Other than abortion, parental consent is required for virtually every other medical procedure performed on a minor in Texas. For example, parents must consent before a minor can have her ears pierced. Parents must consent before a school nurse can administer an aspirin to a child.
A Senate bill that would require girls to get a parents written consent before getting an abortion has quickly moved through a State House committee Thursday.
Just one day after the Senate approved the measure, the House State Affairs committee voted 5-1 to report the bill favorably to the full chamber. The bill could be debated as early as Sunday.
According to the Texas Alliance for Life:
The pro-life Parental Consent Act, H.B. 1212 / S.B 1150, authored by Rep. Phil King (R-Weatherford) and Sen. Chris Harris (R-Arlington) requires physicians to obtain the consent of parents before performing abortions on their minor daughters (17 years of age or younger). This bill also protects minor girls from being coerced into abortion.Click here for background. This bill is a priority for nearly all pro-life, pro-family organizations in Texas. Yet H.B. 1212 / S.B. 1150 will not become law unless sufficient numbers of citizens contact their state representative and state senator and express support. Calls and letters are urgently needed.
