PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT TO BE ON NOVEMBER BALLOT
Colorado for Equal Rights Submits Nearly Double Required Signatures
DENVER, COLORADO (13 May 2008) - Colorado for Equal Rights submitted 131,243 petition signatures to place the personhood amendment on the ballot this November, 55,000 more than is required. The amendment extends the legal definition of 'person' to include the moment of fertilization.
"We are seeing an awakening of the powerful grassroots movement," said Kristi Burton, spokesperson for Colorado for Equal Rights Campaign. "Thousands of individuals along with myself are making the commitment to not rest until every human being is equally protected by love and by law."
Colorado for Equal Rights enlisted the help of hundreds of churches and more than a thousand volunteers to collect the requisite number of signatures.
"The Grassroots of Colorado made this happen. But we could not have done this without the help of pro-life organizations, such as American Life League, Colorado Right to Life, Human Life International, and others who gave us a tremendous amount of support," said Burton. "We have an amazing amount of momentum and a dynamic support base. By November, we know that the citizens of Colorado will realize the personhood of every human being, born and preborn."
Colorado for Equal Rights is a statewide grassroots organization of concerned citizens who value human life. Colorado for Equal Rights is sponsoring the Human Life Amendment to the Colorado constitution, stating "(t)he term 'Person' or 'Persons' shall include any human from the time of fertilization." The Human Life Amendment initiative is currently working to gather petition signatures to place the Amendment on the November 2008 ballot.
