Adult Stem Cells May Help Childhood Motor Neuron Disease

David Prentice notes that Researchers at the University of Milan have published results indicating that adult neural stem cells might be used as a treatment for spinal muscular atrophy. The disease is the second most common genetic disorder leading to death in childhood and there is currently no cure.

My daughter 8 months old has spinal muscular atrophy type 1.

Please let us know is their any clinical trials of SMA type 1 over the resent finding by the university of Milan abount tratment of SMA through stem cells

Unfortunately I'm not aware of human trials in the US related to the therapy above (although there are others http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=SMA+type+1). I have read about injections that can be obtained abroad which are fairly expensive and not guaranteed.

My son who is soon to be 2 yrs old, was diagnosed with cortical dysplsia. He is developmentally delayed, and I am wondering can he benefit from the stem cell treatment? Who would I need to come in contact with? Or is there any other treatment that has been heard of other than surgery because he is not a candidate.
