Al Sharpton's Interesting Choice of Words

The Wall Street Journal/Best of the Web Today's James Taranto pointed to an unusual use of the words "miscarriage" and "abortion" by civil rights activist Al Sharpton.

With his astute sense of irony and tongue-in-cheek commentary, Taranto headlines his remarks yesterday on Sharpton's comment "Antiabortion Al?" (Scroll down to last item.)

While protesting the acquittal of three New York City detectives in the 2006 shooting death of bridegroom Sean Bell, (reported here by WCBS-TV), Sharpton said:

"We intend to pursue this case with all deliberate speed and determination. This verdict is one round down, but the fight is far from over," he said. "What we saw in court today was not a miscarraige [sic] of justice, this was an abortion of justice. Justice was aborted."

Scales of Justice

Sharpton's choice of words are telling, indeed.

A survivor of China's forced-abortion policy is warning Americans they share the responsibility for that nation's holocaust of government-mandated death through their consumerism.

The testimony comes from Shiu Yon Zhou, whose ordeal in which she lost the child who would have been her first-born has been played before Congress, on national television and in the media.

But she spoke to WND today in light of the 2008 Olympics which are scheduled in Beijing and to counter statements being released by the Chinese government that the human rights situation, long deplored as one of the worst on record, is improving.

Her story was revealed to WND in sometimes-halting English, as she still works to grasp the idiomatics of the language she now teaches to her three children, ages 6, 4, and 2, at home.

Truths about PPFA keep popping up day after day

Planned Parenthood has just taken hits from two heavy hitters.

Blue boxing glovesPink boxing gloves

Writer and actor Ben Stein lets his audience know that Planned Parenthood's founder Margaret Sanger was a firm believer in eugenics during his clever, God-friendly, new film Expelled.

And, nationally syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher asks the question "Is Planned Parenthood Above the Law?" in her April 22 column (here in Philadelphia's The Bulletin, where I first read it, or here on Townhall.com).

Gallager notes this recent expose on PPFA:

Planned Parenthood's latest trouble began when a feisty pro-life student magazine called Planned Parenthood offices in seven states, posing as an openly racist donor seeking to make sure his check could be earmarked to abort "a black baby." The resulting phone conversations are horrifying listening. (Judge for yourself at www.youtube.com./watch?v=zwif0VMW3c4.)

The columnist also reminds readers of a previous sting operation exposing PPFA's willingness to allow a minor with an older boyfriend to lie about her age in order to acquire an abortion.

Gallagher writes "Help pedophiles and racists? For too many Planned Parenthood employees, it's apparently all in a day's work."

Apparently.

New Stanek WND column, "Abortion as art sport"

WND%20logo.gif

In search of taboos to breach for breach's sake, the liberal artistic community is finally dredging the bottom of the barrel: abortion.

Interesting that it took them longer to mock abortion than crucifixes.

You likely missed the comedy video sketch Damon Wayans of WayoutTV.com posted last week called "AbortionMan." So I'll describe it for you, or you can view it at YouTube.

In "AbortionMan" a young woman calls her boyfriend to tell him she's pregnant....

[T]he sleazy guy hangs up the phone and calls for AbortionMan to rescue him from the plight of progeny....

AbortionMan makes quick work of things, kicking and punching the mother in the abdomen and stomping on it when she collapses to the ground. The stomp aborts the crying, bloody preborn baby, who flies through the air and lands in the bushes where he or she presumably dies....

Damon made this sketch for the negative attention buzz, to make people like me mad. Celebrities desperate to hold the waning spotlight are so sad....

One person getting way more negative attention than she expected was Yale art student Aliza Shvarts.

Last week, the Yale Daily News announced Shvarts' exhibit in a senior art show opening yesterday would feature a number of her own very young self-aborted children, mixed with blood and smeared on plastic sheeting wrapped around a cube and suspended from the ceiling.

On the surrounding walls videos would play Shvarts completing her self-abortions in a bathtub.

