What does it mean to say "I am Pro-Life"?
I've mentioned in the past how some will say they are Pro-Life and yet claim that abortion is Pro-Life or believe that when a baby is born, allowing it to live is Pro-Life, so I think the term must be defined.
Not only does "Pro-Life" have to be defined, those of us who say the words must define what our responsibilities are if we accept the definition.
One definition found at dictionary.com is:
"Advocating full legal protection of human embryos or fetuses, especially by opposing legalized abortion."
I don't have a problem with this definition, though it doesn't reveal the main point of what it means to be Pro-Life. We aren't talking about human "embryos" or "fetuses", we are talking about human beings.
We are distracted from understanding that we are humans in the womb as well as outside of it because of the terms which describe the stages of development that are also used when describing our pre-born state. Many are too willing exploit those scientific words to make it appear as if we aren't human until we are born. Words like "blastocyst", "zygote", "embryo" and "fetus" are used to separate us from our human identity. Who would say "I'm pregnant with a Zygote"?
The most powerful argument we have in the Pro-Life debate is that abortion takes the life of a human being. There are a hundred ways the debate can go in different directions, but the only point is that a human being is being killed.
Why should this be a debate in the first place? It seems like common sense that being pregnant means carrying a child. Not only is this a debate, but it is one we Pro-Life supporters have lost for 32 years at the cost of almost 50 millions lives. It's hard to believe the great country of America would sit idly by as over a million people are killed every year, but that is exactly what we are doing. Sure, we vote "Pro-Life" candidates into office, and some of us stage protests, but when was the last time you saw a documentary about the genocide of man on the Discovery Channel? 9/11 killed 3,000 people and we still fear terrorist attacks and still see news on this event 4 years later. Four thousand people a day are killed by abortion and we let it pass as if it were just a scrolling news ticker that we pay attention to for just a second.
We have many battles to fight and if we don't win the Pro-Life battle the other ones will be much tougher.
> Embryonic Stem Cell Research
> Gender selection
> Genetic disease analysis for birth selection
> Insurance company intervention determining right of birth or insurance support based on genetic makeup of the parents
> Cloning
> Partial cloning for use of DNA extraction
> Selective reduction
The incredibly scary things that are happening in the labs and hospitals of America should frighten everyone into action!
I have been defending life in the womb for 28 years. I find it hard to believe that abortion is still legal, but it is, and every 30 seconds another human being dies at the hands of a "doctor".
Many say "yes, it is a human being, but I have a right to decide whether or not to carry that human being to term".
> I can't afford to have a child
> It might be disfigured or have mental problems
> I'm too young
> I'm too old
> Population control
> Prevent the suffering of the child by avoiding cruel foster parents
Those of us who say we are Pro-Life must define what our responsibilities are if we accept the definition that to be Pro-Life is to protect Life.
We assume that our representatives whom we vote into office will strive to end abortion. Their past record indicates that they won't unless we take our vote to the next step and challenge them to do the right thing. As I showed in a previous article, Senator John Warner from Virginia sent out a letter to me after our last Monthly Call for Life at http://www.marchtogether.com, which directly stated his current position on abortion. He proved to me that our representatives believe we live in a Democracy not a Republic, and that they watch the polls to see which way to go on issues instead of basing their decisions on morality.
MarchTogether.com was set up to directly challenge our representatives once a month to end abortion. We write, fax, email, call or march to let them know we want them to do everything they can.
What does it mean to be Pro-Life? It means to be active in doing everything possible to end abortion. Email and tell others about MarchTogether.com and prolifeblogs.com. Encourage other web sites to link to MarchTogether.com and prolifeblogs.com. Encourage your friends to participate in the Monthly Call for Life on the first Friday of every month. Seek out those who will join you instead of debating those who disagree with you.
4,000 of your fellow human beings will die today and another 4,000 will die every day until we stop abortion in America.
"Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works...Do you see that faith was working together with his work, and by works faith was made perfect?"James 2:17, 18, 22
Those who die won't know if you did the best you could to help end abortion, but you will, and someone else will.
Pass it on
