCarthy holds no punches, "We have a disaster here -- which is what you should expect when you delegate a non-conservative to make the conservative (nay, the American) case.... With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing?." Nothing.

It's your chance to comment - who had the upper hand tonight?

It was closer than the first debate, but Obama still won a second time. I think McCain is done.

wow Obama trully impresses me !!!

McCain won - hands down. He was calm, collected and coherent, with clear, intelligent answers and better policies - home and overseas - than Obama.

McCain clearly won this debate, as this format favors him; that being unscripted answers, no one guiding his answers, etc.
Obama's continual stuttering, while searching for something coherent to say was eye opening to those who were watching it with us. Most were missing it, but when brought to their attention, they caught on. Again, most people have preconceived notions on who they favor. I favor neither of the above.

Obama looked like a scared stuttering child. McCain won by a landslide.

I don't think McCain did the job. This was a 'must win' and he just didn't do it. I think this campaign is a goner.

This is my initial impression as well (regarding the debate). I'm not sure this ends the campaign.

McSame is done. Obama looked completely at ease with the most complex foreign policy issues and McCain looked just glum. This race is over.

John McCain is an American hero but he will not be the next president and that's OK because Obama will do a much better job then McCain ever would.

I like John McCain but he is done - you might as well stay home and don't even bother voting if your still a McInsane fan...

obama def won this debate..he gives me chills when he speaks and is passionate about changing this country..also very handsome!!!..McCain will do the same bush has done..whoever thinks mcCain has won this debate has money or they dont want to see a black man in the white house

McCain twice said "we need a steady hand at the tiller." But everyone observing McCain's stunts over the past several weeks can see for themselves how completely "unsteady" he has been. I think McCain is right: we need Obama as President

McCain needed a knockout and didn't do it. Obama really scored on the health care question, which I have to admit that McCain's plan is kinda scary.

McCain is done, put a fork in him.

McCain is toast. dunzo.

It wasn't a world-shaking event. If McCain hoped to turn his campaign around I think he'll have to wait for the economic news to change. If Obama wasn't showing McCain a clean pair of heels in multiple swing states I'd be saying neither won. As it is I say Obama won because this will not change things.

Sadly, I agree with Elizabeth. McCain knows who he is and how he wants to lead this country. But too many Americans who now favor style (Obama) over substance (McCain).

On a more personal note, maybe I've become too emotionally invested in this election, because I am nauseous at the thought of listening to 4 years of Obama lecturing America, talking a lot while saying little.

The sand jockey is in the burn and trauma center!

Joe,

Why in the WORLD would McCain's healthcare plan scare you while Obama's DOESN'T??

You would rather have the GOVERNMENT--the same government which just spent 700 billion of our dollars--run healthcare, rather than giving that power back to individual Americans?

Barack Obama clearly won this debate.

McCain will destroy this country if he is elected as President

Slight advantage to Obama. This debate was critical for McCain-- he needed to overwhelm Obama, especially in the town-hall environment. He did not. Tonight he was fighting for survival. That said, Obama did not deliver the knock out punch, so we still have a match. Stay tuned!

BTW, plb -- IMHO -- All laws are "morality laws". In common usage, laws referred to as such are those that legislate against what the religious consider immoral, but is moral or morally neutral to the non-religious.

Obama definitely won tonight's debate. He answered all questions with outstanding clarity and detail. He showed his usual realism and idealism. He was respectful and powerful. He won on all points. McCain's tired repetition that he is the only one who understands foreign affairs has been totally exposed as utter nonsense.

Obama is a great statesman. If any leader can bring us out of this crisis and back to our former status, he is the one to do it.
I will be thrilled to have Obama as president.

McCain went on the attack more aggressively -- but to his credit, McCain didn't make the same reckless accusations he is willing to let his running mate make about Obama -- which are just reflecting poorly on him and on his campaign (somehow they seem to be in character for Sarah Palin -- so much for being an "outsider" -- she slings mud like she's been inside the beltway for over 20 years). McCain needed a "game changer" and his performance tonight was not even close to enough to shift the most important dynamic -- the economy -- to work in his favor. Obama personified one who is better suited to assume the role of President at a very critical time in our nation's history, and his choice of Joe Biden as his running mate reflects much better on him than does McCain's choice of Sarah Palin.