Shvarts said she obtained the human elements of her project by artificially inseminating herself multiple times over the course of nine months and then ingesting abortion drugs.

These episodes put abortion advocates in a terrible position....

Questions About Conception on PA Primary Day

This Pennsylvania Primary Day, political science Professor Paul Kengor points to a larger question that both abortion-friendly Democratic presidential hopefuls consistently avoid answering.

In "Conceiving Conception at Messiah," Kengor writes of Hillary Clinton's and Barack Obama's evasive responses to the question of when human life begins during the candidates' "Compassion Forum" at Messiah College on April 13. (Kengor's commentary was posted on Grove City College's The Center for Vision and Values website and published in Philadelphia's The Bulletin today.)

As Kengor noted, Clinton stated that "the potential for life begins at conception," then added:

But for me, it is also not only about a potential life.... And, therefore, I have concluded, after great, you know, concern and searching my own mind and heart over many years, that our task should be, in this pluralistic, diverse life of ours in this nation, that individuals must be entrusted to make this profound decision.... I think abortion should remain legal.

"Even more ambiguous," wrote Kengor, was Obama's response:
This is something that I have not, I think, come to a firm resolution on. I think it's very hard to know what that means, when life begins. Is it when a cell separates? Is it when the soul stirs? So, I don't presume to know the answer to that question. What I know, as I've said before, is that there is something extraordinarily powerful about potential life and that has a moral weight to it that we take into consideration when we're having these debates.

I hear an echo. Clinton's and Obama's evasiveness in answering a critical question concerning abortion reminds me of another abortion-friendly voice that I noted in my book Abortion: A Mother's Plea for Maternity and the Unborn (Liguori Publications).

"We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins." wrote Justice Harry Blackmun in his Opinion of the Court on the Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion across the nation in 1973.

Fertilization of human eggEight week unborn babyNewborn infant

There's only one word to describe the mindset that would dare to legalize abortion, or defend the right to abortion, without answering "the difficult question of when life begins."

Audacity!

God help us if such audacity keeps passing for leadership.

Choose Life at Yale Responds to 'Abortion Art'

"Horrified" is how Choose Life at Yale's Margaret Blume describes the general reaction of her peers towards Aliza Shvarts' senior art project, one in which the art major supposedly impregnated and induced abortions on herself over the past year.

"Almost every student whom I encountered yesterday was horrified at the thought that Aliza Shvarts had repeatedly impregnated herself, only to induce miscarriages, and glory in her 'freedom' to do so. It was deeply reassuring to me that most of my friends and fellow classmates, regardless of their political views on abortion, shared my outrage for such an awful and unnatural experiment. There is still some common level of morality or decency that most people instinctively acknowledge."

Blume expressed dismay at the support Svarts has received from some students, the university's administration, and the Women's center. 'The Women's Center starkly expresses the absolute nature of this right: "Whether it is a question of reproductive rights or of artistic expression, Aliza Shvarts' body is an instrument over which she should be free to exercise full discretion." '

After the story exploded on the internet, Yale Officials denied that Svarts' story was true. Helaine Klasky, Vice President of public affairs at Yale, called the entire project 'creative fiction'. In a story that ran in Friday's Yale Daily News, Svarts maintained that she did impregnate and induce abortions on herself several times over the past year.

When asked if this project was a hoax, Blume stated "There are many ambiguities surrounding the true nature of Aliza Shvarts' project...According to Aliza, 'an intentional ambiguity pervades both the act and the objects I produced in relation to it.' Her whole point is that there is no objective meaning in any act, and specifically, in a woman's body. Yet how can whether or not a life was created and killed be a matter of ambiguity!"

