One of my former journalism teachers loved competitive sports, he said. For that reason, he was drawn to writing about politics with its thrills of winning and agonies of defeat.
With that in mind, I decided to check the scores -- NARAL Pro-Choice America's scores -- on our presidential hopefuls' voting records on issues of life like abortion. Since the three White House wannabes all served as U.S. senators, NARAL's Congressional Record on Choice seemed like a good place to look.
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., were tied in 2007. Each scored a 100 percent approval rating from NARAL for their abortion rights voting records.
No surprises there.
This year Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., merited a special page on NARAL's website because of his "solidly antichoice record."
There, NARAL informs readers that McCain's support of abortion rights in 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002 was "0 percent." Not only that, "Because only one choice-related vote was taken in 2001 -- to confirm John Ashcroft as United States Attorney General -- no numerical score was given for the year. Sen. McCain voted anti-choice."
