Ideology, not science, governs the APA's support for abortion:
According to a spokesperson for the American Psychological Association, the APA's pro-choice position, first adopted in 1969, is based on a civil rights view, not on scientific proof of any mental health benefits arising from abortion.Read LifeSiteNews' special report

So are they a political group or are they health professionals? Even if they, unfortunately, have a political belief in abortion rights, wouldn't they still want to make a statement regarding the negative psychological effects of abortion (since they are in the mental health business)?
I mean, the American Dental Association probably supports a person's legal right to choose to eat candy for every meal, but they still go to great effort to warn us that even if it's legal, it's still bad for us.
A focus on health should be their primary concern. Politics, if it has any place at all, should be farther down the list.
When the APA adopts a position, they are using their reputation as experts in their field, apparently weighing in on the basis of their scientific research. Their position, according to the article, apparently runs contrary to research in their own field.
Here's another news flash for ya, the APA doesn't use science to tell the truth about homosexuality either. :)
