Up to a million Christians in approximately 900 locations worldwide took part in the various Life Chains on 1October, International Life Chain Sunday. About 100 Christians in Cape Town formed a Life Chain to proclaim the Sanctity of Life. The Life Chain in Cape Town took place in Buitengracht Street (near the entrance to the Water Front).
The Life Chain is an international prayer vigil and peaceful placard protest against the abortion holocaust.
Over 600 000 babies have been legally killed through abortion in South Africa, since 1 February 1997.
The Life Chains recognise the abortion holocaust as the one of the greatest recurring crimes being committed in the world today. "Abortion is worse than apartheid," says National Co-ordinator of the Christian Action Network, Taryn Hodgson. “Abortion takes away the most basic right of the most innocent people – the Right to Life of pre-born babies. It is discrimination based on age. It is an urgent priority for the Church to expose, oppose, and end this war against children made in the image of God.”
This year, a special focus of the Life Chain was to urge the Minister of Health to include clauses in the new Abortion Amendment Act that will ensure effective
protection of women through: recording of maternal injuries and deaths from abortion; provision for conscientious objection by medical personnel; mandatory and comprehensive counseling for all mothers considering abortion.
Hodgson believes women are being exploited through the false advertising of abortion clinics who claim that their abortions are "safe and pain free". “Thousands of women are suffering from Post-Abortion Syndrome. Guilt, grief, nightmares, depression and suicidal tendencies plague their lives. In the counseling session prior to the abortion procedure, most women are not told about these after effects, or about their alternatives, such as adoption. At many state clinics and hospitals women do not receive any counseling.”
ACDP Member of Parliament, Cheryllyn Dudley, said at the event, “These laws will only be changed if Christians elect godly men and women to implement Biblical Principles.”
Since 1987 Life Chains have been held in the USA, and since 1992 Africa Christian Action has organised Life Chains in South Africa. This was the 15th Life Chain held in Cape Town. Life Chains were also held in Stanger, Tongaat and Bloemfontein in South Africa.
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Proverbs 31:8
Gifts, such as baby items, for the Moreson Children’s Home were collected at the Life Chain.
