It has been less than 10 months after Terri's barbaric death by "starvation and dehydration over 13 grueling days with the whole world watching."
During Terri's struggle for life, the Diocese of St. Petersburg did little if nothing and now her husband, Michael Schiavo, has been re-married by the Roman Catholic Church of Espiritu Santo, Florida.
It was the ultimate slap in the face to Terri Schiavo's parents. While they were spending years in a heart-wrenching battle to save their daughter's life, her estranged husband was having an affair with a woman and eventually had two children with her. The couple got married on Saturday.
Terri Schiavo’s sister Suzanne Vitadamo spoke out against the Catholic bishops of Florida, saying Terri may not have been killed if the bishops would have supported the fight to protect her life.
During Terri's struggle for life, we were simply dumbfounded by the bizarre and shocking comments of Terri's bishop - Robert Lynch, as well as his abject failure to speak against her euthanasia (his formal statement during Terri's life can be found here). Father Robert J. Johansen remarked: " ..., if bishops had spoken out boldly- a gross injustice might have been averted. "
This is extremely problematic for the most obvious of reasons: namely, that the Church seems to be putting its blessing on the marriage of a man who killed his wife in order to marry his mistress (Jimmy Akin). One has to wonder why decisions were made in what appears to be a gross violation of Canon Law. Shouldn't Catholics be outraged?
Is there any reason why those who hold dearly the sanctity of human life should not hold Florida Bishops accountable for their actions?
