This morning I came across the commentary Abstinence and Contraceptives Don't Mix Well in the Daily Campus, the largest daily college newspaper in Connecticut.
Here are some excerpts from the commentary:
"Acknowledging the validity of abstinence as a healthy choice while contending that it can be unhealthy to repress one's sexual urges is an apparent contradiction. How can self-restraint be healthy and unhealthy at the same time?""Calling abstinence until marriage 'ideal,' as members of Tuesday's panel repeatedly did while admitting that you don't expect young people to choose it is pointless. Why mention abstinence if you're going to insinuate that it's practically impossible to practice? Someone who sings the praises of "choice" but implies that young people are incapable of choosing to master their sexual urge clearly has very little faith in their ability to choose."
"An argument for contraception is essentially an argument against self-restraint and for consensual objectification. The contraceptive attitude says, 'Let me use you, and I'll let you use me.'"
The anti-contraception message is becoming move visible across the nation on college campuses, and commentaries and articles in campus publications are becoming more common.
Activism on campus is growing as well, with groups like Project Plus leading the way. This past Valentines day on the campus of University of Mary Washington, members from this group distributed Hershey's chocolate bars with an anti-contraception message.
The full size bars were wrapped in a custom wrapper containing two messages about contraception. On the outside, the wrapper had the message "True Love is worth more than Contraception", and on the inside it read "It makes sense that condoms are handed out today with nothing more than a tiny chocolate kiss. This reflects how little love you can express while using one. Using contraception tells your lover, 'I don't want to share every part of myself with you.'"
In the coming years the debate will certainly heat up on the college campus as the movement continues to grow.
