Can a Christian Vote for Barack Obama?

I have a hard time understanding how an informed Christian could in good conscience vote for Barack Obama given the following (from George Grant):

  1. Obama's repeated pledge to sign the "Freedom of Choice Act"--a bill that would effectively strike down every guideline, regulation, restriction, and limit on the multi-billion dollar abortion industry in all 50 states. [my note: Obama stated this is his "top priority"]

  2. Obama's determined opposition to banning or regulating "Partial Birth Abortion"--a barbaric ritualistic form of infanticide.

  3. Obama's repeated and longstanding opposition to the "Born Alive Infant Protection Act"--a position from which even Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League cautiously backed away. [my note: see BornAliveTruth for the details]

Despite his testimony to Rick Warren, Obama's rejection of the God-given intrinsic dignity of human life is itself a rejection of God and reveals a horribly distorted view of justice that provides a basis for any number evils.

Is this organization running any political advertisement. I would like to make a contribution.

The answer is, "No."

Thanks - we don't take contributions either.

My Name is Daniel LaHood
[snip]

I wrote this after attending Pope Benedicts Mass at Nats Stadium in Washington. My wife and I are Lay Missionaries of Charity in Forest Glen Maryland. I am sending this as a letter to the Editor.

Before Pope Benedict came to America to celebrate Mass in New York and Washington, it was revealed that as a young boy in Germany he had had a cousin with Down Syndrome. One day a Nazi doctor came and claimed his cousin for the Third Reich. Taken to be “cared for” at the “hospital” young Joseph Ratzinger never saw his cousin again: one of the host of “useless eaters” marked for extermination by that brutal regime.

My wife and I operate St. Joseph’s House, a daycare and respite care home for handicapped children. As it happened one of the children we care for, a wheelchair bound young lady, was chosen along with three other handicapped folks to carry the gifts up to the altar before the consecration at the Mass at Nationals Stadium in Washington D.C. on April 17, 2008. One of these was James, a 30ish man who works in the Officer’s Club at Andrews AFB. James has Down Syndrome. He was chosen to carry the large host which would become the Body of Christ lifted up before the assembled. As James with great ceremony advanced toward the Pope, his native enthusiasm overcame his reserve and he started to run. Simultaneously the Holy Father leapt from his chair and walked towards James with his arms outstretched. We have a picture of this moment which I cannot look at without tearing up. What did he see as he gazed so lovingly at James? I believe he saw his cousin. I believe he saw the face of Jesus. And I believe that his great prayer as he elevated that host on that impossibly beautiful day was “As long as you did to these the least of my brethren, you did it to Me.”

The next day April 18th, a boy was born to of all people, the Governor of Alaska. They named him Trig.

I can't vote for Obama. Here's why.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5qu87aXc20

The answer is now clear - yes, Christians can vote for Obama - and they have. The real question is, how could a single Christian vole for Palin, who enjoys taking innocent lives in the name of "sport"?

Sarah Palin kills humans for sport?

Palin kills innocent non-human animals. Guess if it wasn't illegal, she'd be shooting humans too!

"Palin kills innocent non-human animals." Normaly people know that animals are non-human.

Next thing you know a nut will claim Jesus wasn't a Christian. He killed "innocent non-human animals." He axyphxiated fish and drowned pigs. If guns had been invented he have been "shooting humans too."

im sorry but palin is so much better than obama , obama is for abortion and that just AINT RIGHT AND HE IS A MUSLIM AND I KNOW I DIDNT VOTE FOR HIM >>>>> GO!!!! MCAIN AND PALIN !!!!!!

yes, we can vote for him, and yes, i did.

jesus said the way to heaven is narrow, he didn't say we should be.

Dear Lou - only non-human animals are non-human. When you mention the Earth's animals, or fauna, it would normally include all animal species, including the primates, and humans as one of pimate species. Hope you understand now. My post was in response to Dan who clearly (and justly) doesn't see a huge difference between human and non-human animals, hence teh need for my clarification.

