Pro-Life Response to Roberts Supreme Court Nomination - Updated

Jill Stanek has the talking points coming out of Washington. In a later post she writes, "Good sign: NARAL hates Roberts". Jill is on a roll: A "catastrophe" to PFAW is a blessing for America.

Common Wealth Conservative - "Seems like a good selection, though I must admit that I’m a bit surprised."

Daisy Cutter - Judge John Roberts is a fabulous choice. He was just confirmed two years ago to the D.C. Circuit ... and easily.

AfterAbortion - This is what will raise the hackles of all pro-abortion Democratic Senators:

"[w]e continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled… The Court’s conclusion in Roe that there is a fundamental right to an abortion… finds no support in the text, structure, or history of the Constitution.” ~ Brief for the Respondent at 13, Rust v. Sullivan, 500 U.S. 173 (1991) (Nos. 89-1391, 1392).
ArklahomaBoy - So a "battle" now looms in the Senate.

Boy Scout Blogger - I think he will make a good justice.

Hugh Hewitt - Judge John Roberts may be the smartest lawyer I have known, and he combines that intellect with a graciousness and good humor that will make it hard for any except the most extreme ideolouges to oppose him.

Right Wing Agenda - John Roberts appears to be a staunch pro-life conservative jurist, though he recently admitted that Roe v. Wade is the "law of the land." (A no brainer since it is the controlling abortion opinion, though Planned Parenthood of Pennsylvania v. Casey further defined legal abortion.)

Sierra Faith - W Scores!

Southern Catholic Convert - Roberts has a strong conservative background although he stated at one point nothing in his personal belief system would prevent him from upholding Roe vs. Wade as established law.

Mod-Blog - Now it is time to see if "civility" is possible. Color me doubtful, at best.

Black Kettle - ... a rock solid conservative whose nomination could trigger a tumultuous battle over the direction of the nation's highest court.

The Blue State Conservatives - Expect a filibuster and plenty of slime thrown at Roberts.

Nate's Humble Abode - He is a much stronger conservative and I’ve got to say that I am actually impressed with Bush on this pick.

Operation Rescue West - Operation Rescue Supports Bush’s Choice of John G. Roberts for US Supreme Court.

Agent Tim - We Like Him...We Really Do.

Aggressive Voice Daily - He's good looking, young (for Supreme Court standards) and has a solid grasp of the Constitution and knows the role of the jurist. Solid pick, Mr. Bush.

Catholics for Bush - Judge Roberts is Exceptionally Well Qualified.

DeoOmnisGloria - The big question is: where will he go on the issue of abortion? It actually looks good.

Life at the Frontier - the howling and shrieking from the usual suspects has begun.

Michelle Malkin - Has excellent coverage and a good round-up.

Stones Cry Out - I'm pleasantly surprised that President Bush decided to nominate Judge John Roberts to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. [analysis follows]

Shouting from the Mountaintop - Well, perhaps the jury is still out on John Roberts, but my bet is on the likelihood that he'll be a bit more like O'Connor than we can stomach.

NeophytePundit - I listened to Senator Schumer, he was not very happy. Pat Leahy was disturbed, and Dickey Durbin was beside himself.

MVRWC - Provides several excellent resources.

Mount Virtus - The President made the best of this selection, and good conservatives can join reasonable centrists and even people on the center-left of the political spectrum to applaud it. [A survey including a left-right contrast follows]

Hi. How ya doing? - I don't trust that Bush is even considering abortion in his judicial appointment, or at least considering it with an appropriate degree of seriousness.

Myopic Zeal has added a round-up that's worth a look.

Extreme Truths quotes John C. Yoo, a conservative professor of law at University of California at Berkeley. "What the social conservatives want is someone who will overturn Roe. v. Wade and change the court's direction on privacy. But [Roberts] represents the Washington establishment."

C-Pol - On the right, people who were afraid we'd get another O'Connor (wishy-washy) or Souter (liberal in conservative's clothing) appear to be pleasantly surprised.

Naaman the ex-leper - Well, we knew that Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and NOW (the unholy trinity?) were not going to like anyone that Bush might nominate. However, it doesn't look like there's a lot of ammunition in Judge Roberts' record for them to use against him.

JivinJehoshaphat - John G. Roberts Jr. = NARAL's nightmare

Thanks for the link guys! Great roundup.

The Blogging Boy Scout,
Travis

"Pat Leahy was disturbed, and Dickey Durbin was beside himself"

Comments don't seem to be enabled (for me and my firewall at least) over at Neophyte Pundit, but I simply HAD to give kudos for this most funny of lines! Thanks NP for the belly laugh! Dickey Durbin indeed!

I've got just one question (stepping out of my Christian character for just one second), re: "Pat Leahy was disturbed..."

How could you tell?

8^D

Sorry, couldn't resist!

NARAL whines about Roberts helping out peaceful groups like Operation Rescue but will be hypocritical when he goes after real violent, terrorist groups like the Maggot Punks.
