In debates involving abortion, embryonic stem cell research and euthanasia, euphemism are often used to make the act of killing sound more palatable and, in some cases, even desirable. The logical fallacy involved in these language gymnastics is Argument By Emotive Language, using emotionally loaded words to sway the audience's sentiments instead of their minds.
Wesley Smith comments that the phrase "early stem cells" is being used instead of "embryonic stem cells" and "therapeutic cloning" is replaced by its technical term, "somatic cell nuclear transfer." There is more:
... now euthanasia societies no longer use the word euthanasia. It is all "compassion and choices" or "choice in dying." The acts of killing are now called "aid in dying," or "death with dignity." It all gets increasingly ridiculous.Related: EVASIVE LANGUAGE RESULTS IN SUBOTIMAL OUTCOMES - Individual congressmen are enriching the language. Sen. Charles Schumer contributed "deeply held beliefs," a reference to his fear that a Catholic on the Supreme Court might vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.