Also, Lou, to be precise, Jesus definitely wasn't a Christian. Christianity wasn't invented yet. Even the most fundamentalist Biblical literalist will admit that. As far as I know, Jesus was a vegetarian. There is no mention of lamb at the passover meal the way all gospels describe it. Jesus killing fish and pigs cannot be treated literally anyway - unless you really believe that epilepsy is caused be demons etc., like people did centuries ago before modern medicine. You may even believe Jesus slept with a spear under his pillow but I remember his idea was to turn the other cheek and love one's enemies. This is at the opposite ned of the spectrum from "Christians" brandishing firearms in the name of Jesus.

Dear I HATE ABORTION - a strange Muslim who goes to church! It shouldn't matter what a president's religion is anyway. If a good president is a Satanist, it shouldn't matter. Also, I am not aware he is forcing anyone to have an abortion. It's good not to impose your narrow views on others. Unlike those "pro-lifers" who somehow do not fight for the abolition of the death penalty, which is America's disgrace. Not to mention the way non-human animals are treateed in slaughterhouses...

Forcing anyone? Planned Parenthood is trying to force Obama to support giving taxpayer money to force people to have abortions with the UNFPA policy. Also, Abortion is murder whether you skeptics like it or not. When you rip an innocent baby limb from limb (which is different from the death penalty), it's intentional murder of an innocent human being. That is wrong. Also, abortion is a disgrace. Animals being mistreated in slaughterhouses is wrong, but to diminish abortion's destructive nature is the real disgrace. You pro-abortionists are here trying to speak your mind and that's mind. Yet, we will be here just as potent to answer you back in a direct manner. Also, our views aren't narrow, which is another lie. Many of us believe in fighting poverty, fighting against forced abortion, loving organic foods, etc. Also, imposing certain morality is apart of the Constitution. We impose anti-lying, anti-murder, and anti-suppression of liberties in American society daily.

Also, Jesus wasn't a coward. He said have a sword if he didn't have one. Of course, he didn't banish a firearms since guns weren't invented yet. Yet, banishing a firearm to harrash people is wrong, yet the Constitution says we have a right to personally own one. All species include plant life. Eating plant life is the destruction of plant living organisms. So, we have a right to eat plants and meat if we wish or to not eat meat if we wish.

I'll stop eating meat and call for an end to capital punishment when we get a Democratic President who wants to overturn Death Roe.

If no Christian voted for Sen. (now
president-elect) Obama, the Christian bible which Christians read states that God rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he wills. (Daniel 4th chapter) This same bible tells Christians to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2nd chapter), and in Romans 13th chapter it tells Christians that the powers that be are ordained of God. As much as it saddens me and make me angry, abortion has probably existed, Christians, since the fall of man- these are not political issues, they are moral issues. Morality cannot be legislated. Christians should know that only God can change the hearts of man.

If morality can't be legislated, then advocate the repeal of all laws banning rape, murder, slavery, and other moral ills from the United States Constitution. Morality has been legislated for thousands of years. Abortion is legislated in the evil decision of Roe v. Wade.

By Timothy

I would never advocate the repeal of these laws! But it is worth noting that even though they exist, more and more prisons are being built to punish the immorality of the people who commit the crimes you mentioned. These laws govern and punish wrong conduct, but don't seem to deter it very well.
After 35 years Christians are still endeavoring to elect someone who will overturn this terrible law, Roe v Wade. Long before this diabolical law, however, women were murdering their babies. Many of the mothers died in the process. I truly believe that God can change any heart; and though one may not be perfect, the desire to do right is always there.

I eating plants morally equal to eating animal flesh? I don't think so. To me being a Christian and esting meant is a contradiction. Being a Christian and pro-choice isn't. Abortion is not the same as murder, though it is taking a life. But the real world is not black and white, and taking a life is in some cases justified. And one more thing - being pro-choice does not mean being pro-abortion. If someone is against abortion, then they shouldn't do it. But imposing your views on others who might disagree is wrong.