Blume gave Choose Life at Yale's official response to the controversy

"We believe that Yale students, regardless of their views of abortion, were deeply disturbed by this trivialization of the agony of women who face crisis pregnancies and endure miscarriages. This episode offends every thinking person who grapples with the deeply polarizing moral issue of abortion. Most profoundly, it is a depraved but telling reflection of the disrespect for life that abortion has inevitably led to. Though this unfortunate matter may attract wide and unflattering attention to Yale, we hope, at the very least, it will also generate a thoughtful dialogue about the value of human life, and the fact that Aliza's project is only one logical and legal conclusion of the pro-choice position. Also, we are planning to hold a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, April 23rd, from 9-11 pm on Yale's cross campus."

Whether Svarts intended it or not, the controversy brought the abortion debate to the fore front at Yale and across the nation.

"The project has certainly made the abortion debate a salient issue on campus. We are planning to issue a joint statement with the Reproductive Rights Action League at Yale (RALY) expressing our disgust at such a trivialization of the issue, and of the painful experiences of all those who have had an abortion. We can only hope that the debate will force people to think intelligently about abortion, and question why they are so outraged if the fetus is not a human life."

"Since the project has aroused anger and disgust, we hope that it will cause people to reevaluate their views in light of the fact that Aliza's project was legal, and that such a grotesque disregard for life is only the logical conclusion of a woman's absolute right to do whatever she wants with her body."

Blume agreed that Yale should not allow the project to be exhibited, even if it was a hoax.

"Even if the project was some sort of hoax, we completely agree with the Students for Life of America. We are "appalled that Yale University would allow a student to use the tragedy of miscarriage and abortion as a practical joke and then call it 'art.' If a male art student would have released that he planned to exhibit condoms he used to rape multiple women in an effort to produce shock, the American people and pro-choice feminist groups across the country would have demanded that the student apologize for his grotesque behavior and be severely reprimanded or expelled from school. In fact, I doubt that Yale senior project professor would have even allowed the project to continue in the first place. Falsely announcing that one has taken several lives is unethical, and this girl has inflicted serious harm to the women of this country who have experienced the pain of miscarriage." If she actually did try to impregnate herself, which we think is very possible, then we will certainly protest such a flagrant glorification of what is essentially murder. "

Shocking Abortion Art Project Rocks Yale

Is this an example of the "choice" that Sens. Clinton and Obama support?

By Ruben Obregon

The Daily Yale has a story about art major Aliza Shvarts, who reportedly impregnated herself multiple times and induced abortions on herself for the sake of her senior project.

According to the Daily Yale, the goal of the project was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body.

"I believe strongly that art should be a medium for politics and ideologies, not just a commodity," Shvarts said. "I think that I'm creating a project that lives up to the standard of what art is supposed to be."

So creating babies with the intention of killing them meets the standards of what art is supposed to be?

To me, this project meets the standard of what insanity is supposed to be.

The insanity doesn't stop with Shvarts - fellow art major Juan Castillo praised this art project from hell:

"I really loved the idea of this project, but a lot other people didn't," Castillo said. "I think that most people were very resistant to thinking about what the project was really about. [The senior-art-project forum] stopped being a conversation on the work itself."

The Reproductive Rights Action League of Yale (RAYL) has no official opinion about the project - which in itself is a position of silent approval. RAYL can't condemn the project because it would contradict the idea that a woman's choice to have an abortion should never be interfered with - a position that is contrary to the very purpose of the group.

Shvarts may have intended to spark debate about art and the body, but instead it has sparked debate about what "choice" really means.

I'll add to Fr. Pavone's "Is this what you mean" campaign with a similar challenge to "pro-choice" politicians:

Is this what you mean when you say you support a woman's right to choose?

Bringing New Meaning to Creativity?

At least two great minds suggest that the news of a Yale University student, whose art exhibit will feature her self-induced abortions after artificial inseminations, is questionable.

"Please let this be a hoax," begins bioethics expert Wesley Smith's post, "Abortion as 'Art,'" today on Secondhand Smoke.

On Best of the Web Today, The Wall Street Journal's James Taranto wrote, "The Yale Daily News reports today on what can only be described as a sick joke." under a heading "Blood and Ivy."

