Barring some form of government intervention, the starvation of Terri Schiavo by her husband will begin today at 1 pm est for the express purpose of ending her life. I'm thankful for the thousands who continue to call their representatives in Congress and to hundreds of bloggers who have not given up hope and continue to support Terri through their websites. Indeed, great hope remains and now is the time for action.
I'm also thankful for the attention and support that Terri is getting from a number of highly influential blogs. I've highlighted a few of the many below.
Michelle Malkin points to Andrew McCarthy’s editorial in the National Review which successfully argues that Terrorists have been given more rights and civil liberties than Terri Schiavo.
Powerlineblog’s Big Trunk quotes an Opinion Journal editorial by Professor Gelernter, "The governor can grant a stay of execution when a condemned murderer's life is on the line. Mrs. Schiavo's stay required that the whole Florida legislature mobilize for action. The frightening question is: What happens to the next Mrs. Schiavo? And the next plus a hundred or a thousand?"
Hugh Hewitt, who was brought up Gelernter's article, suggests,
Many blogs have avoided the issues surrounding the Schiavo case, but I hope they will opine at some point on the situation. The Gelernter article captures the urgency of the moment., and may provoke a few more bloggers on the sidelines to offer an opinion on the significance of the case.Joe Carter at the evangelical Outpost has a thought provoking article that considers civil disobedience in response to injustice. He concludes,
We must also ask ourselves how long will we allow the Baby Does and Terri Shiavos to be starved before we finally refuse to tolerate a culture of death. Protection of the weak and innocent is the nutrition that feeds our starving society; respect for dignity the water that hydrates a parched people. How many feeding tubes can we cut off before we end up starving our own souls?
Captain Ed weighs in on the subpoena of Terri Schiavo.
If Drudge is correct and Terri herself will be subpoenaed, then it amounts to an open-ended stay for the removal of her feeding tube. If Terri is under subpoena, then the law states that nothing can be done to her which will prevent her testimony. That means the tube stays in until Congress calls her to testify.La Shawn Barber notes,
This is the day Michael Schiavo has been waiting for. The devoted husband with the live-in girlfriend will order doctors to remove his wife’s feeding tube so she can slowly starve to death. And, Scott Ott, the master of satire, writes and article titled, "Schiavo Hailed as Anti-Obesity Champion."
WorldMagBlog brings us back to the legislative options in Legislative efforts to save Shiavo fail, but
Speaking of the legislature, BlogsforTerri provides two main action items for Terri's supporters:
- Call on the US Congress to pass the Incapacitated Person's Protection Act. Because congress is preparing for recess, this must be done immediately (before 10:30 am est).
- Call on Florida State Senators to change their vote on legislation aimed at protecting Terri and those like her from forced starvation.
Finally, join with many across the globe who have marked today for Fasting and Prayer.
