A Horrific Story about Late Term Abortion

kelly_oreilly.jpgLast night I watched part of the Fox News show "The O'Reilly Factor", it was a sobering if not heart wrenching segment concerning that late term abortion given to a juvenile by Wichita’s notorious abortionist, George Tiller. Identified only as "Kelly", the woman related how, at age 14, she was taken by her parents from Maryland to Kansas and given an abortion in the 20th week of pregnancy. The trip was necessary because the abortion was illegal in her home state.

According to Kelly, the process took five days.

“About the third or fourth day Dr. Tiller came in and injected into the embryonic sack saline solution which suffocated and burned my baby to death,” she explained. Later, she was forced to deliver her dead child into a toilet, an event that traumatized her and led to self-destructive behavior over the next ten years. “I left my baby dead in a toilet,” she recounted.

During the interview the emotional pain was evident on Kelly’s face but she kept her composure and was able to articulate the most traumatic experience of her life. She did so for a purpose. “This all very graphic and I think its important that people know that this is going on in our country,” she explained, later adding, “Nobody said anything … about 10 years down the road what was going to happen.”

Today, Operation Rescue sent out a press release, calling readers to watch the video and join a protest in Witchita, Kansas.

"The pain of Kelly's abortion was still evident in her face. Even O'Reilly seemed deeply affected by her story,” said Operation Rescue president Troy Newman. “Unfortunately, her tragedy is being repeated every week at George Tiller's abortion mill on other vulnerable girls. There are literally thousands of Kelly's out there, each with her own horrific story to tell,"

The press release adds the following:

Tiller is currently under criminal investigation by the Kansas Attorney General's office for illegal late-term abortions and the concealment of child rape. He narrowly escaped indictments by a grand jury earlier this year in the abortion death of 19-year old Christin Gilbert.

"Operation Rescue is calling all men and women of conscience to come to Wichita January 19-22 for an event aptly named 'A Cry For Justice,'" said Newman. "We will continue to focus the eyes of the nation on Tiller's heinous killing practice and demand he be brought to justice. We are drawing a line in the sand. The killing stops here."

I must first begin by saying that my religious beliefs lead me to beleive that abortion is an absolutely horrific thing, and that I value ALL human life. However, there are two main sets of mental rules that we use in our descision making process: morality and religious beleifs (Yes, they are seperate catagories). There is also a third, learnable descision making basis. It does not have a name, but it is imbedded in our Constitution. We cannot ignore this kind of descision making - democrats, republicans, independents, green party, or whatever else you may be. We are forced to obey the law, but in order to be a good citizen, we must vote in the best interests of other citizens as well. (Sound familiar? This can probably be found in the Bible and Torah. "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.") The framers of the Constitution understood this well. The first ten words of the Bill of Rights tell us that we cannot impose our religious or moral beleifs on other people, specifically with legislation. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." (Amendment I - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791) I don't think this could be much clearer than the framers declaring that they were pro-abortion. Also, if you do not find that this completely covers the subject at hand, the Constitutional Bill of Rights also says that citizens have other rights thatn those outlined in the Constitution. "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." (Amendment IX - Construction of Constitution. Ratified 12/15/1791). I would also like to adress the fact that by banning or making abortion legal, you will destroy far more lives than you would save. Right now, as it is, every time someone has an abortion one person dies. Sometimes that person scientifically wasn't event alive to begin with, and other times the person was a "crack baby" or a child that would have been beaten as it grew older. Other times the mother would have died, but was already a single mother. If you create a law banning abortion the women who do not want their babies for one reason or another would kill the baby, and possibly themselves as well, in a backalley, or a bathroom, or any other place they could find. If they did follow the law, they may die in labor. Other mothers-to-be would become overwhealmed with stress and take up habbits potentially lethal to the baby (i.e. smoking, drinking, illegal drugs, halucinagenics) or even commit suicide. So there you have at least 75% more deaths, even if you feel that the mother's life is worth less than the child's. What will be next in this string of absurd imposition; outlawing condoms and spermocide? ("Every sperm is sacred..." Monty Python: The Meaning of Life) I hope and pray that you will be able to overlook your riligious values long enough to see that you cannot force other people to do things with their bodies.

I barely know where to begin in response to your post Friedrich, but I suppose I'll begin with this statement.

Nowhere in the bill of rights is it stated that "women have a right to an abortion" The "right" to abortion is extrapolated from an extrapolated right. It's hardly a "clear" position from our founding fathers.

Aside from this obvious fallacy, it is ludicrous to pretend that our moral values do not influence law. We assert our values on others when we outlaw the killing of any person. I'm sure there are many people who find murder to be morally acceptable, but they are submitted to our moral whims.

How can you personally believe that abortion is tantamount to murder, yet believe that it should be a "woman's choice", It would be ridiculous to say "well I personally believe that rape is wrong, but I don't want to force my beliefs on others so we shouldn't have laws outlawing rape". This is exactly what you're saying by stating that you believe that abortion should remain a legal choice although you consider it murder.

No other situation is handled with the kid gloves of abortion. No other surgery is without physical and emotional risks, and no other ethical issue is so without substance. Pull back the blinders of "choice" and view abortion through the lens of other acts that destroy life. I think you'll be surprised how much "pro-choice" rhetoric has blurred the truth.