Ivy

Here's a bit of the Yale Daily News' story, "For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse," about art major Aliza Shvarts' self-expression:
The display of Schvarts' project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts' self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.

Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathroom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.

The project speaks for itself.

Here's hoping that Smith and Taranto are on to something about Schvarts' twisted creativity for her sake and ours.

"I Must Have a Male Child." -- Sex Selection Abortions Continue in "Modern" India.

..."There's more money here now, and more education. But it's still in the back of everyone's mind: 'I must have a male child,'" said Madhur Gurhan, the obstetrician who runs the public hospital's maternity ward in Morena, the largest nearby city. "The money doesn't change that."

It has long been clear that India has a deep-seated preference for boys. By 2001, researchers estimated the country had anywhere from 20 million to 40 million "missing" girls from sex-selective abortions made available through the spread of ultrasound technology.

But as India modernizes -- as places like Singhpura become small towns, as towns become cities and as India's once-overwhelming poverty is slowly supplanted by an increasingly educated middle class that wants fewer children -- researchers say the problem is only getting worse...

New Stanek WND column, "Barack Obama and the sex life of 12 year olds"

WND%20logo.gif

I'm not naïve. I know there are 12-year-olds in the world having sex. But it's not normal behavior. A 6th-grader seeking sex lives in a dysfunctional home. More likely she is being raped by an adult perpetrator. That's not what I say. That's what Planned Parenthood and Guttmacher Institute say:
The younger the mother, the greater the partner age gap.... Fathers are on average 9.8 years older than mothers 11 to 12 years of age.

I have never known or heard of a father, diligent or absentee, liberal or conservative, who pondered aloud that his 9-year-old daughter in three short years might have unprotected consensual sex, so we must make contraceptives and abortion available to her.

Such a father would be creepy, close to a pedophilia promoter.

Such a father would be Barack Obama, who indicated such at Sunday's Compassion Forum....

Abortion Drug Used to Spike Drink

It's happened again, a chemical abortifacient dropped into a young girl's drink. In this case, the abortifacient was one designed for animals. Police in Blair County, Pennsylvania are still looking for the culprit and are treating the case as an act of aggravated assault upon the girl and her unborn baby.

For the record -- chemical abortifacients are sold by the thousands to American teenagers every day by Planned Parenthood. This, despite the fact that a substantial percentage of these girls do not know these drugs will abort a preborn child if he or she has already been conceived.

However, in these cases, police in Blair County, Pennsylvania (or anywhere else, for that matter) are not pursuing the culprits.

Policeman Had a Point About Truth Truck

The police sergeant, who was put on paid leave for threatening to arrest the driver of Operation Rescue's "Truth Truck," had a point.

Operation Rescue's Truth Truck

The Olathe, Kan., officer found the graphic images of aborted babies on the truck to be obscene, as The Kansas City Star reports here, and the local NBC News affiliate reports here (with an interesting photo choice, an ultrasound image of an unborn baby).

Sgt. David Haldeman is correct. The images are disgusting and repulsive. The legality of the procedure that produced the tiny bodies and petite body parts in the pictures is equally obscene.

Violating the right to free speech, as Haldeman did in threatening driver David Brock, is not legal. Fortunately, Olathe's police chief addressed the misunderstanding in a most cordial manner, as Operation Rescue reports here.

New Stanek WND column, "Expelled from 'Expelled'"

WND%20logo.gif

On April 18, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, will boast the largest U.S. opening of any documentary film ever.

Scheduled for release in 1,000 theatres, Expelled will be hotter than Farenheit 9/11, which debuted on 868 screens, and much more convenient to see than An Inconvenient Truth, which I was surprised to find opened on only four screens nationwide despite all the hype, peaking at 587 before
its appeal melted....

Liberals have been going ape about Expelled for months as it has been
screened around the country....

"This is not a scientific battle; this is a worldview battle," Expelled producer Mark Mathis told me.

Mathis has encountered unbridled hostility from the scientific establishment, i.e., avowed Darwinists, at reviews.....

