The list of conservatives that are publicly vowing to never, ever vote for John McCain is impressive. It includes Anne Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and now James Dobson. But, beloved though these conservative fighters are by folks like me, they are forgetting how "clear and present danger" a Democrat President will be on the priority issue of abortion.
Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have pledged to consider only devoted pro-abortionists for Supreme Court vacancies. That's a given. And with at least two vacancies coming up in the next presidential term being almost a certainty, a Democrat victory would protect Roe for another two generations and further solidify its already tenacious hold on American culture.
Mike Huckabee, commenting on the anti-McCain conservatives in an interview yesterday with CNN, said, "They're not conservative. If they say that, then that just proves something: They're more about themselves than they are the cause, because there's no way that a true conservative would vote for Hillary Clinton."
I part company with Governor Huckabee on a few issues...but not that one. As the one viable Republican candidate who has really proven his worth as a pro-lifer (in speeches, media interviews and, most important, in practice), Huckabee understands the centrality of the sacredness of life among the other political concerns. So do Senators Sam Brownback, Tom Coburn, John Kyl, John Thune, and many other dedicated pro-life political leaders who are endorsing John McCain for President.
Me? I'm still holding out hope for a brokered convention where one of the above fellows could scoop up the nomination; announce Sarah Palin as his choice for Vice-President; Chris Smith as the Secretary of State; Jack Kemp as Secretary of the Treasury; and...well, you get the idea.
But, if that dream doesn't play out and I have to live in the real world, one where John McCain is the person standing when the balloons are released; then my commitment as a Christian pro-life activist requires my most fervent prayers and efforts to defeat at the polls next November the person representing the most immediate and comprehensive danger to the cause of life.
And that person will be the head of the Democrat ticket.
So, c'mon, Ann and Rush and Sean and Dr. Dobson. Let's feel free to criticize John McCain for his blunders (and, yes, they are many) and let's do what we can to require him to fill his cabinet with more consistent conservatives. But, goodness gracious, let's not help win the Oval Office, the State Department and the all-important Supreme Court for those who will not only deny all restrictions and regulations of abortion here at home but will promote it as "health services and population control" around the world.

I completely agree. Dobson and Limbaugh are way out of line here. Limbaugh I understand, but Dobson is a real disappointment. I generally feel betrayed by all of the evangelical leadership who refused to back either Brownback or Huckabee.
I agree. I'm no McCain fan but some of these folks just sound irrational - almost like they thought their hyperbole would help their candidates. It wasn't like Romney was a sure-thing as a conservative.
Just saw this great quote by Greg Koukl: A second-class fireman is better than a first class arsonist.
Since McCain is endorsed by Republicans for Choice,
I doubt the rebellion has gone too far.
It has just begun!
I'm a Huckabee backer, and have been since last August. I'm not giving up on my guy, mostly because he is the pro-life candidate.
Having said that ... if my guy doesn't pull out the win, I'm going to deal with reality and vote for the pro-life candidate over the pro-abort every time.
McCain is pro life only as long as he needs to sucker your vote. Remember that Alito was too conservative a choice for him.
McCain is responsible for an act just about as reprehensible as Roe v. Wade, namely, McCain-Feingold. I have no guilty conscience about not voting for him.
We can't be shortsighted about this; we need now to look to 2012 and pray for a new Reagan to rise up and let McCain and the GOP inside-the-Beltway establishment know that they're not the solution; they're the problem for us conservatives.
At least we KNOW where Clinton and Obama stand.
jesus will lead us and show us the right person to put into the white house, i pray everyday for the lords direction, and I am a huckabee fan
JESUS is so the answer on this election, I pray everyday that the Lord will show us who will be in the whitehouse, I am a Huckabee fan.
Let Huckabee and McCain fight it out in the primaries. I'm fine with either one. But McCain IS ABSOLUTELY Pro-Life! And I believe he has the best chance of beating Hillary or Obama in a head to head Presidential race. And most at stake is NOMINATIONS TO THE SUPREME COURT! I trust McCain to get the job done, and to do it well. We have Roberts and Alito and other conservative federal judges thanks in part to McCain's help!!!
Think about it.
Mitch - Keep your eye on the ball. You're complaining about what he might have said about Alito, but McCain also said that he would appoint justices like Scalia or Thomas. I happen to be okay with that. We could use more Scalia and Thomas types, even if we don't get an Alito.
By the way ... he voted to confirm Alito, if I'm not mistaken.
All of us who visit this site realize that our efforts are to save the children and end the bloodshed. We all know the stories of women victimized by the abortion profiteers. A pro-abortion Democrat in the White House will only make our work more difficult and the probability that more children will die.
McCain has been a strong and consistent pro-life advocate. That is not to say that he has not erred in some of his votes. That is not to say that we strongly differed on Campaign finance reform. But overall he has voted pro-life during his 24 years in the House and Senate. I have no reason to believe that he would not be a strong pro-life president. He wants to cut the waste in government. He can start by de-funding planned parenthood.
As it would appear that he will win the nomination, we must convince the activists in the movement that the stakes are to high to sit this one out. As i heard the other day in a sermon, "Just consider this thought, will you be able to explain your actions (voting, etc) to the millions of unborn souls whose lives were lost because of your inaction?"
Prayer - then action . Then more prayer.
