Well, girls - if you're 18 or older you no longer have to get a prescription to pump tons of hormones into your body as a back-up plan for irresponsible sex. Oh wait - Plan B IS (supposedly) the responsible thing to do after having irresponsible sex. Silly me...
According to the Boston Herald, Plan B is now available over-the-counter for use among those who are 18 or older. It's really frightening to think about women using such high doses of hormones willy-nilly without knowing the long-term effects. My suspicion is that any risky side effects of regular oral contraceptives (increased risk of blood clots, stroke, exacerbation of diabetic conditions, not to mention the breast cancer link) are exponentiated by Plan B. Seriously, are they going to regulate the frequency with which women use this potentially toxic drug?? And this says nothing of the other consequences, such as potential abortion if conception has occurred....
