Life & Liberty Ministries’ Truth Truck arrived in Detroit on Friday, February 3rd, two days prior to Super Bowl Sunday. The organization was met with immediate opposition from the Detroit Police Department, including the arrest and incarceration of the organization's director, Dennis Green.
According an LLM press release, on Feb. 3rd, Green was issued a ticket for not having a vehicle registration, despite his claim that the ticketing officer and a police supervisor were given a valid registration.
The following day, LLM’s Truth Truck was pulled over by several City police cars and Green was told that he could not drive in the downtown area. LLM representatives claim the officers were asked what ordinance was being violated and further allege that the officers berated Green for his pro-life message and impounded the truck.
After the vehicle was towed, Green was issued a ticket for "Violation of temporary signage in the entertainment zone — Failure to obtain permit" and taken into police custody. LLM representatives state,
This was of course a ridiculous charge but it was the method used to remove the message from the street until after the Super Bowl.In his organization's press release, Green describes a conversation between two officers as they consider the appropriate course of action:
Before towing the truck away, Mr. Green heard the police debating what was to be done with the truck. Two officers were talking about cutting the signs form the truck and the officer in charge was heard saying that he could not just issue a ticket because he believed it would not stop the truck from being driven. He said that the situation must be "dealt with by towing the vehicle away and holding it as evidence."Press reports leading up the Green's arrest indicate that the Detroit was attempting to "undergo a Super Bowl makeover", hoping to use one of the world's most polished sporting events to "rub decades of grime off the city's tarnished reputation."
Green has been released on bond and is due to appear in District Court on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