Of course the Drudge Report polls suggest that McCain won: most of the people who read the Drudge Report are staunch Republicans. The Drudge Reader poll also suggested that Palin won the debate by a landslide a week ago.

Don't pay attention to Drudge: pay attention to scientific polls like Gallup. Has anyone noticed that when Gallup indicated that McCain was in the lead after the convention that Drudge was citing it daily. Now that Gallup has indicated for 11 days that Obama is the leader, Drudge no longer links to the Gallup website.

Drudge is a useful website because most news channels rip off what they cover every night from Drudge. If you want to know what your television news station is going to cover on a nightly basis check Drudge. Yet, Drudge is more of a news maker than a reporter and has his own agenda. Never forget that.

If you don't vote for Obama, you will never know what is going on in the White House.

Obama keeps it real all the time.

And I am more nauseous thinking that we could have 4 more years follwing the worst 8 we've just had. We need Obama to lead us out of this mess!

Obama - no question

Sand Jockey went down in flames. The man is in the burn and trauma cntr. Maybe now he knows he can not stop a nuke headed toward him. The crook from Chicago never had a chance!

People who already supported obama will tell you obama won this debate. I was undecided until this debate. I give it to obama that he is a great speaker...but we need action not words during this crisis that's why I will vote for Mccain. I didn't learn anymore about obama than I already knew. Obama as president just seems too risky.

As I said before that fool brother don't know crap. Get rev. Wright on the phone we have to school the sand Jockey again.

McCain has absolutely nothing constructive to say about how he would resolve the economic crisis, so he resorts to character assassination in order to keep his name in the news. And as his credibility as a viable candidate plummets, he becomes more and more desperate and irrational. Meanwhile, Palin is more than happy to do his bidding. Since she lacks a conscience, she has no reservations about piling on the slime.

However, the polls tell the tale. Their campaign has become a joke, Palin is a caricature and fodder for late night comedy acts, and McCain has reduced himself to a bitter, old man with nothing but vitriol to offer the American people. How sad...

to the person posting that made the comment about the healthcare and giving the power to the citizens than getting help from the government, you either know little about the healthcare situation in America or are the typical conservative, I personally work and provide very good insurance for my family, however there are children people on disability and those that have been put out of work ,the Bush administration spiralling our economy into disaster, and unable to either afford in the case of the out of work Americans, or provided horrible healthcare through programs that have been slashed. All of this stemming from the war on Iraq starting with gas prices which led to the rest of our problems.

People who use terms like "Sand Jockey" or use other racist slurs about either candidate should not be allowed to vote. Racism should not be tolerated by anybody.

Re: Drudge polls, this is a fair comment.

Obama won. McCain seemed too angry.

McCain is so disrespectful, condescending and petty. He's his own worse enemy.

What was that ugly thing standing next to Osana after the debate. I can see why he lost if I had to sleep with that I would blow my brains.

To Louis, Obama has shown as much action as looking directly at his competitor and taking him head on. McCain won't even as much as acknowledge him when speaking. Do you really want a person with that attutude in office when dealing with our futures?

A person who does not acknowledge me will not in any way, ever truly lead me.

While I am horrified to vote for a democrat, there is no way I can vote for McCain when he ridicules the idea of negotiating with enemies and then being forceful if they won't give us Bin Laden. The economy is in the tank as is my money thanks to Bush and McCain will just follow him. I will have to hope the Supreme Court straightens out the backwards issue of abortion, because neither of these guys care and I will go with Obama to at least keep our country borderline solvent and only in the battles that matter.

If Obama was a white man he'd win this election by a landslide. Unfortunately, this country is so full of racist idiots such as "Osama" and "Jesse Jackson" who posted comments here tonight.

One thing that I think has come from this particular debate is the fact that both candidates seem to be spiralling into ad hominem arguments that are not advancing the issues any further. Neither Obama, nor McCain, were able to take the high road in this one, and I think that a lot of thatis stemming from the extremely negative ads that both campaigns are flinging at each other right now.

