NPLR.NET, the National Pro-Life Radio Network, an Internet based radio network has been launched with financial backing from two private foundations. NPLR features talk shows, commentary programs and a daily news program that reports on developments in the pro-life movement in the US and other countries.
The radio network is the brainchild of Stephen Peroutka, Paul Schenck and Jerry Gietka.
Stephen Peroutka is a Maryland attorney who is well known for his pro-life advocacy. He has been on broadcast radio for years in the Washington, DC mteroplex and recently on XM satellite radio. When Peroutka became chairman of the National Pro-Life Action Center in Washington, he and the center's founder, Paul Chaim Schenck, discussed ways to get the pro-life message to more than radio listeners and restricted markets.
"The people in this country are pro life" says Peroutka, "the problem is that the corporate media, health insurance bean counters and the politicians in their pockets aren't." So, he and Schenck have teamed up with other pro-life leaders to create the new network.
"Its natural and human to be pro-life" says Schenck, a former pastor and now pastoral associate in Priests for Life. "Its unnatural to be pro-death, so what NPLR is doing is giving ordinary people a very big say in how we think about this critical public policy issue."
But the network isn't only singing to the choir. Schenck says that people who disagree are welcome at their website and on the call-in shows. "We invite those who disagree to make their views known. In fact, we consider them an important part of our programming. We look forward to a lively discussion with different points of view. We want everybody to participate."
Among the program hosts and on air personalities are Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, JR. She is the daughter of Rev. A.D. King, Martin's only brother and fellow civil rights leader who was murdered shortly after his brother. Alveda and Schenck work together in Gospel of Life Ministries, the ecumenical component of Priests for Life. The program line up includes Rev. Frank Pavone, Scott Klusendorff, Kimberly Zenarolla, Mark Crutcher, as well as Schenck's twin brother Rev. Rob Schenck from Faith and Action, Paul Schenck and Stephen Peroutka.
The news anchor and features reporter is Day Gardner, founder of the African American Pro Life Alliance and a former Miss Delaware. She was news anchor for Guam Television.
The station's program manager is Rob McQuay, a celebrated Washington performer in theater and television. McQuay was recognized at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for his work in theater where he has acted and directed. He has also appeared on national TV. A parapalegic, he has been chair of the Governor's Council on Disabilities in the Arts.
The Artistic Director is Jerry Gietka, who is an actor, director and producer in Baltimore and regional theater. Gietka is an erstwhile college professor who is host of a Baltimore theater radio show and has directed theater productions.
