Wisconsin State Assembly Speaker John Gard, a vocal opponent of human cloning, recently received an unpleasant package from Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle's office a huge bag of used hypodermic needles on behalf of a Door County woman whose daughter suffers from juvenile diabetes.
Gard, who in June pushed the Comprehensive Human Cloning Ban (Assembly Bill 499) through the Assembly and who passionately defended the bill on the Assembly floor, was the victim of a cheap political stunt. Gard, his office staff, and the cleaning staff all apparently had to be punished for the Speakers outspoken defense of innocent human life.
Gov. Doyle says his staff should not have delivered the used hypodermic needles to Gard but added he did not believe the action warranted an apology.
