This is an action alert adapted from a Michigan Right to Life email.
With the confirmation hearings for Judge Samuel Alito, who was nominated to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, scheduled to begin January 9, the National Abortion Rights Action League issued a panicked analysis, Liberty at Risk: The Vulnerability of Reproductive Rights Under Alito.
The work of Right to Life of Michigan and more than 400,000 Michigan citizens was highlighted on page 10 of the 24-page document. It stated, Perhaps the most notable piece of anti-choice legislation enacted in 2004 was Michigans new ban on abortion . . .
The National Abortion Rights Action League featured the work of The Peoples Override which was organized by Right to Life of Michigan after Governor Jennifer Granholm vetoed the lifesaving Legal Birth Definition Act, legislation which would outlaw partial birth abortion in Michigan. To think that legislation which would ban the gruesome partial-birth abortion procedure was considered by NARAL as possibly the most anti-choice legislation enacted in 2004 shows how out of touch NARAL is with the mainstream public.
During his two campaigns for President, George W. Bush continually promised that if given the opportunity he would appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would strictly interpret the Constitution and not legislate from the bench. Judge Alito is well-known throughout the legal system as a fair and smart judge who has respect for the various branches of government. Judge Alito deserves a fair hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee and an up or down vote for confirmation.
Prolife people need to speak up for a fair process for Judge Alito. Our voices are needed to counter the pro-abortion groups which are working hard to defeat this nomination.