Expelled connects atheism and Darwinism with no missing link, one of the film's two major flashpoints....

"What's driving it is Darwinism is a foundational principle - scientific validation of secularism, atheism, liberalism - and that it strikes at the core of who they are," said Mathis....

expelled 4.jpg

Not only is Darwinism foundational to atheism, it is foundational to eugenics, the other
reason for the left's apoplexy against Expelled, according to Mathis. They
cannot tolerate the connection Expelled draws between Darwinism and Adolf Hitler.

Or Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood.

"Planned Parenthood is a direct outgrowth of Darwinism," said Mathis....

Pro-life persuasion - A Synopsis

The main focus of all discussions should be "What is the unborn?" Pro-choicers often will skirt around that issue with several different reasons for abortion. They will often say: It's my choice. The birth will interfere with school or work. It's just a blob of tissue or clump of cells. The child will be disabled. The mother is a drug addict. The baby will be born in an abusive environment or in poverty. The woman was raped. The health of the mother is in danger.

The premise behind almost all reasons for abortion is that the baby is not a human or that it doesn't have the value that a born person has. There are two ways of handling most arguments. The first is the SLED test. The letters in SLED stand for Size, Level of Development, Environment, and Degree of Dependency.

Arizona Right to Life Condemns Napolitano Vetoes of Abortion Bills

"Today, April 4, 2008, a day where we recall the life and death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Janet Napolitano marked the day by vetoing two bills passed by the Arizona Legislature with the overwhelming support of the people of Arizona. One bill was designed to insure that the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion would not happen in this state and the other was designed to provide additional protection to parents' rights when a minor child seeks an abortion."

So spoke John Jakubczyk in response to the news that the Arizona Governor had vetoed these two bills.

"Napolitano is an abortion extremist who has vetoed every reasonable effort by the legislature to protect the lives and health of women in Arizona. The Governor's response to this legislation shows that she doesn't even partially care about the partially born children for whom this law was designed to protect. "

Dear Daddy Obama a Daddy Dearest on Abortion

This post comes with no intention to intrude upon or disrespect Barack Obama's private relationship with his children. No doubt, the Democratic presidential hopeful loves his little girls.

I address only Obama's public relationship with the issue of abortion, as Ben Smith's Blog on Politico.com reports here.

When a woman at an Obama gathering in Johnstown, Pa., pleaded with him to "stop these abortions," his response included:

"This is a very difficult issue, and I understand sort of the passions on both sides of the issue," he said. "I have two precious daughters -- they are miracles [my emphasis in bold letters]."

and

"Look, I got two daughters -- 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information [my emphasis in bold letters]. "

Is Planned Parenthood a wise investment for America - sign petition, please!

Dear Barbara,

While most companies have started to feel the squeeze of our sagging economy, business has never been better for Planned Parenthood. Although the organization couldn't be more controversial, its profits have never been higher, according to the group's 2006-07 annual report. For the first time in history, Planned Parenthood has surpassed the $1 billion mark in annual income, a milestone made possible by $336 million of your tax dollars.

Despite the rash of bad publicity, Planned Parenthood received a $31.4 million pay raise in taxpayer funds--a 10.8 percent increase in the "nonprofit's" government revenue. Adding to the windfall, Planned Parenthood's clinics worked overtime for an extra 24,707 abortions in 2006, six times the number of casualties from the entire Iraq war. All together, its abortion mills put 289,650 unborn babies to death in the year 2006 alone. This is an increase of more than 20,000 aborted babies from the year before. All from an organization whose supporters say they want to make abortion rare?

Planned Parenthood also makes a tidy sum sowing its wild oats in the next generation of abortion customers. The group sold more than 1,400,000 "emergency" contraception kits, in many instances making transactions without as much as a medical exam.

