With any number of significant issues worth addressing with serious journalists, David Letterman gave John McCain a "serious roasting Wednesday night for scrubbing an appearance roughly one hour before the taping." I wouldn't blame either candidate for canceling an appearance with Letterman in favor of almost anyone else, particularly at a time when the country faces a significant economic crisis.
Beyond this, I sure hope Americans have enough depth to evaluate presidential candidates on the basis of their objective stands (yes, on issues such as abortion) and view of justice, civil liberties and economic policy rather than whether or not a Late Night Talk Show host feels snubbed.

who in their right mind would McCain & Palin after all that's gone on in the last 2 wks? neither mccain nor palin says anything besides general ambiguous statements like "we need to clean up wall street." they are lost and hopeless!
I like McCain but I think Letterman's point was not that McCain bailed out on the show but McCain said he was in a rush to save the country and had to run to the airport but he was doing Katie Couric's show next door. That kind of blatant dismissal and lying is unbecoming of a presidential candidate. And lastly, I agree that you cannot just quit midgame just because things got tough. McCain needs to show that he can handle multiple crisis simultaneously. His suspension of the campaign makes it look like a political gimmick and his refusal to debate makes me think what is it that he is trying to hide. with so little time left before the elections, i want to see all 4 of them together debating critical issues like the economy and the health care.
and to tell you the truth, abortion is not what is on people's minds right now when our economy is in the tank. that maybe a serious issue for only those low information single issue voters. but for the rest of the country, there are countless polls that show that they are worried about basic everyday living and paying their bills.
You seem to forget that the John M camp LIED and said that he had to forgo the Letterman show to return to Washington (and that he was suspending his campaign), only to show up elsewhere in NY to do more campaign marketing. Shame.
The reputable never-exaggerating David Letterman establishes McCain as a liar. Meanwhile, Obama lied too. It's a circus w/out substance. Ron Paul was right.
If you have ever watched David Letterman, the man is quite intelligent and equally, if not more, concerned about the status of our country than anybody else. He would have asked serious questions and listened intently and with respect.
Now I realize why republicans didn't want John McCain. If I were as clueless as John McCain on EVERYTHING I would be afraid to debate Obama too. Big deal, he was a war hero, how does that qualify him for president? Sarah Palin is a horrible governor and mother, how does she qualify? Can you imagine what the right wing corporate owned and controlled media would say if it were Obama w/a pregnant teenage daughter? Or a drug addicted son that has to go to jail or join the military? Or wants her state to secede from the Union? I thought we couldn't get anyone dumber than Bush but I think McCain and Palin are right up there! Joe Biden gave 54 interviews and Sarah Palin had given 0, up until the very pathetic interview w/Charlie Gibbons. She's a real pitbull allright!
It's a lie from some of you that abortion isn't an important. It is. People who care about it aren't folks with low IQs, so enough with the silly stereotypes about people. The reality is that both Obama and McCain are puppets. As for John McCain, that is his personal choice. McCain appears to be trying to bailout of the debates for political reasons. It would be great to talk about education, the economy, and other important issues. Yet, to try to diminish abortion in an attempt to deny its ugliness is really sad.
Where did Palin support secession (which America did from the British Empire. All secession isn't evil)? Now, how is the media so-called conservative when they support the bailout, mocking Christian, support the war on terror, abortion on demand, they are anti-gun rights, and most media heads are liberal or libertarian. Name one corporate media head from the 5 mega media companies being conservative. Don't say Rupert Murdoch since he's a libertarian (along with some of his children being liberal) and preemptive warfare, torture, etc. are hardly old school conservative ideals. Obama would be given more criticism from FOX if her daughter had a child out of wedlock, but most of the media loves Obama. Bush's policies are hardly conservative with overspending, the growth of government in unprecedented levels (even more so than LBJ), etc. This doesn't justify McCain's errors, but I wouldn't vote for neither McCain or Obama. I have to vote my conscience and vote for a Third party person.