Maybe both parties are getting tired from nearly 2 years of campaigning, but I have a feeling that both are going to limp to the finish line unless something major happens in the next few weeks.

What really strikes me about this election is how similar it is to the 1976 campaign between Carter and Ford. It was a tight race until Ford made a major gaffe about Russia during a debate. With one more debate to go anything could happen, but it seems like the American public is siding with Obama and there is a very obvious sense of desperation coming from the McCain camp.

48 years ago a white woman ran away from home and resulted on a child born in the ghetto. After cheating and abusing hie way through life he ended up a senator. He now owe all the crime world and has to promise a plow, 40 acres, and a mule to every one in the country. How ever lucky thing he had health insurance because the beating was so bad tonight he is at the burn and trauma center.

Thanks PLB, just trying to add a more sobering voice.

Speaking as a person of Middle Eastern heritage, the term 'Sand Jockey' is offensive and racist. Throwing insults around will not sway people or change the facts on the ground.

Did anyone realize how many times McCain piggy-backed Obama statements? Saying word for word in the exact tone.

It was like hearing an echo, echo, echo...

"You would rather have the GOVERNMENT--the same government which just spent 700 billion of our dollars--run healthcare, rather than giving that power back to individual Americans?"

Be fair. Obama's plan is not a government-run proposal. He's advocating standards and funding at the federal level, but not a government bureaucracy administering health care services. that would still be privatized as it should be.

McCain's plan is scary in that it would effectively put an end to the concept of group coverage, which provides the best bargaining position for consumers. If we individually want a plan and go to a insurance company, individually we have no bargaining power, especially if we have pre-existing conditions.

John McCain himself would not qualify for health coverage under his own plan.

I'd much rather our federal money help give health care to people who need it instead of spending it on an immoral war. That is, after all, part of what being pro-life is about.

Neither McCain nor Obama can criminalize abortion, as much as I would like them to. What they can do is minimize the pain and suffering here and abroad through sensible plans like health care expansion and swiftly ending the unnecessary war in Iraq.

Well said. This is a typical ad hominem attack, usually leveled when one is lacking substance. IMHO, despite his presentation, there is plenty to say regarding Obama's socialistic agenda - no need to attack the man.

"... keeps it real" -- thanks for the laugh. Can you say "ACORN", "Born Alive Infant Protection Act", ...

Obama is not a socialist. I've not heard him wanting to nationalize any business or industry.

I can't wait to vote for Obama. McCain was bitter and petty. Everyone knows that Roe vs Wade will never be overturned. Let's save the lives of our troops and vote Obama.

There's probably cause for nausea all around. :o)

But how, exactly, will Obama lead us anywhere, much less out of the mess we're in?

He has never challenged the leaders of his own party. He has never done anything that wasn't politically expedient.

He speaks of change but has never, ever done anything to show us he can actually produce change.

Sorry if I didn't come across as fair. I'll try harder this time.

I'm not saying McCain's plan is perfect. In fact, with a Democratic Congress, he'd be lucky to see healthcare proposals like that come across his desk. But I believe that I am more interested in finding the best healthcare coverage for my situation rather than a lethargic bloated bureaucracy.

I'd much rather our federal money help give health care to people who need it instead of spending it on an immoral war. That is, after all, part of what being pro-life is about.

You had me at "be fair." Here's where you lost me. It's not a zero-sum game. Whether or not the war is immoral (which I respectfully but strongly dispute), the money from war is not easily fungible for healthcare, though candidates talk as if it were.

Btw, the "I'd much rather" paragraph was a quote, not my own words. Sorry 'bout the confusion.

I agree with you, John, that Obama had a slight advantage in this debate. Some of it was that he used more specifics than McCain when detailing various plans. For example, when asked about how to deal with Al Quaeda exploiting their position in NW Pakistan, McCain basically replied, "I know what to do, I can handle it, but I won't tell you." In contrast, Obama identified a process he would employ to respond to the situation that sounded quite workable to me, though I'm sure some fine-tuning will be needed.

McCain came off as more personable and human in this debate than the last, though Obama seemed more levelheaded and focused most of the time.

