On Wednesday afternoon, the Arizona House gave final approval to HB 2666, the bill to require that a parent’s signature authorizing their minor daughter to have an abortion be notarized. That’s all the bill does – require the parent’s signature be notarized just like numerous other medical and school forms that require a notarized parental consent signature. In the Senate and House hearings, a mom and a dad testified that their teenage daughter obtained an abortion on the basis of a fraudulent parental consent – an e-mail sent by the daughter’s boyfriend from a public school computer. Their courage in sharing their personal heartbreak remains one of the most moving testimonies I’ve seen in my ten plus years of working at the Capitol on family issues. Their willingness to step forward so that other parents and daughters don’t have similar experiences is an example for us all. The bill passed the Senate with 18 votes and the House with 39 votes. Now, its fate rests with Gov. Janet Napolitano.
URGENT ACTION NEEDED: Call Gov. Napolitano at (602) 542-4331 or e-mail her at azgov@az.gov. Politely ask her to sign HB 2666 into law. Forward this action alert to others who would make the same phone call. Consider this bill a matter of prayer for the next few days until its fate is resolved.