While the public is increasingly skeptical of Planned Parenthood's operation, it has yet to put a dent in the organization's bottom line. For that, we need your help. The majority of Americans wouldn't invest in a company that conspires in sexual crimes against children, accepts racially-motivated donations, promotes pornography to kids, devotes millions to the election of pro-abortion politicians, and uses unsanitary equipment to treat patients. Unfortunately, through Medicaid and Title X, the federal government is forcing taxpayers to do just that.

Please sign this petition to President Bush, which FRC will deliver to the White House, asking him to approve new Title X regulations that will ensure no federal money goes to subsidize the abortion facilities of groups like Planned Parenthood. Ask the President also to ensure that legitimate clinics are not forced to refer for abortions. When you are done signing this petition, please forward it to all your friends.

Planned Parenthood "disappointed" - parental notification

Love being on Planned Parenthood's email list. When they're "disappointed" it's always a happier day for me!

Take Action for Reproductive Rights

Dear Barbara,

We are disappointed to inform you that yesterday, Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office took action (again!) to lift the injunction on Illinois' 1995 Parental Notification law.

Earlier this month, we reported on U.S. District Court Judge David Coar's ruling that the 1995 Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act is unconstitutional and therefore cannot be enforced.

We celebrated this ruling as a victory for the most vulnerable young women in our state. While most young women do involve their parents in the decision of whether to terminate a pregnancy, some - those in abusive or neglectful situations - face dangerous repercussions or could be denied critical health care if the 1995 Parental Notification Law goes into effect.

We've included a timeline on this issue's journey through the courts below. Please stay tuned. We'll send further updates as we get them.

Thank you.

In a day and age where schools cannot dispense a Tylenol to a kid with a headache - and where a girl under 18 needs parental consent to get her ears pierced - doesn't it seem just a little weird that we are supposed to support a teen girl's "privacy" when it comes to a non-regulated provider actually invading her body with a procedure which can end up causing hemorrhage and death?

When it comes to Planned Parenthood, you have to remember that they are not in this for the love of women, but for the gigantic profits - including, inexplicably, government funds - from their abortion centers. Planned Parenthood or Planned Barenhood? Just follow the money.

Happy Birthday, Jonny - Sweet 16!

Sixteen years ago today something happened that changed my life forever. My son Jonny was born. Within five minutes, I knew he had Down syndrome. He was our eighth child, and I guess God had prepared my heart for this Great Adventure. That's the only way I can explain the feeling of basking in God's love and goodness - I knew this would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

And it has been!

Tripp sent this to everyone in our family this morning:

Dear Family,

Today is a "day of days" in our family...Every one of you is special in God's Eyes and in my heart, but I believewe were all transformed in one way or another by Our God when he sent us Jonathan. I praise Our Heavenly Father for His goodness and thank my wife for being Jonny's
Mother and Advocate.

Love to you all!
RoboPop

Along with a bunch of pictures - which I can share with you too:

Since Jonny was a baby, this has been my song for him:

And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It might be quite simple
But now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world.

Happy Birthday, dear Jonny!

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey's Pro-Political-Opportunism

April 22nd, Pennsylvania's primary day, cannot come soon enough.

The Democratic presidential wannabes, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, are everywhere in my home state.

My case of BarackHillary fatigue is so severe that I completely ignored last weeks news about U.S. Sen Bob Casey, Jr., (D-Pa.) endorsing Obama. Then I read Tim Graham's post "Pro-Obama and 'Staunchly Anti-Abortion'?" on National Review Online's Media Blog about the Washington Post's "The Obama-Casey State Tour" story and my primary weariness turned to disgust.

Graham points to this contradiction in Post political reporter Shailagh Murray's story:

The camaraderie between Casey and Obama is not surprising. They are about the same age, they both have daughters, and they represent a new generation of lawmakers in Washington who are less ideologically rigid than their forebears.

Like his father, Casey is staunchly antiabortion.

NRO's blogger points to the odd choice of "staunchly antiabortion" to describe a pol who seems giddy after endorsing the most extreme abortion rights presidential hopeful, Obama. Graham also questions Casey's pro-life consistency, which I've done before.