Overall, I think this was a more interesting debate to watch. Maybe the town hall format made for greater movement by the candidates which kept one's eyes from getting tired of the setting.

All leanings aside, Obama won this one folks. Now seeing as how this is a pro-life forum, I would like to also add, that it would be nice for all of you to try and get off your legislation kick. A law against abortion just means more broken laws and more abortions in Mexico. Let's get the abortion effort into outreach for adoption, women's health education and start changing people's minds rather than law. Let's not let give our pro-life vote to war mongering profiteers any more.

Jeff A. in New Mexico

Your welcome for the laugh.
Does PLB stand for "Probably Like Bush"?

Cause the way I look at it this country needs someone fresh and who is a "realist". People don't live like they used to in those western days any more.

Real Talk...

On the pro-life issue, I think Obama has a point that Americans' minds need to be turned against viewing abortion as the easy, automatic choice. I personally believe this is a matter of training children (daughters in particular, who have to endure the consequences of pregnancy, whether aborted or not), to be more self-respecting of and careful with their bodies. Secondly, parents need to encourage their children to view children as gifts to treasure rather than as burdens to bear. Also, parents need to remind children that the only reason THEY exist is because the parents didn't abort them. I'm not saying this is going to prevent genuinely selfish people from committing abortions. However, there are many countries around the world where abortion is available but where it is used by less than 15% of the female population as a way of dealing with pregnancy. I think you have to change people's minds.

But this doesn't really have that much to do with the debate, does it? :)

Good commment, Jeff. America will never come to a consensus on abortion, but surely we can agree to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies through available healthcare, adoption alternatives, contraceptives, and sexual education. Pro Life also means bringing our soldiers home alive, reducing health risks associated with pollution and global warming, and researching new medical techniques to fight terminal illnesses. My vote is Obama.

Get off the legislation kick? Isn't the bailout law supported by both major candidates a clear example of that. Now, I'm pro-Life. No, I reject a permament legislation kick. We just want a banning kick. We need to eliminate Roe v. Wade, because Roe increased abortions and agitated the nation. We should have adoption and other help, but I won't be intimidated and shut up about babies getting their heads chopped off. There is nothing wrong with laws banning certain abortion procedures either like the Laci Peterson Law (which even liberals supported). Also, there are laws against rape, murder, and other evils (People violate these laws all of the time). Just because we have laws doesn't mean we can't have a law against abortion. The debate was a tie. Each showed their opinions.

Obama and McCain responded and counterrattacked each others' positions. It's ironic that some people call McCain a war monger when both of them want war in Afghanistan. Afghanistan shouldn't be bombed since that nation has nothing to do with 9/11 just like Iraq. Also, Obama wants to strike Pakistan if he supposedly sees Osama bin Laden. No, I don't believe in violating Pakistan's sovereignity and calling Pakistan's leader a dictator (when there is a new President there trying to make reforms). McCain is wrong for discounting any major discussions with Iran without preconditions. I don't believe in supporting warmongers, but warmongers exist in the Democratic and the Republican parties (not just one party). Also on abortion, banning immoral laws are different from making new laws.

Many Pro-Lifers are against the war in Iraq and have care for the environment. So, it's really silly to stereotype all pro-lifers as one way. Also, it's very false to say you're anti-war when you support war in Afghanistan and other nations in the world.

I will vote for THAT ONE! GOBAMA 2008! Single Moms for Obama!!

Before this debate I was an Obama supporter. Now I honestly think that McCain is with out a doubt the man we need for the job. Although Obama seemed confident, he didn't have the answers. I am not a fan of taxes being raised or pulling our troops out of Iraq. We need to finish the job. Go McCain!!!

Winning this debate doesn't go to who can "act" to impress...after all, this isn't Hollywood. This is a chance for us, the American people, to decide who has the character, judgement and wisdom to lead. I'm neither Republican or Democrat, but after John McCain said there is too much at risk for "On the job training"...my mind was made up. I'm going with the only true leadership I saw displayed. Hollywood can have Obama. And tell me why in the world Obama can run for President while some of his "friends" and close associates seek to bring America down? But, of course, that's news to him - or so he says. People wake up - something is very wrong when you can be considered for the highest ranking position and have the personal judgement of a fly.

