I got a comment on the article "What are we praying for?" who challenged my right as a Christian to demand that laws be in place to protect human beings in the womb.
I will post his comments in block quotes.
We need to start this debate with a definition of morality.
A system of ideas of right and wrong conduct: religious morality; Christian morality.
On to the debate.
I am curious. Is the political struggle regarding the banning of abortion backed by anything else other than Christians believing abortion is a moral sin?
Other than the religious grounds, what other grounds are there against abortion? Saying it is "immoral" is only backed by religious belief, right?
The question there is, why do we have laws? Aren't laws based on morality? If they are, and your argument is that morality is based on religion, then we shouldn't have laws right?
How about murder? At the moment of conception a new human being is created who has unique DNA. It doesn't matter why you "choose" to kill the person, killing is murder and the last time I looked, murder was illegal.
If we are living in a democracy then there should be a clear distinction between church and state, in which case arguments for abortion backed by religious ground are invalidated.Unless you are after a theocracy of course, which is what it seems the devout Christian-Americans are looking for from an outsiders perspective!
Buzz - Ohh, I'm sorry, the correct answer to the question is "What is a Republic?".
America is not a democracy. A Republic is a better form of government than a democracy because we put the responsibility of dealing with moral and legal issues into the hands of those who represent us. We didn't vote racism down, our representatives put in place laws making racism illegal. Up until recent history most
America, as many countries around the world were/are was a racist country. We backed racism or at least did nothing to stop it. The "majority rule" of democracy would have prevented that right?
It's the same thing with abortion. If you take a poll on how many people would support a complete ban on abortion the majority would say no. Just because most people agree that human beings should be killed in the womb doesn't mean we should kill human beings in the womb.
Morality is an important part of society. People like you would love to get rid of it. It's so inconvenient isn't it? Why not open the doors to a society free of religion and religious morals? Think of all the fun you could have!
You throw out the word "theocracy" as if it were a curse word. Christians, Jews and Muslims already believe in a theocracy, and our central leader is God. We don't look to the government for moral direction. We do expect government to have certain moral standards in place to protect us though.
Why should a non-Christian have to live by Christian values?! If you are Christian and you don't want to have abortions, don't do it! Why force your belief set on other people?!It is the oldest story in the book! Do to others as you would like to be treated! How would Christians like to be forced to have abortions if the government felt they were not capable of supporting a baby? They would find this outrageously unfair, just as non-believers find it when Christians try to push their thoughts about abortion onto them!
America has been living by Judeo-Christian values since the foundation of this country. Our founding fathers were Christians and the laws we have are based on Christian values. If you don't like Christian values, why are you living in a country that was founded on Christian principles and laws?
"Forced to have abortions"? Why would we force someone to kill thier child? I love how you twisted around the argument that a woman should be allowed to have an abortion because she can't afford the child, to the government forcing her to have an abortion because she can't afford it.
Please do enlighten me to arguments against abortion that do not have religious grounds - I would love to have my eyes opened towards any as I have never heard one.
I will be glad to "enlighten" you. I doubt you want to have your "eyes opened" though.
As a matter of fact, I believe you keep your eyes closed to the horror of abortion so that you can have your cake and eat it too. I dare you to go to any search engine, like yahoo, and search for abortion pictures. View those pictures for 5 minutes. Come on, you said you wanted to be enlightened and you wanted your eyes opened didn't you?
You won't do it and don't pretend that you care about the human beings who are killed in the womb. I'm tired of cowardly challenges like yours.
What do you think laws are for? What is a law? Here is a definition by Dictionary.com:
A rule of conduct or procedure established by custom, agreement, or authority.
So why have laws in the first place? Aren't all laws based on moral thought and direction?
"Other than the religious grounds, what other grounds are there against abortion?"
> Adultery
> Polygamy
> Alcohol
> Drugs
> Sex - Prostitution - Pedophilia
> Gambling
> Stealing
> Lying
> Abortion - Oh yeah, it is already legal to kill people in the womb
> Rape
> Murder
> Violence
Many of those things are already legal somewhere in America anyway. You just want to knock down all moral laws.
I have a right as a Christian who is an American citizen to demand certain protections for me, my family, my friends and other American citizens. Laws are in place to help keep us from turning into Sodom and Gomorrah.
As an American citizen you have a right to be as immoral as you want, because after all, morality is a religious concept right? Don't expect me to support your immorality though.
