Kansans for Life today responded to the news that criminal charges were filed against Wichita late-term abortionist George Tiller:
It is no surprise to those of us in the pro-life movement that criminal charges were filed against George Tiller. In fact, we think it is 35 years overdue. More unborn children have died at George Tiller's abortion clinic in Wichita, than all of the Americans who were killed in the Vietnam War and the Iraqi War combined.(1)George Tiller has aborted babies that could live outside the womb for decades. He continued to do so even after the Kansas law changed in 1998, making it illegal to perform a late-term abortion unless it would prevent "permanent and irreversible injury to a major bodily function" --an extremely rare circumstance. If we are to believe the state statistics, however, such situations occurred 414 times in 2005. (2)
Many women are injured by abortion and there is at least one abortion death in 2005. Christin Gilbert died after a late-term abortion at George Tiller's clinic. (3) Hundreds of other women are suffering from their abortion experience. (4)
His "business" is offensive to most Kansans. Women are kept in local motels while the abortion procedure continues and during recovery. Tiller has a "baptism" ceremony for late-term abortions so that the mothers can have the opportunity to "say goodbye to their baby" and hold their baby after the abortion. Occasionally, one can see the smoke rising from Tiller's onsite incinerator as late-term babies are consumed by the fire.(5)The over 60,000 abortions that have been performed at Tiller's abortion clinic have made this a very profitable business. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been given by George Tiller to politicians that support abortion and who are working to protect George Tiller's killing business. (6)
Phill Kline has been the only state Attorney general in recent memory who did not benefit from Tiller or Tiller's ProKanDo political action committee donations.
Kansans for Life, and all sound citizens, support the efforts of any and all law enforcement agencies to enforce Kansas laws with judge-approved evidence-- no matter what the issue, without regard to political correctness, political money or fear of controversy.
Mary Kay Culp, State Executive Director, Kansans for Life, commented.
Tiller and his lawyers can scream and curse and call law enforcement officials all the names they want, but if he has broken duly passed Kansas laws, he deserves to be brought to justice. And women, whose minds, souls, subsequent pregnancies and bodily health is affected by abortion, especially late-term abortion, deserve that justice. They deserve our love, and help that addresses the wholeness of their humanity, rather than an abortionist who has for years avoided legal scrutiny by financially investing in the political campaigns of his chosen candidates, and working against those like Phill Kline who refuse to be influenced.References:1) Tiller has remarked that he performed over 2,000 abortions per year. Tiller began his abortion career assisting his father doing back-alley illegal abortion in the early 1970's. Vietnam > 58,000 deaths, Iraq> 2,000 deaths Tiller=2,000 to 3,000 a year x 30 +years = 60,000 to 90,000 deaths

According to over 8 years of testimony in Congress concerning health "exceptions" possibly needed for women in late term pregnancy, the medical opinions concurred that such women needed hospital stabilization and bedrest-not 3 day invasive surgical abortions.
3) 7 ambulance runs from Tiller's clinic to Wichita hospitals have been reported by sidewalk counselors in the past two years. There is no official reporting of injury or death of women from abortions in Kansas. Governor Sebelius vetoed a bill clarifying late term reporting in 2006, and vetoed abortion clinic licensing bills in 2003 and 2005
4) Fox news' Bill O'Reilly recently showcased "Kelli", who testified on camera as to the dire personal consequences following her abortion at age 14 from Tiller.