What job do we need to finish in Iraq?

Finding WMDs? - There aren't any
Deposing Saddam? - Done
Killing Bin Laden? - He's not there
Unifying the country? - Not possible
Stabilizing the region? - WE destabilized it and our presence continues to destabilize it

Timothy, thanks for the reply. I too am PRO LIFE. In fact, I have a two month old son named David who was prediagnosed with Down's syndrome and the concept of abortion never even crossed our minds. Since having my son, I've had to battle relentlessly with insurance companies and hospitals through his multiple surgeries (one being the closure of a centrical malformation in his heart). After having spent thousands of my income and having unbelievable deductions removed from my paycheck to cover an FSA account which is, the way I see it, taxxing me like you wouldn't believe, I was absolutely in disbelief to see Bush veto the children's healthcare bill last October 2007. Yes it was a bipartisan bill, but inevitably it was mostly supported by democrats and vetoed by a republican. Republican's do not own the Pro Life franchise and anyone who thinks so is entirely mistaken. As I said, I wish we could spend our time educating, changing culture, reaching out, rather than lobbying sleazy politicians. Again thanks, and God bless.

Topic of discussion: If we could raise a tax exclusively to help cover the cost of adoption, developmental therapies and emergency surgeries for special needs children, as well as cover women to take six months off from work to nurse and care for their newborn infants (as they do in most developed nations already except the US) as a means to combat unwanted pregnancies and offset abortions would all conservatives then approve of such a tax increase? Please comment.

Both guys seemed kind of uninformed. Good luck America.

Obama clearly won the debate. What does it take to make the public understand that ,simply,
McCain is a Republican, the logic follows:
1. Bush is a Republican
2. McCain voted 90% of the time for the Bush policies.
3. What was the small 10% he disagreed with Bush.?
4. Bush and the Republicans got us into this economic mess we are in now.
5. Does it not conclude that McCain is 90% at fault for the mess we are in now.
6. Do the math if you don't want to put alot of thought into this.
Don't let the "surge" fool you...the reason for the "apparent success" is not because of Petreaus, but because we are bribing the Sunnis to not fight the Shites..
Bush and McCain are desperate...
Check this out. and check out Obama's resume and credentials..He is a brilliant man who does not need 22 years of corruption to make him a leader. HE IS A LEADER AND HE IS BRILLIANT.

McCain won on points: The second presidential debate goes into the record books, and this time both men managed to stick closer to their game plans. Barack Obama rid himself of the “John is right” tic that appeared in various forms almost a dozen times in the first debate. John McCain gave a much more focused response on economic issues. In the end — literally, in this case — McCain prevailed on his strength on foreign policy and national security.

- Ed Morrissey

Oh come on you conservatives, you really want to vote for a man who left his first wife and children, AND a vice president with a pregnant teenage daughter. Point fingers all you want to-but your candidate isn't not the "holy one."

Obama won that debate last night. McCain only promises to do things. He thinks we can get everything all done, fixed, and very quickly. Yeah right! Why don't you sugar coat it a little more- that way we all puke.

To Jeff A.

Thanks for the words. Hopefully, we can get common ground going forward with adoption, pregnancy centers and other solutions.

Michelle, McCain is not perfect. Palin and her family is not perfect. Only one human being has ever been perfect...and he is not running for political office.

But I don't support McCain and Palin because they're perfect. And no one who knows anything about Obama's stance on partial birth abortion and babies who survive "botched" abortions can claim that he is perfect.

As someone who believes the sanctity of life is more important than any other issue, I ask myself one question: Which candidate will do more to defend the defenseless, give a voice to the voiceless? While McCain is not perfect, his record on pro-life issues (aside from embryonic stem cell research) is perfect. I will vote for him.

My opinion is McCain won the debate.
I trust him and think he is more sincere than
obama.
I think obama is too smooth to trust.
I just dont get why people like him and dont
see how transparent he is.

I know all the media polls say obama is winning
but no one asked my opinion.

