This past Monday at the blogs for life conference, I had an opportunity to speak with both Senator Sam Brownback and Representative Duncan Hunter about the harms of contraception. Now before you pro-contraception bloggers get happy and start ranting on how these candidates are going to take away your condoms, the focus was not on banning contraception. And yes, I'm going to try and speak with Democratic and independent candidates on this issue as well.
I felt it was important to address the harms of contraception, the definition of conception, and so forth with these elected officials, one of which may be the President of the United States one day. You can bet the left will try to sell them on the "benefits" of contraception, so it shouldn't be a surprise that I inform them of the harms of contraception.
When I greeted them, I handed these elected officials a "Birth Control is Harmful" card and reviewed some of the points with them. These cards list about a dozen quick facts on the harms of contraception, including how contraception has historically failed to reduce abortion, increased the rate of pre-marital sex among teens, and has been responsible for the deaths of an untold number of women.. The cards also point out that it has been abstinence which has been the primary cause in the reduction of abortion.
I also gave the cards to reporters who attended the conference, and apparently Dana Milbank, a Washington Post columnist, blames the cards for some alleged discomfort on the part of Representative Hunter.
Another participant distributed cards saying "Birth Control Is Harmful." ... That may have accounted for Hunter's discomfort. He was scheduled to speak at 11 but entered at 9:35 and was quickly invited to the microphone.
However, I didn't give Representative Hunter the "Birth Control Is Harmful" card until after he spoke to the bloggers. And at that point I had only distributed cards to the media and the Representative. But this isn't the first time that Milbank has his facts mixed up either. (Maybe these cards actually gave Milbank some discomfort…)
The harms of contraception are not a partisan issue - I look forward to giving "Birth Control Is Harmful" cards to any candidate from any party. I'd also be glad to discuss the harms of contraception with them as well. I'll just have to wait for my opportunity to speak with Sens. Clinton and Obama as well as other potential Presidential candidates.
I encourage you to do the same -- you can bet your bottom dollar that representatives from the Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood and other pro-contraception entities are going to speak to them on the subject of contraception as well. Are they going to be the only voices heard?
