A commonsense bill to require notification of one parent before a minor obtains an out-of-state secret abortion died Friday, September 29. U.S. Senate Democrats, including Michigan's Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Sen. Carl Levin, voted overwhelmingly to block it.
The bill, S. 403, the Child Custody Protection Act, would have prohibited transporting a minor across state lines to obtain a secret abortion if this abridged the parents' right to be notified under the home-state law.
Right to Life of Michigan worked to make Parental Consent in Michigan a reality. Since 1990, the teen abortion rate in Michigan has decreased by 60 percent.
Unfortunately, because Sen. Stabenow chose not to stand up for Michigan families in Washington, D.C., our teens are at risk for crossing Michigan's border for secret abortions.
It is time for a change in Michigan. We deserve a senator who will stand up for Michigan families and vote for commonsense legislation. To learn more, visit www.rtl.org.