A demorcrat who is voting McCain/Palin

to michelle

all the liberals put aside the fact that they
associated with rev wright for over 20years.
he spoke against whites,Americans and the obamas
took all of this in -this rev even married them
If my priest said anything racists or unamerican
I would walk out of that church so fast and never
go back!!!!! There is something wrong with this
picture -but people choose to ignore something
this serious.

a conservative demorcrat for McCain/Palin

Y'all got it right, I don't trust nobody that would get near that preacher.

Sara Palin is a real woman of the lord. I even seen her get praised by a preacher on a video... Even tho that preacher was a black. I think they should set up a church right there in the ovale office when Sara and McCain get in the white house!

I definatley think Mccain won the debate. He will probably lose the election though. IT is funny how all these white people endorse obama. When he wins I ask them to go to the churh he attends and see if they will be allowed in. And when the taxes get raised and even more small businesses close I will sit back and say "ha! I told you he shouldn't be president"

It's a shame that he would get elected with all the negative, racist, anti american people he surrounds himself with. Show me your friends and I shall show you who you are. ACorn! Ayres! Rev. Wright! I mean COme on!

And Bush is not Mccain! Mccain would not give us 8 more years of BS! HE woud actually try to fix it instead of just smooth talking about it and Palin would have his back! IT might take along time but he would do it.

by the way the crisis we are in came from democrats back when Jimmy Carter was president and passed the equal housing bill! But democrats and the media want you to believe it was Republicans and bush. I am sorry 1 single person can't cause all this.

If you want non biased news campaign coverage watch FOX or BBC not CNN ABC, NBC or CBS which are pro democrat controlled! They even have pro democrats running the debates and monitoring what questions will be answerd! DOn't Believe the HYPE!!

This message is in response to John. I believe Obama has good views about our economy but they are just that views and ideas that I honestly feel will fail due to his inexperience. There should be a minimum requirement of duty in the senate or as governer to be president. HE might be better qualified in 4 or 8 years. I believe what you say about the democratic controlled media. It is very biased. It is sad that people believe so dearly what the media tells them. Chose for yourself and not for the media! Elect America's candidate not the Media's! Vote Mccain\Palin!

I really dont think the polls are correct -wait
till election day and maybe people will come
to their senses and vote for McCain
I say this many of times-I dont know why people
are mesmerized by obama -he doesnt fool me

Demorcrat for McCain/Palin

I watched the debate and I still can't decide who won. Obama said he would lower my taxes (I don't make more than $250K) and he said I have a right to have health care but I don't know if that's just the liberal media confusing me.

I want to hear more talking points so I can make up my mind. Like, why doesn't one of the candidates talk more about freedom? I know government is at fault for everthing but McCain's been in government for like 30 yrs. But he's a Republican so he hates government. But... he's been in for 30 years.

All I know is I hate the media b/c they tried to make Gov. Palin look bad. So what if she doesn't know all the answers to questions. Stupid elite media. Knowing things about stuff is sooooooooooo overrated.

Drill baby drill!

To all McCain supporters:

He just announced plans to tax us for another $300 billion last night - for people who shouldnt have gotten loans in the first place!

I have never been a fan of John McCain, but until recently I was going to vote for the man anyway. The last few weeks have shown him to be completely erratic. First the economy is sound, then it's in crisis, then he's suspending his campaign to go to Washington to fix the problem (but gets side trakced doing tv interviews and talk shows in New York City), then he totally sidetracks the negotiations, then votes to nationalize our economy (red menace anyone?), and now he says he wants to spend even more of my tax dollars to bail out people who should be kicked out on the street for stupidity.

I guess a 72 year old man is allowed to show a little senility, but this is too much to handle for 4 long years.

Steady hand? Crazy old man.

Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran!
...and Pakistan, and Afganistan, and any other damn place we want to!

People, if we don't start acting like the superpower we are nobody is going to respect AMERICA anymore!

Obama doesn't have the guts to blow up Iran, but John McCain sure as XXXX does!!!

You are obviously a republican trying desperately to garner votes for a buffoon of a candidate who can't even figure out his own campaign slogans without copying his op
