As the release of his book approaches, Michel Schiavo and his wife Jodi have given their first network interview with NBC New’s Matt Lauer. Schiavo discusses the hydration/starvation death of his wife, Terri, and why he refused to give her care over to her family, the Schinders:
Schiavo: When you sit in a courtroom and you hear the father say, ‘I’ll cut her arms and lets off just to keep her alive.’ Why would I want ot put their daughter back in their care If he’s going to do that to her?Lauer: Let’s make sure we understand that statement.
Schiavo: (interrupting)
Lauer: I think the statement was basically was, if she were to develop gangrene, and had to have limbs amputated, he would do that and would ok that in order to still have her alive
Schiavo: Right.
Lauer: That’s a little different than what you said.
Ironically, Schiavo’s book is called "Terri: The Truth."
Later in the clip, an emotional Michael Schiavo recounts his last moments with Terri, "I lifted her up in my arms, just like the night it happened. I told her I loved her. Then she died." Yes, he states that he still loved his wife (and was weeping HT: SpiritDaily), similar to the words he spoke during a 1992 malpractice lawsuit (which he won):
Q. How do you feel about being married to Terri now?Yet, the very next year he gave this testimony during a Nov. 19, 1993 deposition:SCHIAVO: I feel wonderful. She's my life and I wouldn't trade her for the world. I believe in my - I believe in my wedding vows.
Q. What do you mean? You want to take a minute?
SCHIAVO: Yeah.Q. If the court would let us take a minute.
Q. You okay?
SCHIAVO: Yeah, I’m sorry.
Q. Have - you said you believe in your wedding vows. What do you mean by that?
SCHIAVO: I believe in the vows that I took with my wife. Through sickness, in health, for richer or poorer. I married my wife because I love her and I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I'm going to do that.
Q. Are you presently – you’re married to Terri Schiavo, correct?And in the spring of 1993, just a few months after this Medical Malpractice was awarded to Terri, Michael Schiavo, Terri’s legal guardian, instructed caregivers not to treat Terri who had acquired a common but life threatening infection. Here's what he said under oath:SCHIAVO: Yes I am.
Q. Are you presently involved in a romantic relationship with anyone?
SCHIAVO: Yes I am.
Q. Are you involved in an intimate relationship with this person.
SCHIAVO: Yes I am.
Q. Is this the first relationship that you’ve been involved in since your wife has been in a coma?
SCHIAVO: No.
Q. What was her bladder condition?
Michael Schiavo: She had a UTI.Q. What is that?
Michael Schiavo: Urinary tract infection.Q. What did the doctor tell you treatment for that would be?
Michael Schiavo: Antibiotic usually.Q. And did he tell you what would occur if you failed to treat that
infection? What did he tell you?
Michael Schiavo: That sometimes urinary tract infection will turn to sepsis.Q. And sepsis is what?
Michael Schiavo: An infection throughout the body.Q. And what would the result of untreated sepsis be to the patient?
Michael Schiavo: The patient would pass on.
Perhaps we will hear Michael address these as well during the upcoming interview although I doubt it.