You have a right to eat plants solely if you wish. Animals eat meat constantly. Humans have a right to eat meat or foods with protein if they want to. Pro-Choice to me is being pro-abortion, becuase pro-choicers still want abortion to continue under the guise of it being classified as "choice." Really, abortion is anti-choice because abortion eliminates the choices of the unborn has in their lives. Abortion eliminates choices and it doesn't promote them. Abortion on demand is murder, because abortion destroys innocent unborn human life in the womb intentionally (with premediation). No one said that the real world is totally black and white. Yet, there are moral absolutes, which are black and white. Plainly, we have no right to kill innocent human beings at all. Imposing views? The Constitution is the pure essence of imposing views and morality in our society from our free speech rights, being anti-murder, being anti-perjury, handling voting issues, imposing legitimate civil rights morals, and imposing other forms of morality unto people. We have all the free speech right to express our views and you will never stop us.

I'm sorry, I fail to see those black-and-white moral absolutes. Can't think of a single one. Except perhaps what Jesus is reported to have said, that the most important thing is to love your neighbour (as well as an enemy). This, to me, extends to the whole nature, after all all life on Earth evolved from a single cell. The so-called "Christian" right doesn't seem to believe in Jesus or what he said - instead of turning the other cheek they believe in bombing innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan - otherise the evil president Bush would agree to regonise the international courts and American soldiers could go on trial for their war crimes. I'm not surprised Muslims hate Bush and America. They are given more than enough good reasons to. Still, let's celebrate the change of regime. Hopefully America's next president will even support gay marriages, as Obama is too far right for me.

Thanks for the comments. I will say ironically that accepting the view of no moral absolutes is the essence of accepting an absolute in it of itself. I will mention that not murdering innocent people, and being against rape are simple moral absolutes. These absolutes are black and white. Additionally, many religious conservatives (I know of from the Internet and other places) have expressed opposition of the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan since day 1. There are people from across the political spectrum who have expressed opposition to much of the policies of the Bush administration. Recognize international courts? Not all international courts are perfect. Our courts in America are perfectly capable to handling any American criminal regardless if they wear the uniform or not. There is nothing wrong with international agreements created legally, but our American laws should have precedence above international law. In other words, we should maintain our national sovereignity.

Also, Bush is a puppet on many levels. He's accountable for his mistakes of course. Yet, the problems of America historically extend beyond George W. Bush. There is no justification to hate anyone personally. Muslim radicals butchering people in Sudan is no justification for me to hate all Muslims. As for the new regime (as you put it), there will be things I agree with it on. There will be things I disagree with it on.

No worries, it's OK to be ironic. Guess I have no choice but to agree with you on not murdering innocent people and being agains rape. However, if such are your absolutes, then you could not have possible voted for Bush or McCain, as their unjust wars bring just that - murdering and rape of innocents in Iraq, Afrghanistan and the like. I think international courts should have jurisdiction over Americans who commit crimes abroad. History shows that American criminals are always protected by their government, as long as they commit crimes on behalf of this government. This discussion was about whether Christians should vote for Obama. I think W've proven that being a Christian has nothing to do with who we vote for - no candidate is perfect and our conscience should be the guide.

According to the Word of God, abortion is one of the worst murders a human being can commit. About abortion, the Scripture says, "In the secret place doth he murder the innocent" (Psalms 10:8). The “secret place” is the womb of a mother. Definitely, the baby is an “innocent.” No person who is fully aware of another’s total innocence normally kills that other human being. Even wild beasts such as like lions and tigers do not kill their own kind, but rather, they fight to defend and protect them. But, today, man has made himself even lower than brute beasts by slaying innocent unborn babies.

Wow, that's quite an overstretch... If this the most obvious place where the Bible mentions abortion, then it looks to me like the issue is not mentioned there at all. It clearly refers to abortions in villages. Most hospitals and clinics that carry out terminations are in towns and cities, so am sure they are OK.

PS: what's "doth"?
